Medler INTRODUCTION HIS bulletin attempts to present as accurate and complete a T guide to the leafhoppers of Minnesota as possible within the limits of the material available for study. It is realized that cer- tain groups could not be treated completely because of the lack of available material. Nevertheless, it is hoped that in its present form this treatise will serve as a convenient and useful manual for the systematic and economic worker concerned with the forms of the upper Mississippi Valley. In all cases a reference to the original description of the species and genus is given. Keys are included for the separation of species, genera, and supergeneric groups. In addition to the keys a brief diagnostic description of the important characters of each species is given. Extended descriptions or long lists of references have been omitted since citations to this literature are available from other sources if ac- tually needed (Van Duzee, 1917). -

The ground plan and comparative morphology of the nymphal head of Membracoidea are presented with particular emphasis on the position of the clypeus, frons, epistomal suture, and ecdysial line. Differences in interpretation of the head structures in Auchenorrhyncha are discussed. Membracoidea head may vary more extensively than heads in any other group of insects. It is often modified by the development of an anterior carina, which apparently was gained and lost multiple times within Membracoidea. The main modifications of the head of Membracoidea and comparison of those changes with the head of other superfamilies of Auchenorrhyncha are described. The fauna of Typhlocybini (sensu stricto, excluding Empoascini) endemic to South America is reviewed and comprises seven closely related genera, five described herein as new, and 55 species, 52 here described as new. The genera and species are described and keys and illustrations are provided to aid in their identification. Columbonirvana Linnavuori comprises 17 species, 16 new. Eualebra Baker comprises 19 species, 17 new. Euzyginella gen. nov., comprises four new species. Neozyginella gen. nov., comprises six new species. Pseudhadina gen. nov., comprises one new spe- cies. Pseudozyginella gen. nov., comprises three new species. Tahurella gen. nov., comprises five new species. One new synonym is recognized: Eualebra smithii Baker, 1899 equals Dikraneura (Hyloidea) reticulata Osborn, 1928, syn. nov. One previously described species placed in Eualebra belongs in tribe Dikraneurini; thus, a new combination is proposed: Alconeura (Hyloidea) rubra (Van Duzee), comb. nov. Key words: Auchenorrhyncha, Typhlocybini, morphology, taxonomy, distribution Introduction The leafhopper genus Eupteryx was established by Curtis (1829) with Cicada atropunctaca Goeze as its type species and includes two subgenera Eupteryx and Stacla Dworakowska, 1969, with 120 species to date (Mühlethaler & Gnezdilov 2013, Guglielmino 2014, Dmitriev & Dietrich 2003). Some species of the nominate subgenus Eupteryx from India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan were described by Distant (1918), Melicher (1903), Young (1952) and Ahmed (1967, 1969). Dworakowska (1978) confirmed eighty- one known species in the subgenus Eupteryx distributed in the Palaearctic, Nearctic, Oriental and Ethiopian Regions, and reviewed forty species of subgenus Eupteryx in Asia (Dworakowska, 1982). -

www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Mitogenome and phylogenetic analysis of typhlocybine leafoppers (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) Jia Jiang1,2, Xiaoxiao Chen1,2, Can Li2 & Yuehua Song1* Mitogenomes have been widely used to estimate phylogenetic relationships among insects and provide data useful for augmenting traditional morphological characters in delimiting species. Here, complete mitogenome sequences of two closely related typhlocybine leafoppers, Cassianeura cassiae (Ahmed, 1970) and C. bimaculata Dworakowska, 1984, were obtained and found to be 15,423 bp and 14,597 bp in length, respectively. The gene order was found to be similar to other published leafopper mitogenomes, but the control region of C. bimaculata is the shortest among known leafoppers and lacks tandem repeats. Phylogenetic analysis of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), the frst and second codons of 13 PCGs, 13 PCGs and two rRNAs formed three well-supported tree topologies. The topologies of phylogenetic trees inferred from three datasets were almost identical, which was consistent with previous molecular phylogenies of this group. Comparative morphological study of the ovipositors revealed several characters potentially useful for diagnosing genera and resolving their phylogenetic relationships. Phylogenetic analysis of these and other morphological characters yielded a tree that is mostly consistent with the tree obtained from analysis of mitogenome sequences. In both molecular and morphological phylogenenies, Typhlocybini and Zyginellini clustered into one clade, but neither was recovered as monophyletic. Typhlocybinae (Hemiptera, Auchenorrhyncha, Cicadellidae) is the second-largest leafopper subfamily afer Deltocephalinae, and comprises 510 genera, and 4929 species, widely distributed in the six major zoogeographic regions of the world 1. Unlike most other Cicadellidae, members of this subfamily feed directly from plant cells and a strong host specifcity2,3. -

Oak St., Champaign, IL 61820 2 Corresponding author, E-mail:[email protected] ABSTRACT Comprising~20,000 described species, leafhoppers (Cicadellidae) are the largest family of sap-sucking herbivores and comprise the largest number of known vectors of plant pathogens of any insect family. Although recent studies of tropical faunas indicate that the vast majority of extant species remain to be discovered, availability of new cybertaxonomic tools is enabling newly trained taxonomists to increase the rate of species discovery. Phylogenetic relationships among leafhoppers remain largely unexplored, but recent published phylogenies based on morphological and molecular data have begun to elucidate the phylogenetic status and relationships of previously recognized tribes and subfamilies. As a result of such studies, several changes to the higher classification have been proposed, including changes to the concepts of subfamilies Cicadellinae, Delocephalinae and Megophthalminae, the groups comprising the majority of known vector species. Taking newly available phylogenetic information into account may help focus the ongoing search for competent vectors on the groups most closely related to known vector species. New molecular phylogenetic and functional genomic tools and techniques may facilitate more rapid and extensive surveys of the microbiota associated with non-pest leafhoppers and promote more comprehensive approaches to the study of the evolution of leafhopper-pathogen-plant associations.
