4 Thomas served in the United States Army and suffers from Muscular Dystrophy, a condition that weakened his muscles and eventually led to reliance on a wheelchair for mobility. At 45 years old, having retired from service and unable to work, he found himself in a desperate situation.

Lacking the resources necessary to survive, he fell behind on his rent, utility and child support payments. The wheelchair he so heavily relied on for self-sufficiency needed costly repairs. With his debt mounting and his means of mobility threatened, Thomas faced a new hurdle, eviction. Hopeless and disheartened, Thomas sought help through the VA and was referred to St. Sebastian Veteran Services (SSVS).

He met with his SSVS Case Manager, who immediately began to attend to his needs and personal safety. She arranged for Thomas to receive the benefits he had earned, located a new wheelchair and began looking for safe housing. After securing a handicapped accessible apartment in an assisted living community that would allow him to keep his service animals, she also ensured that Thomas had food, clothing and medical care.

Today Thomas is settled in to his new home and loves his new community. He is happy, secure and very thankful to the SSVS staff for their help and support.

St. Sebastian Veteran Services (SSVS) is funded by a grant from the Veterans Administration and private donations. The program supports low income veterans and their family who are homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness within Shelby County, TN.

5 Marie was born in the war torn county of Liberia. For many years she dreamed of moving to the United States to escape the hardships she was forced to endure. Eventually, Marie was able to flee Liberia and relocate to the United States as a legal immigrant. Permanently settling in Memphis, she lived on her own, worked hard to make ends meet and was even able to send money to help support her son in Sierra Leone.

Memphis had become Marie’s home and she wanted to become a United States citizen. However, she was scared; scared to tell her story, scared that her English language skills were not sufficient, scared of the complicated application process which included an interview, a test and a writing component. Lacking confidence, she almost gave up on her dream until a friend recommended she speak with CCWTN’s Immigration Services.

A Case Manager with Immigration Services listened to Marie’s story and to her worries. As Marie worked with her Case Manager, she began to regain her confidence and once again set her sights on becoming a citizen. She knew that she would not have to tackle the complex application process on her own. Her Case Manager would help guide her every step of the way.

The day of Marie’s naturalization interview was one of excitement and nervousness but Marie was prepared. She passed the naturalization test and after a lifetime of hard work, she was finally going to be able to achieve her dream.

Marie is now a proud citizen of the United States. She is enrolled in school and continues to work on her English language proficiency, as well as learning new skills to better her employment prospects. With her foundation in place, Marie and her Case Manager have begun working on her next goal – reuniting with her son.

6 As a young man, John lived life to the fullest. He served in Iraq for three years and toured the world. He became the proud father of two children. After retiring from service, John found steady employment and purchased a home.

In 2012, everything changed.

John had been laid off and was unable to find another job. No longer able to make his mortgage payments, his house went into foreclosure. Homeless and unemployed, John’s physical and mental health began to suffer. “My diabetes started to get the best of me and so did my mental illness.” John hit rock bottom.

In 2013, John sought assistance from the VA and was placed at Genesis House. Genesis House is a residential treatment facility serving homeless men and women struggling with mental health issues. John’s Case Manager developed a personalized plan tailored to address his medical and psychological needs. Through a network of therapeutic and supportive services, John was provided with the tools necessary to find gainful employment, permanent housing and the ability to make healthier long term choices.

“I realized that I have been truly blessed and given the chance by my highest power to continue to do things with my life. Genesis House allowed me the time and gave me the structure that I needed to re-evaluate my life. It also gave me a positive outlook from where I was and allowed me to get the inspiration from others that were already in the program.”

* Data collected between 7/1/13 - 6/30/14 7 Mrs. Davenport, the Director of Camp Love & Learn, watched the 4th grade campers playing on the playground. While they were playing, she asked them what they wanted to be when they grew up. Almost every boy on the playground shouted, “Basketball player!”

One boy, Bobby, stood up and told the group that he did not want to be a basketball player.

Mrs. Davenport and Bobby’s fellow campers couldn’t believe it. Many of the boys had dreams of playing professional basketball. Bobby in particular loved the sport and played every day at camp. Not only did he love it, he was good and was known for his skills on the court. Earlier in the summer, he had even proudly proclaimed that he was going to be a professional basketball player when he grew up.

The campers pressed on. “But Bobby, you love basketball! If you aren’t going to be a basketball player, what will you be?”

Bobby looked at Mrs. Davenport and his friends and smiled. “I want to be the person who is in charge of a summer camp program - just like this one! Everyone has so much fun at Camp Love & Learn and I want to plan fun things for kids to do in the summer.”

Camp Love & Learn served 193 children over eight weeks at the Church of the Resurrection and St. Paul Catholic School in 2014. The camp focuses on learning, nutrition and fun. Experienced teachers provide 10 hours of grade appropriate instruction in math and reading each week. A healthy breakfast, lunch and snack are served daily. Campers also enjoy weekly field trips to local attractions and swimming at a community pool. 51% 49% BOYS GIRLS

This year, Parish Social Ministry expanded its horizons. This included hosting a Catholic Charities USA event with national and regional speakers for an audience of almost 200 persons from nine dioceses. Another way they expanded horizons was a project where 2,000 donated flyswatters became a teaching tool about hunger in our area.
