Welcome to the 2019 Downtown Sounds Concert Series!

The Glen Cove Downtown Sounds concert series has achieved a well re- spected, and enviable position in the entertainment field on Long Island. The growth of the series has attracted many talented artists who express their desire to perform at our venue each year. It has now become “The Place to Be!”

We are extremely grateful to Nassau County Legislator, Delia DeRiggi - Whitton for stepping in and supporting our program this year, as well as the City of Glen Cove for their continued support. And a huge thank you to all of our loyal sponsors. None of this would be possible without them.

I would like to acknowledge the dedicated work of our talented committee members, who donate their time and energy throughout the year to make the program run smoothly, and bring you the very best. I would also like to thank the Downtown BID for making this possible. We strive to improve our services and are constantly looking for new ideas to make our shows a better experience, and an enjoyable season for our citizens. History of Downtown Sounds As a way to bring people into the downtown, the Glen Cove Down- town B.I.D. in 1997 created its first free concert series, Jazz in The Square. It was a hit. During the following years, the concert series evolved to accommodate a variety of musical styles that broad- ened its appeal to residents and visitors alike. Today, the event— now known as Downtown Sounds — is jointly produced through a partnership between the Glen Cove Downtown Business Improve- ment District and Nassau County.

The city of Glen Cove has a long history of fine musical events, which began in 1959 with the Morgan Park Summer Music Festival, now celebrating its 60th anniversary. Downtown Sounds and the Downtown B.I.D. continues to fulfill our vision of making Glen Cove the “Music Capital of the North Shore.”

Every Friday night during July & August, the downtown Village Square comes alive with music featuring East Coast area artists. With the sounds of jazz, rhythm and blues, rock, latin and other genres fill- ing the air, the public enjoys great music while dancing and dining in our open and inviting downtown area. Many downtown businesses find they receive benefits beyond increased foot traffic and public awareness by becoming a sponsor of Downtown Sounds. Dear Music Lovers,

It is well established that music is a tie that binds us together. This was evident this year when Downtown Sounds hit a financial bump on the road. Beginning in 2010, the City of Glen Cove partnered with the Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District ( B.I.D.) to bring our community 9 weeks of free summer concerts. This year, because of necessary and understandable budget cuts, it is no secret that the Downtown Sounds started off with financial difficulty.

Fortunately, we live in a community where our leaders know how important the music of Downtown Sounds is to our residents, visitors and our businesses. So without haste, Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton stepped in to secure a $25,000 grant from the Nassau County Hotel-Motel Occupancy Tax Fund to ensure that the tradition of Downtown Sounds continues.

What a perfect example of music binding the community together: with the Glen Cove Downtown B.I.D. and Nassau County funding, the City of Glen Cove munici- pal services, our generous sponsors and the Downtown Sounds committee, we are thrilled to present to you the 22nd year of Downtown Sounds.

Downtown Sounds is steeped in tradition, but this year’s series will be marked by some exciting changes. In addition to the new line-up, the committee is proud to announce our new affiliation with local radio station WCWP.

I thank the talented and hardworking Downtown Sounds committee, with a special thank you to Toni Kessel who went above and beyond, my assistant Jill Nossa and most of all you. It gives me incredible joy to see all the happy faces enjoying Downtown Sounds.

As the owner and engineer of Tiki Recording Studios, Fred Guarino has been supplying quality services, great equip- ment, a comfortable recording environment and talented engineers to a plethora of musical acts for the past 40 years. Beginning with an eight-track studio in the base- ment of his parents’ home, it wasn’t long before Fred opened shop with a brand new studio that has blossomed as a Glen Cove business since 1983. Indeed, throughout its existence, Tiki has remained at the cutting edge in an industry where recording and technology trends are contin- ually evolving. For example, in 2004, Fred sold his studio to recording artist Alicia Keys and downsized to his current location on Glen Street. The move allowed him to incorpo- rate the most modern technology in a more intimate environment and Tiki Recording now features modern equip- ment along with traditional analog gear. The combination allows for a hybrid analog/digital recording approach that has been well received by the artists he works with. Over his 40 years, these include Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Jimmy Webb, Ashanti, Maureen McGovern, Billy J. Kramer, Odet- ta, Joan Osborne, Phoebe Snow, Peter Allen, Brian Setzer, Kenny Rogers, James Earle Jones, Woody Allen, Andy Cooney and Crystal Gayle. Throughout his career, Fred has earned numerous Grammy nominations for projects he has recorded and in addition to being the chairperson for Downtown Sounds, was National President of the Soci- ety of Professional Recording Studios. DEPUTY MAYOR MAUREEN BASDAVANOS

