ON THE COVER UP IN THE AIR The bats may be Austin’s preferred winged creature, but in Wimberley, it’s the butterfly that’s basking in the spotlight. Every April, the town cele- brates life with the release of thousands of butterflies and fanfare to boot at the annual Butterfly Festival, hosted by the EmilyAnn Theater and Gar- dens. The 21st annual event takes place April 27 and kicks off with an opening ceremony at the Wimberly Veterans Memorial to honor lives lost in the past year, and the day continues with food, crafts, games, bounce houses, entertainment, and more. Guests can celebrate the winged wonder with T-shirts, live butterflies in individual boxes, colorful butterfly wings and wands, and butterfly tiaras. In addition to the release of 4,000 butterflies, and a live Flight House featuring hundreds of native butterflies, an art exhibit celebrates the 2019 EmilyAnn Artist of the Year—youngsters can put their most artistic foot forward with the annual art contest, in partnership with Frisco ISD. The best-in-show butterfly becomes part of the EmilyAnn’s permanent collection. For more information, visit emilyann.org/butterfly or call 512-847-6969.
