Participants with BPD performed worse on all measures of cognitive functioning: attention, verbal memory, processing speed and a measure of general neuropsychological functioning. The study found that depression was significantly more prevalent in the BPD sample compared with the control sample and that there was a significant inverse correlation between level of depression and scores on a general index of neuropsychological functioning. Results from ANCOVA analyses revealed significant differences existed in neuropsychological performance on all four measures of cognitive functioning between the two groups after controlling for depression. The role of effort in testing with persons with BPD was explored, with results indicating that participants with BPD provided good effort. Lastly, the study’s findings showed that those participants with a BPD diagnosis and a neurological disease performed worse on the measure of general neuropsychological functioning compared with individuals with BPD who had no history of a diagnosed neurological disease. Results from ANCOVA analyses revealed that significant differences in neuropsychological performance on all measures of cognitive functioning existed between the two groups after controlling for presence of a diagnosed neurological disorder. Implications of the study findings have been presented and discussed. Also, possible confounds to the study’s findings were identified and discussed in the hope that future replications of the current study will control for such variables and result in robust research findings. Suggestions for future research in this area have been provided to assist in the construction of a more complete neuropsychological profile of BPD. ii Acknowledgements Several important individuals deserve recognition.     Borderline Personality Disorder What is Borderline Personality Disorder? Borderline personality disorder is an illness marked by an ongoing pattern of varying moods, self-image, and behavior. These symptoms often result in impulsive actions and problems in relationships with other people. A person with borderline personality disorder may experience episodes of anger, depression, and anxiety that may last from a few hours to days. The role of consciousness in processing emotional faces Michela Balconi Department of Psychology, Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Milano, Italy [email protected] Abstract Neuropsychological studies have underlined the significant presence of distinct brain correlates deputed to analyze facial expression of emotion. It was observed that some cerebral circuits were considered as specific for emotional face comprehension as a func- tion of conscious vs. unconscious processing of emotional information. Moreover, the emotional content of faces (i.e. positive vs. negative; more or less arousing) may have an effect in activating specific cortical networks. Between the others, recent studies have explained the contribution of hemispheres in comprehending face, as a function of type of emotions (mainly related to the distinction positive vs. negative) and of specific tasks (comprehending vs. producing facial expressions). Specifically, ERPs (event-related potentials) analysis overview is proposed in order to comprehend how face may be processed by an observer and how he can make face a meaningful construct even in absence of awareness. Finally, brain oscillations is considered in order to explain the synchronization of neural populations in response to emotional faces when a conscious vs. unconscious processing is activated. Neuroticism and Personality Disorders The lonely are frequently perceived by others and often even by themselves as being mentally sub-par and specifically neurotic in the sense of their manifest- ing ongoing emotional insecurity, fragility, and instability. When extreme, these traits require therapeutic intervention. Unfortunately, neurotics are often not the best at helping themselves find a remedy for the anxiety and other traits that ail them. Moreover, discovering and realizing such an antidote to their afflic- tion are by no means the same thing. The research of Daniel Peplau and Letitia Perlman has found that, first, the lonely “score higher” than the nonlonely in terms of neuroticism; second, that “loneliness is associated with poor mental health” in general; and, third, “structured psychiatric examinations” reveal the lonely as having more “men- tal symptoms needing treatment” than the nonlonely (1984, p. 20). Thomas A. Widiger and Timothy Trull state that those who rank above average in FFM Neuroticism: lack the emotional strength to simply ignore the hassles of everyday life and the emotional resilience to overcome the more severe traumas which are inevitable at some point within most persons’ lives. Which particular mental disorder they develop may be due in part to other contributing va- riables (for example, gender, social-cultural context, childhood experiences, genetic vulnerabilities, and additional personality traits) which either direct the person toward a preferred method of coping (for example, bulimic, dis- sociative, or substance use behavior) or reflect an additional vulnerability (for example, a sexual dysfunction).
