Reference Level Title & Description Date CO series Choir CO/CH sub-series Choristers CO/CH/1 sub-sub-series Accounts 1447-1854 CO/CH/1/1 sub-sub-sub- Accounts of the Collectors of the Rents 1447-1549 series Accounts of the Collectors of the Rents. The following information is taken from the paper catalogue: 'Rents were received from tenements and property in the city of Salisbury, in Preshute and Woodford. Payments were made to the Bishop, the Warden of the Choristers, for the maintenance of the Choristers' house and other property, and on behalf of the Choristers themselves'. CO/CH/1/1/1 item Chorister's Collector 1447-1452 1447-1451 Five membranes in a roll consisting of the accounts paid to the Chorister's Collector at New Sarum on the feast of St Michael - from 28-29 year of Henry VI (1449-1450); 29-30 Henry VI (1450-1451); 26-27 Henry VI (1447-1448); [27-28] Henry VI (1448-1449); and 26-27 Henry VI (1447-1448). The roll is marked 'Chorister's Collector 1448-1452.' 1 CO/CH/1/1/2 item Chorister's Collector 1460-1461 1460-1462 Accounts of the Chorister's Collector at the Cathedral Church of Sarum from Easter 1460 to Easter 1461, at the time when William Crowton was Custos Choristarum. This is probably William Crowton prebendary of Yetminster Prima and Rector of All Cannings. The dates in the heading have been altered from 1461-1462 to 1460-1461. The margin states that these are for Sarum with Woodford and Preshute. CO/CH/1/1/3 item Chorister's Collector 1463-1464 1463-1464 Accounts of the Chorister's Collector at the Cathedral Church of Sarum from 1463 to 1464, at the time when William Osgodby was Custos Choristarum. The margin states that these are for Sarum with Woodford and Preshute. This includes a very long section titled reparations. CO/CH/1/1/4 item Chorister's Collector 1465-1466 1465-1466 The heading is faded but probably states that these are the accounts of the Chorister's Collector at the Cathedral Church of Sarum from 1465 to 1466, in the fourth year that William Osgodby was Custos Choristarum. The reverse (faded) appears to state that these are the fourth accounts of William Osgodby. CO/CH/1/1/5 item Chorister's Collector 1467-1468 1467-1468 Accounts of the Chorister's Collector from Easter 7 Edward IV to Easter 8 Edward IV (1467-1468), in the sixth year that William Osgodby was Custos Choristarum. The margin states that these are for Sarum with Woodford. CO/CH/1/1/6 item Chorister's Collector 1495-1496 1495-1496 Most of the heading is missing. [Accounts of the Chorister's Collector] from the feast of St Michael 11 [Henry VII 1495] to the feast of St Michael 12 [Henry VII] 1496. 2 CO/CH/1/1/7 item Chorister's Collector 1500-1501 1500-1501 Accounts of Mr [Edmund] Crome, canon residentiary and Custos Choristarum by Richard Whit[by] sub master of the Choir from the feast of St Michael 16 Henry VII to the feast of St Michael 17 Henry VII. The margin states that these are for Sarum, Woodford and Preshute. There is a small separate sheet enclosed within the roll, giving accounts for building repairs. 'Frome Can[on] Res[identiary] 1504.' is written on it (a later hand has crossed out the F and put 'Crome', and also changed 1504 to 1500. CO/CH/1/1/8 item Chorister's Collector [1503-1504] 1503-1504 Half of the first section is missing. These are accounts of Mr Ed[mund] Crome (reverse of roll states that he is Custos Choristarum) by Richard Whit[by], 19-20 Henry [VII]. The margin states that these are for [?Sarum], Woodford and Preshute. Three separate sheets have been added to the end of the roll, one being a note of balances remaining to the choristers at various dates, and two are accounts of payments for building and repair work. CO/CH/1/1/9 item Chorister's Collector 1509-1510 1509-1510 Accounts of Mr Edmund Crome, Canon Residentiary and Custos Choristarum by Richard Whitte[by] [Whitby], from the feast of St Michael 1 Henry VIII to the feast of St Michael 2 Henry VIII. The margin states that these are for [?Sarum], Woodford and Preshute. CO/CH/1/1/10 item Chorister's Collector 1517-1518 1517-1518 Accounts of John Frier Collector of Rents from the feast of St Michael 9 Henry VIII to the feast of St Michael 10 Henry VIII. The margin states that these are for Sarum. There are two