At 45 years old, having retired from service and unable to work, he found himself in a desperate situation. Lacking the resources necessary to survive, he fell behind on his rent, utility and child support payments. The wheelchair he so heavily relied on for self-sufficiency needed costly repairs. With his debt mounting and his means of mobility threatened, Thomas faced a new hurdle, eviction. Hopeless and disheartened, Thomas sought help through the VA and was referred to St. Sebastian Veteran Services (SSVS). He met with his SSVS Case Manager, who immediately began to attend to his needs and personal safety. She arranged for Thomas to receive the benefits he had earned, located a new wheelchair and began looking for safe housing. After securing a handicapped accessible apartment in an assisted living community that would allow him to keep his service animals, she also ensured that Thomas had food, clothing and medical care. Today Thomas is settled in to his new home and loves his new community. He is happy, secure and very thankful to the SSVS staff for their help and support. St. Sebastian Veteran Services (SSVS) is funded by a grant from the Veterans Administration and private donations. The program supports low income veterans and their family who are homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness within Shelby County, TN. 230 172 54 161 69 Total veterans and Adults Children Male Female their families served Prevention Total persons diverted from 89 homelessness Rapid Rehousing Total persons transitioned from homlessness to 83 permanent housing * Data collected between 7/1/13 - 6/30/14 5 Marie was born in the war torn county of Liberia. For many years she dreamed of moving to the United States to escape the hardships she was forced to endure. Eventually, Marie was able to flee Liberia and relocate to the United States as a legal immigrant. Permanently settling in Memphis, she lived on her own, worked hard to make ends meet and was even able to send money to help support her son in Sierra Leone. Memphis had become Marie’s home and she wanted to become a United States citizen. However, she was scared; scared to tell her story, scared that her English language skills were not sufficient, scared of the complicated application process which included an interview, a test and a writing component.

  • Wouldn't It Be Nice
wouldn’t it be nice by lewis shiner hat if? It’s not just science fiction and fantasy that asks this w question, it’s all of fiction. What if a young student murdered his landlady to prove his moral superiority? What if a woman survived the Civil War and three marriages only to find true love too late? It’s also the question by which we transform ourselves. What if I quit my job and moved to the desert? What if I turned myself loose to create “a teenage symphony to God?” The Icarus who attempted that teenage symphony in 1966 is now 53. For Brian Wilson it’s been thirty years of struggle: with drugs and diet, with people who want to run his life for him, with the intensity of his own feelings. The good news is that Wilson’s life is finally his own again. He is newly married to a woman named Melinda, who is calm and sweet and loving with him. He has a new house in the safety of a gated community high above the city. And he is back in the public eye with two new albums and a movie on the Disney channel. The film is I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times, directed by producer-of-the- moment Don Was. The soundtrack is a kind of Best of Brian Wilson, live in the studio with crack session players like Jim Keltner, Benmont Tench, and Waddy Wachtel. This is not only a wonderful album in its own right, it represents a healing of other wounds.

Painter Iliatova to give lecture on power of observation, Page 5 The Chautauquan Daily www.chqdaily.com Seventy-Five Cents Chautauqua, New York The Official Newspaper of Chautauqua Institution | Friday, July 18, 2014 Volume CXXXVIII, Issue 24 Youssef questions whether American Hold on democracy is best choice for Egypt CORTNEY LINNECKE Staff Writer Nancy Youssef thinks that democracy may too often be glorified as a golden, infalli- ble form of government, and that Americans may be too eager to throw it as a pana- cea toward any problem that arises. Youssef, an Egyptian- American, is the Middle East bureau chief for McClatchy Newspapers and spent the last several years navigating the world of instability, turmoil and revolution in Egypt. It is this world that she plans to speak on at today’s morning lecture at 10:45 a.m. in the Amphitheater. “My own takeaway from my time in Egypt and Libya is that the idea ‘democracy always leads to more stability’ might be from a bygone era,” Youssef said. “It seems we’re at a point now where there needs to be a discussion about how [the U.S.] balances its morals and interests.” The years Youssef spent in Egypt and Libya gave her an understanding of Middle Eastern conflict and a compre- for Wilson Phillips hension of how the insecure region relates to democracy. In the late 20th century and early years of the 21st, Egypt and the United States were in a honeymoon stage of sorts.