Community involvement has always been a top priority for Maureen Basda- vanos. The daughter of Irish immigrants, Maureen Moran graduated from North Shore High School and attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School. After finishing the program, she worked for Coca Cola as an executive secretary and administrative assistant followed by stints as office manager, bookkeeper and assistant to the director at a variety of organizations including the Christopher D. Smithers Foundation. During this time, she married Bill Basdavanos and had children Sean and Kelly. However, from when her children were young, Maureen still found time to dedicate to community service serving as a Cub Scout and Brownie leader, Jr. Football Cheerlead- ing Coach and Booster Club Public Relations Officer. She is also a long- standing Board Member of Glen Cove C.A.R.E.S. and a member of the La- dies Ancient Order of Hibernians. But Maureen’s biggest commitment to the people of Glen Cove was made in 2008 when Mayor Ralph Suozzi asked her to serve as his Deputy Mayor, which she did until 2013. At that point, she decided to retire and spend time traveling and enjoying her family; however, her plan was short lived. In 2017, duty again called when new Mayor Tim Tenke asked her to return to the Deputy Mayor role and she gladly consent- ed. “There is no other job I would have considered at this point in my life,” she says. “But with this job, I know I can make a difference and give back to my hometown. And what’s better than that?” MARY COOPER

Working as a mother’s helper, Mary Cooper relocated to Glen Cove from the South in 1956. It was love at first site. She came from a family of 15 children and once she moved to Glen Cove, she married and had two children of her own. Glen Cove won her over because she saw it as a family- oriented place. She now has grandchildren and great grandchildren in addition to many children and adolescents in the community that benefit from her wisdom. Her community work began with the Glen Cove Housing Au- thority and spread to the Glen Cove Youth Board of which she is an original board member. Working with the Youth Board lead to her involvement with the Business Improvement District and Downtown Sounds where she has been impressed with the progress that the series has made over the years. She also volunteers her time to SAFE, which provides drug prevention services to the community. Mary derives great satisfaction from volunteering because it allows her to help people. Celebrating her 80th birthday this summer, Mary’s youthful exuberance and propensity to help others is an inspira- tion to old and young alike. “I don’t like idle time,” she explains. “I like stay- ing busy and I like making people happy. So, volunteering my time to help the people of Glen Cove is perfect for me. I like to help the kids of today get the things that I wasn’t able to get when I was their age. But I also teach them to appreciate what they have. I’m down in the dump sometimes, but people don’t know it because I always stay positive.” FRED DIMENNA:

During 20 years as a competitor bodybuilder, Fred DiMenna won two ama- teur drug-free Mr. United States competitions including one that earned him his pro card in 1994. He went on to compete 11 times as a pro including a runner-up placement in the heavyweight class of the 1998 WNBF Pro Natural International. He retired from competition in 2003 and returned to school to pursue his Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology at Adelphi University. After graduating with a 4.0, he left native Glen Cove to obtain his PhD at the Uni- versity of Exeter, the leading university for sports science in the U.K. His PhD supervisor was renowned physiologist Andy Jones and his research was in the field of oxygen uptake kinetics. After returning to the U.S., he has continued to work with the group at Exeter in addition to assuming a position as a Research Associate in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Bone Disease for the Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital in Manhattan. He also works with researchers at the Pulmonary Institute at the Chaim Sheba Medical Center in Israel and the Faculdade de Ciências at São Paulo State University in Brazil. Through these affiliations, he has amassed 40 PubMed publications. For the past eight years, he has served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Movement Sciences at Columbia University Teachers College while in 2014, he assumed what might be his most daunting challenge yet organizing the chaos at the View Grill, his wife Jeanine’s restaurant. MICHAEL “EPPY” EPSTEIN

For 17 years, 19 Bryant Avenue in Roslyn was the site of Long Island’s equiva- lent to Manhattan’s CBGB and L.A.’s Whiskey a Go Go. However, neither of those musical palaces had Michael “Eppy” Epstein as its mastermind. Eppy was the owner of My Father's Place, which served as a cultural capital for an entire generation of Long Islanders. The day the music died at MFB was in 1987; however, when you mention the club to Eppy today, the twinkle in his eye breathes life into the lost, but not forgotten era. “The place was a bowling alley before we made it into a club,” he explains. “Richie Havens opened it on Memorial Day of 1971. Anyone who was around played there, but from the start, we were all about developing new talent.” That talent included Bruce Springsteen, The Police and a local up-and-comer who filled in when Charlie Daniels was scheduled, but had laryngitis. “He was recording his first solo album and we asked him to be the piano man that night,” Eppy recalls. “And that was Billy Joel's first live radio broadcast.” Given its profound influence, there is no doubt that the music world mourned the death of MFB when Tower of Power performed the club’s final concert; however, given recent events, any epitaphs appear premature. Indeed, in November of 2017, Eppy reached an agreement to bring the club back to life in the ballroom of the Roslyn Hotel and its rebirth began with a performance by Buster Poindexter on June 29. They say we can’t go home again, but it appears that Eppy just proved them wrong! FRANCINE KOEHLER