additional sheets with accounts of building repairs and other payments. CO/CH/1/1/11 item Chorister's Collector 1518-1519 1518-1519 Accounts of John Fryer [Frier] Collector of Rents from the feast of St Michael 10 Henry VIII to the feast of St Michael 11 Henry VIII. The text is badly faded. There are two additional sheets with accounts for building work on the chorister's house and for payments for obits and feast days. 3 CO/CH/1/1/12 item Chorister's Collector 1519-1520 1519-1520 Accounts of John Fryer [Frier] Subcustos Choristarum or Collector of Rents from the feast of St Michael 11 Henry VIII to the feast of St Michael 12 Henry VIII. There are two separate sheets for building work, and for obits and feast days. CO/CH/1/1/13 item Chorister's Collector [1520-1521] 1518-1521 The heading is missing, but William Wilton Custos Choristarum and John Fryer [Frier] are both mentioned. '1518?' and '?1518-20' are written in a modern hand on the back of the roll, but (according to the paper catalogue) the 'deficit on this account is the same as that which is carried over to 1521-2, so presumably this is 1520-21.' There is an additional sheet with accounts for obits and feast days, and the remains of another sheet (this seems to have been torn off). CO/CH/1/1/14 item Chorister's Collector 1521-1522 1521-1522 Accounts of John Fryer [Frier] Subcustos Choristarum or Collector of Rents from the feast of [St Michael] 13 Henry VIII to the feast of [St Michael] 14 Henry VIII. There are two additional sheets for repairs to the guildhall, and for obits and feast days. CO/CH/1/1/15 item Chorister's Collector 1524-1525 1524-1525 Accounts of John Fryer [Frier] Collector of Rents from the feast of St Michael 16 Henry VIII to the feast of St Michael 17 Henry VIII. William Wilton Custos Choristarum is mentioned. There is an additional sheet with accounts for obits and feast days. CO/CH/1/1/16 item Chorister's Collector 1525-1526 1525-1526 Much of the heading is missing. Accounts of John Fryer [Frier] Collector of Rents [17 Henry VIII] to 18 [Henry VIII]. Too fragile to unroll - according to the paper catalogue, there are 'two separate sheets - building repairs to choristers' houses and other tenements, and payments for obits and feast days.' CO/CH/1/1/17 item Chorister's Collector 1529-1530 1529-1530 Accounts of Laurence Man Collector of Rents from the feast of St Michael 21 Henry VIII to the feast of St Michael 22 Henry VIII. There is a separate section for reparations done, starting with Preshute. 4 CO/CH/1/1/18 item Chorister's Collector [1540s] nd [c1540s] There appears to be no heading and seemingly no date, although someone has written in a modern hand 'Choristers Collector Between 1542-49'. There is mention of the Custos Choristarum [?Wutton/Wilton]. There is a small damaged fragment which may be the heading, that probably says 'accounts of Laurence Man'. The reverse of the roll is marked 'Accounts (dilapidated)'. CO/CH/1/2 sub-sub-sub- Receipts and Bills 1668-1834 series Receipts, bills and other items relating to the choristers accounts. CO/CH/1/2/1 item Repairs to School House 1669-1678 A bundle of receipts and bills for repairs and building work. Several of them mention the school house, and the paper catalogue states that they relate to 'repairs to school house' - it can only be assumed that they all relate to this. CO/CH/1/2/2 item Receipts and Bills 1668-1669 1668-1669 Bundle of receipts and bills for cloth, payments for choristers, surplices, tenths, and augmentation for the vicarage of Preshute. CO/CH/1/2/3 item Receipts and Bills 1672-1677 1672-1677 Bundle of receipts, mostly consisting of receipts for payments to choristers, and also other items such as receipts for teaching choristers. Within the bundle are several separate bundles, including a bundle titled 'Choiruster's School 1672 to 1676'; a bundle of items dated 1674; a bundle of items dated 1677; a bundle of items dated 1673; and a bundle of items dated 1674-1677 (in that order). It is unclear whether the separation into bundles was imposed at a later date, but the order has been left as found (with brown string replaced by archival tape). A receipt for allowances to a senior Chorister (son of Thomas Holins) dated 1675 has been added to this file.
