The first club outside Ulster was Dublin Association Football Club which was formed in 1883. At the time, the Irish Football Association (IFA) was the governing body. Based in Belfast, it found it difficult to promote football throughout the country. This led to the formation of the Leinster Football Association in 1892 as the game became more popular in the area. However, there was always a feeling among clubs from outside the Belfast area that the IFA favoured Ulster based clubs-especially when selecting sides for international matches. Despite this, it was not until after the 1916 Rising and the rise of Nationalism that southern affiliates, such as the Leinster FA, took an aggressive approach in their dealings with the IFA. The clubs often threatened to break away, and in early 1921, Bohemians, St. James's Gate and Shelbourne all withdrew from the Irish League, though all three sides decided to remain involved in Cup competitions.

  • Tommy Robson, Who Also Has an Anniversary to Celebrate, with His 50 Year Reign at the Posh!
STOP PRESS! - STOP PRESS! Several PUFC Club Statements were issued late February and the first week of March. 1) Regarding the departure of Grant McCann, 2) The appointment Steve Evans and 3) The announcement of new co-owners Jason Neale and Stewart Thompson. As a result we have produced this supplement to say a few words on these events. Grant McCann The Posh Supporters Trust was sad to see the Posh legend Grant McCann leave the club. We would like to express our appreciation for the work he put into the club as manager over the last 21 months and wish him well for the future. In his first full season as Manager the Posh finished 11th in League 1 and got through to the 3rd Round of the FA Cup where we lost to the Premier League leaders Chelsea. This season started well for Grant winning the August League One Manager of the Month award and leading Posh to the top of League One with a perfect record of four straight wins with a 12- 4 goal differential. In January his Posh side beat Aston Villa 3-1 in the FA Cup before being knocked out by Leicester City in the 4th round Sadly, inconsistent league results more recently didn't go our way and as a result the club parted company with him on the 25th February. As a player Grant made over 180 Football League appearances for the Posh between 2010 and 2015 scoring 29 goals. He played and scored in the League One play off final at Old Trafford against Huddersfield Town in May 2011 and also played in our Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final win against Chesterfield at Wembley in March 2014.

  • “The History of the Eastern Counties Football League”
“THE HISTORY OF THE EASTERN COUNTIES FOOTBALL LEAGUE” Above: Eastern Counties League games have been watched from a wide variety of vantage points. Two postwar ECL games were played in front of the magnificent stands at Arsenal’s Highbury Stadium and Gorleston played Leyton Orient there in an F.A. Cup tie. However the stand at Somersham in their early ECL days was a rather less impressive structure. (For those unfamiliar with the two grounds, Highbury is on the left). The Management Committee of the Eastern Counties Football League is pleased to commemorate the 75 th anniversary of the founding of the League by publishing “The History of the Eastern Counties Football League” in November 2010. This exclusive work consists of more than 740 pages and includes almost 600 photographs, some of which have never previously been published. The book gives a detailed account of the first 75 years of the league’s history and includes: v Chronological History, 19352010 Ø How every season unfolded with descriptions of key games and events. Ø Every final table, every result, in the League and in the League’s cup competitions. Ø 316 pages covering 75 years. v Games to Remember Ø Detailed descriptions of 50 of the most memorable games in ECL history. (See list below). v Club histories Ø The history of every one of the 95 clubs to have played in the league since 1935 v Grounds (see introduction above) Ø Descriptions of every one of the 107 different grounds to have hosted ECL football. Ø Highly illustrated v Players and Personalities Ø 81 pages of pen pictures covering the lives and careers of more than 220 of the best known ECL players and personalities.