Experiencing the growth of Downtown Sounds from its inception as Jazz in the Square in 1997, Francine Koehler saw an event she envisioned evolve into reality. In 2004, as Executive Director of the Glen Cove Business Im- provement District, Francine decided that a more eclectic blend of music would attract a larger audience. “I envisioned a musical event that would appeal to a broad base of the community,” she explains. “Over time, the City of Glen Cove became a partner. This allowed us to extend the concert schedule from July into August. And the many wonderful sponsors that sup- ported us throughout the years gave us the ability to provide great talent. Watching Downtown Sounds flourish over the past two decades has been one of the most satisfying experiences of my life. It’s a joy to see so many people – friends, neighbors and newcomers to Glen Cove – enjoying themselves on the streets of downtown on Friday nights.” Consistent with her vision, the change from the all-jazz format that Francine instituted broad- ened the horizons of Downtown Sounds allowing it to grow to what is has become today and she was at the helm for all of that growth. However, she retired early last year, which left the series in the hands of new Execu- tive Director Patricia Holman. “When I turned the reins over to Patricia, I was confident that Downtown Sounds would continue to flourish as part of the fabric that weaves us all together.” Given the success of last year’s series, it’s safe to say that Francine’s vision in this regard has also come to fruition. KEITH WAY

As a teenager washing dishes in a restaurant in Vermont, Keith Way’s journey to the top of the hospitality industry started inauspiciously. However, a few years later, Keith attended the Culinary Institute of America, which paved the way for his future success. At CIA, Keith met Arno Schmidt, who brought him into the Big Apple chapter of the American Culinary Federa- tion. This opened up many job opportunities for Keith who began working as Assistant Steward at the Westbury Hotel. After a month, he was promot- ed to Chief Steward and after a few years, became Food & Beverage Di- rector and Banquet Manager. He moved on to positions as Banquet Man- ager at the Park Lane Hotel and U.N. Plaza Hotel where he hosted dignitaries including former President Gerald Ford. After 20 years of working in ho- tels, Keith wanted to spend more time with his family so he began working for Breakfast Productions, a boutique bread & pastry company that even- tually merged with Voila! Bakeries. During his time at Breakfast Productions, Keith was named Purveyor of the Year by the Food & Beverage Association of America. He also worked for three years with Bouley Bakery before retir- ing. Nowadays, he stays active on the local front helping Chef Jeanine Di- Menna with operations at the View Grill and, of course, also dedicates his time and energy to Downtown Sounds. Thirty-three-year residents of Glen Cove, he & wife Jennifer participate in many other local events, but also enjoy travelling the globe.

PAT MCLAUGHLIN

When Downtown Sounds started as Jazz in the Square, local musicians played before modest crowds at the Glen Cove Village Square. Contrast that with the modern version where world-renowned artists like John Oates, Jimmy Webb and Billy J. Kramer play on the Village Square stage and it should be apparent that the stakes have been raised when it comes to technical support. Enter Pat McLaughlin, the man who puts the sound in the downtown.

A veteran in the field, Pat has operated PMB audio since 1979 providing sound and other technical services to many major artists in all musical genres. In addition to the Glen Cove Village Square, locations where Pat has plied his trade include Lincoln Center and the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center for the U.S. Open. What is more, he currently provides audio services for NBC’s The Today Show, the fifth-longest-running American televi- sion series. The show is routinely viewed by five million or more people per week.

However, the notoriety Pat gains from working on such a prestigious televi- sion series does not come without a price. Live music performances are fre- quently featured on the show and delivering the sound through a narrow space between tall buildings with pavement below and a crowd of audience members is a daunting challenge. Indeed, it requires the coordination of many talented people just to get the music portions of the show on the air and Pat is front & center in the process working hand in hand with each band’s monitor engineer.

