The United States and Israel have repeatedly clashed over Israeli plans to extend its separation wall east of Ariel, effectively annexing the settlement and separating the central and northern parts of the West Bank. Peace groups have been particularly shocked that authorisation for Ariel college’s upgrade came from Mr Barak, leader of the Labor Party. Members of his centre-left faction had previously blocked attempts by right-wing parties to change the college’s status. Several Israeli academics also warned that it would add fuel to existing campaigns in Europe to boycott Israeli universities, which have been accused of complicity with the occupation.

Should they fail, T the specter of a possible Israeli strike looms large, seeming to grow more likely as Tehran's nuclear program advances. In recent weeks, however, the conventional wisdom has shifted to favor the view that Israel is not on the cusp of a strike against Iran. This has been driven in part by public comments from former Israeli security officials -- notably former Mossad head Meir Dagan and former Shin Bet head Yuval Diskin -- questioning the wisdom of such an attack. An Israeli strike is not feasible, the thinking goes, so long as its security community remains divided -- and the thinly veiled threats of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak are therefore mere bluster. Don't be so sure. Dagan and Diskin's views aren't likely to tell us much about the likelihood of a strike on Iran one way or the other. For starters, they're former officials -- given the sensitivity of this issue, and the recent media misinterpretation of Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Benny Gantz's remarks earlier this month, no other current members of the security establishment are likely to go public with their views.

Reference to the “1967 border with agreed swaps” in a UNSC resolution; 2. Requesting US determination of a percentage for land swaps, and; 3. Hillary Clinton’s “parameters”. 1. Reference to the 1967 border with agreed swaps in a UNSC resolution At least two potential benefits may exist in seeking a United Nations Security Council Resolution that re‐ affirms the Palestinian people’s right to a state of their own in all of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, including East Jerusalem. First, such a resolution can reinforce the illegality and illegitimacy of Israeli claims over all of the oPt as delimited by the 4 June 1967 line. Second, such a resolution can reaffirm the continued applicability of international humanitarian law, namely, the Fourth Geneva Convention and the Hague Regulations, to all of the territory occupied by Israel in 1967. One risk in pursuing such a resolution, however, is that it may either directly or indirectly dilute UNSCR 242 and universally recognized Israeli obligations under IHL, specifically the requirement that Israel withdraw fully to the June 4 1967 line. This risk would arise, for example, if the resolution refers to potential land swaps, even if the resolution specifies that such swaps must be ‘mutually agreed.’ The mere introduction of the option of swapping territory in a UNSC resolution can, and likely will, be used by Israel and others to argue that the international community no longer views the 4 June 1967 line as sacrosanct.

    Neoliberal Settlement as Violent State Project: West Bank Settlement Homes and Real Estate Occupation Yael Allweil Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning, Technion and Israel Institute for Advanced Studies [email protected] Abstract Intense ideological debates over the legal status of West Bank settlements and political campaigns objecting to or demanding their removal largely neglect the underlying capitalist processes that construct these settlements. Building upon the rich scholarship on the interrelations of militarism and capitalism, this study explores the relationship between capitalist and militarist occupation through housing development. Pointing to neoliberalism as central to the ways in which militarism and capitalism have played out in Israeli settlement dynamics since 1967, this paper unpacks the mutual dependency of the Israeli settlement project on real estate capitalism and neoliberal governance. Through historical study of the planning, financing, construction, and architecture of settlement dwellings as real estate, as well as interviews and analysis of settler-produced historiographies, this paper identifies the Occupied Territories (OT) as Israel’s testing ground for neoliberal governance and political economy. It presents a complementary historiography for the settlement project, identifying three distinct periods of settlement as the product of housing real estate: neoliberal experimentation (1967-1994), housing militarization (1994-2005), and “real-estate-ization” (2005-present).
