“The History of the Eastern Counties Football League” “THE HISTORY OF THE EASTERN COUNTIES FOOTBALL LEAGUE” Above: Eastern Counties League games have been watched from a wide variety of vantage points. Two postwar ECL games were played in front of the magnificent stands at Arsenal’s Highbury Stadium and Gorleston played Leyton Orient there in an F.A. Cup tie. However the stand at Somersham in their early ECL days was a rather less impressive structure. (For those unfamiliar with the two grounds, Highbury is on the left). The Management Committee of the Eastern Counties Football League is pleased to commemorate the 75 th anniversary of the founding of the League by publishing “The History of the Eastern Counties Football League” in November 2010. This exclusive work consists of more than 740 pages and includes almost 600 photographs, some of which have never previously been published. The book gives a detailed account of the first 75 years of the league’s history and includes: v Chronological History, 19352010 Ø How every season unfolded with descriptions of key games and events. Ø Every final table, every result, in the League and in the League’s cup competitions. Ø 316 pages covering 75 years. v Games to Remember Ø Detailed descriptions of 50 of the most memorable games in ECL history. (See list below). v Club histories Ø The history of every one of the 95 clubs to have played in the league since 1935 v Grounds (see introduction above) Ø Descriptions of every one of the 107 different grounds to have hosted ECL football. Amateur Cup, etc. Ø Cup records, every result, details of big matches v County Cups Ø Brief histories of county cups and result of every final in which an ECL club has featured. v Information and records Ø 41 pages of ECL records and historical information Ø Honours lists, promotions and relegations, when clubs joined and when they left. Ø Best and worst records, biggest wins, record goalscorers, etc. Ø Record attendances at ECL grounds Ø Abandoned competitions: Reynolds Cup, Millennium Cup, Jewson Challenge Shield Ø Details of ECL representative games Ø All the Reserve League tables and cups Ø All the Youth League tables and cupwinners Ø How clubs’ colours have changed. • The Stanley Show
Introduction: The Stanley Show Stanley Matthews turned matter-of-factly, his stare fixed to avoid eye contact. His expression, washed of emotion, accentuated the slightly sunken, careworn look that made him appear at least as old as his thirty-two years. Time had already gone to work on his hair. It was combed back and still dark but was in the first stages of retreat. In close-up, something seemed to shadow his features, a sadness possibly pleated in the corners of his mouth. No one could have guessed that here was a man at the soaring peak of his powers who had just brought a packed arena to a ferment of excitement. As Matthews turned, gently hitching the elastic of his loose- fitting shorts on to his hips, the sellout crowd of 75,000 at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels had started to applaud. Moments earlier, England’s outside-right had completed a run that even by his standards was exceptional, bewildering Belgium’s defence and electrifying the spectators. And that was not the end of this particular piece by Matthews on a pitch made treacherous by a violent cloudburst soon after kick-off. Having wrought havoc with the ball on the turf, he dipped his head, cocked his right boot and lifted the ball over the oncoming keeper. One reporter likened it to a golf shot, Matthews seizing a wedge and lofting The Wizard pages.indd 1 23/01/2014 11:15 2 jon henderson the ball in a meticulous arc. All that was left for Tom Finney to do to collect his second goal of the match was to deflect his header into an unguarded net.

5/19/2021 Sectarianism has no place at Man United - spiked Sectarianism has no place at Man United The club was once a refuge from political division. The Palestinian flag could change that. PAUL STOTT 19th May 2021 Topics CULTURE POLITICS UK The parading of the Palestinian flag during Leicester City’s FA Cup winning celebrations, and the indifference of football’s governing bodies, set a precedent for a similar display. Next up was Paul Pogba and Amad Diallo at Old Trafford, after Manchester United’s final home game of the season. More will undoubtedly follow at matches to come. After a year of taking the knee and flaunting the Black Lives Matter logo, the national game now seems to be the place for political statements and gestures. https://www.spiked-online.com/2021/05/19/sectarianism-has-no-place-at-man-united/ 1/3 5/19/2021 Sectarianism has no place at Man United - spiked Football did not used to be like this. Indeed, Manchester United used to be something of a refuge from conflict and intractable political questions. In some parts of the country, the apparently benign questions ‘What school did you go to?’ and ‘What football team do you support?’ have always been deeply loaded. They are really attempts to work out your religion, and from there, your sectarian affiliation and politics. Answering Liverpool or Everton was risky; saying Celtic or Rangers gave you a one-in-two chance of a punch in the face. Answering Manchester United made things more complicated, because United rightly believed they were big enough to rise above sectarian affiliation.

  • White Hart Lane Legends Volume One
WHITE HART LANE LEGENDS VOLUME ONE At four-nil we got a bit anxious. There were quite a lot of tackles flying in and the Press murdered us for it. We managed to pull back a couple of goals, which to be fair, didn’t really reflect how poorly we had played. Bill wasn’t happy about it. With newspapers universally giving us bundles of stick, Bill gave us even more, which got us massively pumped up for the second leg. We came out on to the White Hart Lane pitch for the second game to a continual roar for ninety minutes. Can you describe that atmosphere? We didn’t have seated ends in those days. It was just a huge wall of noise with thousands of shouting Spurs fans willing us on to victory. The crowd was awesome. When the teams came out it wasn’t like the continen- tal scene. We didn’t have a running track between the fans and pitch, ours were bearing right down on top of the opposition. I guess they bottled it to a certain extent. The atmosphere was amazing and the Poles seemed very, very unhappy right from the off. We broke away from the kick off with Bobby Smith immediately smacking their crossbar. We were off, that was it. Unstoppable! I think we would have beaten any team that was, or ever has been, or ever will be, that night. It was simply the best night’s football I ever played in.