Lifelong Glen Cove resident Toni Kessel has served as Nassau County Legis- lator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton’s Legislative Assistant since 2013. During her ten- ure, she has worked closely with the Legislator to bring numerous important community initiatives to fruition within the 11th Legislative District, which 11th Legislative District which encompasses Sands Point, Port Washington, Roslyn, Roslyn Harbor, Glen Head, Glenwood, Sea Cliff and Glen Cove. These initiatives include securing the $25,000 Nassau County grant that made this summer’s Downtown Sounds concert series possible.

Toni, who is married and has two daughters, has enjoyed serving on the Downtown Sounds committee for the last five years and doing her part to ensure the success of Glen Cove’s signature summer concert series. She is delighted to be joining the community for an array of outstanding live performances in this one-of-a-kind setting in the heart of Glen Cove. JILL NOSSA

New to the committee this year, Jill Nossa has enjoyed being a part of the preparations for the concert series. Since moving to Glen Cove in 2009, Downtown Sounds has been an event she has looked forward to every summer, and she has been thrilled to see how it’s grown over the years. As editor of the Glen Cove Record Pilot, she’s made it a point to help spread the word about the concerts each week and is looking forward to another season. Jill has been reporting for the pa- per for the past 10 years and has been editor since January 2012.

In her time in Glen Cove, she has met a lot of interesting and inspiring people and has been happy that she and her husband, Rick, decided to make Glen Cove their home. When not covering a story or working a BID event, she can be found at local beaches and play- grounds with her daughters, or watching her husband play guitar in one of his multiple bands.

Almost Selena July 5th

A tribute to the queen of Tejano music, this show is a vibrant, explosive and exciting eruption of the music and talent of Sele- na. Peat Moss & The Fertilizers July 12th

Peat Moss & The Fertilizers are the most animated, fun loving and talented group of performers on the circuit today. Together since high school, this tight-knit group of friends have come a long way, with thousands of performances under their belt. Their ever- expanding song list of fun, upbeat material wows all music from any age group………………………………………………………………….. One thing heard time and time again about the band is that they possess tremendous energy and a love of their craft, which shines through in every performance. This provides the audience with a "vacation from reality," as one viewer remarked. Peat Moss and The Fertilizers will never let you down and never leave an audience un- fulfilled. July 19 Bennie and the Jets is the premier Elton John tribute band. Bennie and the Jets is led by Greg Ransom, whose vocals are naturally exactly like Elton John's and his piano playing is right on the money. Greg has the ability to make you believe that you're at an Elton John concert.

At age 21, Greg was playing piano in a hotel bar when the owner of the hotel requested an Elton John song. Greg played “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues.” The hotel owner approached him afterwards and told him he sounded like Elton vocally, and that he should consider putting on the hat and glasses and forming a tribute band.

By 1995, Bennie and the Jets were formed with Greg Ransom on piano and vocals, Dan Moraski on guitar and backing vocals, Bob Lilja on drums and backing vocals, and Ken Walpur- gis on bass. They played two local gigs in the Springfield area before receiving a call from a nationally known entertainment broker who needed an Elton band, so Greg sent him a tape.

From that day forward Bennie and the Jets became an international touring act. Bob Lilja was soon replaced with Steve Lawton on drums and backing vocals and Ken Walpurgis was replaced with Mike Gibbs on bass and backing vocals. This re- mains their current line-up. Helping To Make Glen Cove Great! Bon Journey July 26th

Bon Journey is a New York-based tribute band paying tribute to rock icons Bon Jovi and Journey. Bon Journey’s high energy show has been exciting and entertaining fans throughout the Tri-State area since 2010. Bon Journey is a unique tribute band that blends the music of both Bon Jovi and Journey within each set. There is also a "Rock Of 80s" Show that is performed at special events! They not only capture the sound of each

group, but their energy and spirit as well. Bon Journey's set includes all the classic hits that fans have enjoyed for over three decades, including but not limited to "Living on a Prayer," "Don't Stop Believing," as well as their tender ballads "Faithfully" and "I'll Be There for You."

The Hey Nows August 2nd

The Hey Nows are a show-stopping, top 40 party rock band with a special knack for connecting with their audience at every show. Hail- ing from the Hudson Valley region of New York, this wedding, event and club band performs all over the tri-state area and New England, but is always game to travel anywhere party rock services are needed!

Independently, each band member brings a special and unique fla- vor from varied experiences with other rock, country, and pop bands- -but together, they combine to create the perfect blend of seasoned professionalism and youthful energy. While this versatile group covers everything from to Tom Petty to The Chainsmokers, they are often sought after by both the wedding and bar circuits for their ‘90s throwbacks and rocked up versions of the latest hits.

