Clergy in the Diocese of Dunedin 1852-1919 a biographical directory of Anglican clergy who served in Otago and Southland Compiled by Michael Blain First edition 2003 Copyright the Reverend Dr. Michael Blain, 2003 Reproduced online with permission at http://anglicanhistory.org Address inquiries to [email protected] Clergy in the Diocese of Dunedin 1852-1919 A biographical directory of Anglican clergy who served in Otago and Southland Compiled by Michael Blain (2003) 2 Introduction This biographical directory features all the Anglican priests who served in the southern regions of the South Island of New Zealand between 1852 and 1919. 1852 marks the licensing of John Fenton the first Anglican priest with pastoral responsibilities in the new town of Dunedin. 1919 marks the retirement of the first bishop of Dunedin, Samuel Tarratt Nevill. Between these two dates some 200 clergy came and went from Otago and Southland, the region served now by the Anglican diocese of Dunedin. All of them here receive attentive research. They prove to be a fascinating group of people, whose backgrounds, careers, and connections offer a unique insight into colonial Otago. George Augustus Selwyn, the bishop of New Zealand (from his appointment on 10 October 1841 to his resignation in May 1869) was the epitome of a missionary—going everywhere fast, staying nowhere long in his efforts to reach everyone in every place. He met the leading colonists and church members in Dunedin in 1848, but had no priest to offer them until after the two dozen ships and chaplains of the Canterbury Association had arrived two years later in Canterbury. -

George Howard Douglas Connor 2012 Abstract This thesis shows that Anglican theological training for Māori in the years from 1883 to 1921 was in te reo Māori at Te Rau College, Gisborne, and surveys, in particular, the text books used, analysing what those text book indicators show about Māori theological education. This thesis examines the role of architecture as a tool for communication in the growing Victorian church through a case study of St John’s College, Auckland, established by George Augustus Selwyn, the Bishop of New Zealand and Melanesia, in 1842. This study identifies the strategies employed to make the College complex speak to its students, the Church and the outside world and shows the ways in which this architecture contributed to the theological and ecclesiological message of the Church. The building program at St. John’s College not only established a material presence of the Church of England in the South Pacific, but became of central importance to the realization of Selwyn’s goals for his mission. -

New Zealand Journal of History, 52, 1 (2018) From Aide-memoire to Public Memorial THE ‘GORDON COLLECTION’ OF PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAITS RELATING TO THE NEW ZEALAND WARS ON 28 OCTOBER 2017, New Zealand’s inaugural Raa Maumahara National Day of Commemoration was held. This day is dedicated to recognizing, remembering and retelling histories relating to the New Zealand Wars of 1845–1872, which had issues of sovereignty and land at their core and were, as James Belich writes, as ‘important to New Zealand as were the Civil Wars to England and the United States’.1 Just over 100 years ago, in 1916, the Dominion Museum in Wellington purchased the ‘Gordon Collection’, which holds material of great relevance to the current commitment to better acknowledge past conflicts. Compiled by William Francis Gordon over a lengthy period, the collection consisted of ‘portraits, maps, diagrams, &c., relating to the Maori wars of the “sixties”’.2 One of its most valuable aspects, as far as the museum director James Allan Thomson was concerned, was a remarkable portrait collection of photographs depicting officers and men who fell in action, New Zealand Victoria Cross holders, New Zealand Cross holders, officers, rebel Hauhau chiefs and associated civilians. Gordon’s collection is one of the most comprehensive photographic records of the New Zealand Wars. Although, as William Main noted, ‘some surprisingly good images have come forward from what might have seemed a hopeless photographic situation’, compared to international conflicts of a similar nature, such as the Crimean and Abyssinian wars (1853–1856 and 1867–1868) and the American Civil War (1861–1865), the New Zealand Wars were less purposefully documented by photography.3 Within British militarist discourse the gun and the camera were considered equivalent ‘weapons within a praxis of colonial power’.4 Consequently, the British military incorporated photography into their training for Royal Engineers from the 1850s, recognizing its potential to record scenes accurately, as well as to reproduce maps and plans for circulation.
