Alliance Created State Giant Traveling Lesson “MAPPING MASSACHUSETTS” Title:​ Recommended Grades: Grade 3 Needed: 60 minutes

Objectives: Students will locate a point on the map based on clues given to them. (see clue cards) Students will identify the coordinates of their point on the grid. Students will write down a landmark for each . Students will record location to refer to other towns in proximity to them.

Materials: Giant state Massachusetts map Pre-made Clue Cards (see laminated prepared cards) Recording Sheet

Preparation: Find a space big enough to lay out map Laminated clue cards Run off recording sheet (one per student) Can not be used ON the map. Fill out along sides of map.

Rules: • Shoes are not allowed on the map. Please have students remove shoes before walking on the map. • No writing utensils on the map.

Directions: • Explain to students, that today they will be following “leads” in finding out why Massachusetts is so special. • Pass one clue card per student • Independently, students will read their clue and find the point on the map that represents it. • They will place their card on the point and find the coordinates on the grid to their destination. • Next students will be responsible for writing down a landmark (geographical feature) for each cardinal direction. • Finally, students will record the towns that are nearest and farthest to their

Modifications: Use a buddy up system if independent work is too difficult. Use textbook, Massachusetts Our Home as a reference for locations. ​ ​ Use small Massachusetts atlases included in kit as a resource.

Return to the map with dates and place date card on point. Evaluate the patterns of dates and locations. Complete activity by creating a timeline.