Right On Band August 9th

Right On Band is an authentic “Ten-Piece Show Band” with a full horn section. They have performed all over the world including: Italy, Ethiopia, Canada, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas.

They have had the honor of performing for each of the last three United States Presidents, and also entertained the US Congress inside “The White House”, as well as other celebrities, dignitaries and heads of state around the world.

The Right On Band is known for their outlandish ’70s costumes. Specializing in Motown, Disco, and ‘70s Funk, the band has been keeping the ‘70s alive for more than 18 years.

Tribute to ABBA

August 16th

Dancing Dream: The Tribute to ABBA, the greatest pop supergroup from Sweden, electrifies audiences of all ages with the best hits "Mamma Mia," "Dancing Queen," "Take a Chance," "Fernando" and many more. The New York City based touring tribute act was founded by two European singers Halina Ulatowski and Agnes Jawien in 2009 in hopes of transporting nostalgic audiences back to the happy and groovy times of the '70s. Because of the rise in popularity of both the movie and Broadway play "Mamma Mia," Dancing Dream was able to do just that! Since then, they have been invited to many summer concerts across the country attracting audiences of all age groups. Misty Mountain August 23rd

A new band, Misty Mountain, has emerged on the scene as a rocking tribute band blasting the songs of Led Zeppelin across Long Island. With guitar licks reminiscent of Jimmy Page and howling vocals that bring back memories of Robert Plant, the band transports audiences back to the days of power rock and roll. The band started to come together in 2012 when lead guitarist Elliot Negrin and lead singer Ed Terry met on the local scene performing together in different projects. The band was complete with the addition of Shawn Murray on drums and Alan Levy on bass. The four accomplished musicians of Misty Mountain started blending and developed a sound eerily similar to Led Zeppelin’s performances. High quality service that meets your pets specific needs.

Kamellot is fast becoming one of the premier tribute bands gracing stages in and around Long Island as they offer a powerful take on classic rock and blue standards to energetic and enraptured audiences. The band started in 2012 when percussionist Dr. G and lead guitarist Elliot Negrin met on the local scene in search of a particular sound. Bonding over a mutual love of rock, rhythm and blues, and a desire to bring positive vibes, they began looking for the right mix. As the band developed it became quickly apparent that a powerful force was emerging producing a tight sound and ex- ceptional energy.

The band grew with the addition of lead singer Ed Terry and sax man Wayne Wofford. Their powerful soul-infused sound added layers to an al- ready deep musical voice. The finished product including Stu Waters on keys, Shawn Murray on drums, Krista Marie on vocals and Alan Levy on bass produce rocking renditions of timeless hits. Dressed to the nines, Dean Ford embodies PRINCE with every fiber of his being, giving you a show as close as you will ever get to the real thing. Ford and company perform all the hits you know and love, including the “Purple Rain” album in its entirety. But, it's more than just the songs. He's got the look, the moves, and the sounds down jaw-droppingly well. So well, you'll forget it's only a tribute. It all started in 2011, when Dean Ford and his musician friends put on their first of many sold out tributes to the Pur- ple One in Portland, Maine. The show, lovingly entitled "Purple Brainz" is now held annually at the prestigious, Port City Music Hall. Past shows have featured Prince and The Revolution’s own keyboardist Matt “Doctor” Fink. Lately, Ford has been sticking with a rotation of his core band, The Beautiful Ones. Though, he and the band have plenty of surprises up their frilled sleeves. Urban Artist Design Downtown Banners

The Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District and Downtown Sounds are thrilled to work in collaboration with First City Project on a series of banners throughout the downtown that feature urban themed artists. This collaboration is part of an initiative to create a vibrant, exciting arts-filled downtown environment. The artists featured in this program represent the creators of the new banners designed expressly for Downtown Sounds 2018.

First City Project has a goal to introduce the residents of the City of Glen Cove and surrounding communities to the next generation of urban themed artists through the transformation of a 9000 square foot historic structure. The Coles House as a designated city landmark structure has architecture details dating back to 1810 with additional portions that could be traced back as far as 1690. It was the home to one of the original five founding families of the City of Glen Cove. This building has long been neglected and essentially abandoned for years until local businessman Joe LaPadula had a vision to infuse new life into the structure through an ambitious art program. The essence of FCP is to use Coles House as a platform to introduce the community of Glen Cove to a new genre of art and showcase the rising local area talents with numerous NY area street art professionals. FCP aims to start a dialogue with the community where a balance can be achieved through a new art medium and a new spirit of creativity that can rise along- side the traditional values within the first city on Long Island. The Downtown B.I.D. & Downtown Sounds are excited to be a part of this dialogue.
