Historical Note:

Antioch College was established in 1850 by the Christian Connection. The college opened in 1852 with as the acting president. Since its inception, Antioch garnered a progressive reputation for being one of the first co-educational colleges in the . Antioch College stressed a well-rounded liberal arts education and emphasized eclecticism in its curriculum by encouraging students to study various subjects and engage in recreational activities. In 1919, Antioch College briefly closed to redesign its curriculum and reopened in 1921 with a cooperative education program. Antioch’s coop program varied from traditional college curriculums through its emphasis on joining the workforce while attending college.

Throughout its history, Antioch College faced financial problems and shut down a series of times due to these difficulties. The college reopened in 2011.

The Antioch College Publications collection explores the curriculum, philosophy, and history of Antioch College through: documents which describe the college’s coursework; promotional pamphlets; and publications which elaborate on the lives and activities of Antioch students.
