The focus is on Plato's political thought and my aim is to examine politics and language within the context of Plato's belief in and desire for order. I try to show how he connects the way language is used with the political life of a community. I argue that he identifies a link between the stability of a political association and the uses, and users, of language. Given his fundamental belief in a metaphysical order, existing beyond and prior to human existence, I argue that Plato seeks to anchor language and politics, to rationalise them in accordance with the the universal harmony characterised by the Forms. In making this argument I try to show that, for Plato, the spread of order logically culminates in a harmonisation of the physical and metaphysical. So much is this so, I claim, that the stability of order in any sphere of human existence depends on the existence of order in all other spheres. Thus, an orderly political association, one organised in accordance with Platonic moral principles, simply cannot exist if the language its members share does not exhibit the very same order. Psychological order is the avenue through which the metaphysical order enters human affairs. Given the Greek assumption that life in the polis is the natural life for man, examination of the human psyche becomes for Plato also an examination of communal, or associative, living. The moral as intrinsically part of the political. Plato is concerned with both the quality of the association and the quality of its mode of interaction. Both politics and language must be harmonised to ensure a concordance between human existence and the metaphysical order in which Plato believes. 1 Acknowledgements It is harder at this stage to determine who or what does not merit acknowledgment than to determine who or what should be acknowledged. It seems to me that even a minor change in circumstances or acquaintances would have resulted in a profoundly different thesis. Such a belief is impossible to validate, but I am able to see in these pages the influences of certain people and certain events that helped make it what it is. A number of individuals have read parts of this work at various stages of completion. Professor Janet Coleman, my supervisor, has read it in its entirety at a time when it was all but complete. Throughout the exhilarating ordeal of writing the thesis, she has been the very picture of encouragement and support. If she can recognise herself in these pages, it will confirm how much I value her advice and friendship. Matt Matravers, Vittorio Bufacchi and Duncan Iveson have been boon companions during the last four years. They have listened, read and argued the^ way only true friends can. I thank them for all they have done for me and for all I have learned from them. If that learning does not appear clearly in this work, I can only blame it on my failure to pay sufficiently close attention. It may be a mitigating factor that much of the learning occurred in the pubs around the LSE. 2 Finally, I must acknowledge the LSE itself. The Government Department at the LSE concentrates these days on contemporary political philosophy. My anomalous position as an historian of political thought has given me insights into the vast, but not unbridgeable, space existing between the ancients and the moderns. If anything, this has underscored for me the need to do history as part of a well-rounded approach to political theory. On

In his most important writing in this field called "Politics", Aristotle classified authority in the form of two main parts: the correct authority and moose authority. In this sense, correct forms of government are 1.basileus, 2.aristocracy and 3.politeia. These forms of government are based on the common good. Bad or moose forms of government are those that are based on the property of an individual or small governmental structures and they are: 1.tiranny, 2.oligarchy and 3.democracy. Also, Aristotle's political thinking is not separate from the ethical principles so he states that the government should be reflected in the true virtue that is "law" or the "golden mean". Aristotle was born around 384 BCE (in Stagira, far north of Athens but still a ‘Greek’ city) and died around 322 BCE, so he lived into his early sixties. b. That means he was born about fifteen years after the trial and execution of Socrates. He would have been approximately 45 years younger than Plato, under whom he was eventually sent to study at the Academy in Athens. c. Aristotle stayed at the Academy for twenty years, eventually becoming a teacher there himself. When Plato died in 347 BCE, though, the leadership of the school passed on not to Aristotle, but to Plato’s nephew Speusippus. (As in the Republic, the stubborn reality of Plato’s family connections loomed large.) d. After living in Asia Minor from 347-343 BCE, Aristotle was invited by King Philip of Macedon to serve as the tutor for Philip’s son Alexander (yes, the Great). Aristotle taught Alexander for eight years, then returned to Athens in 335 BCE. There he founded his own school, the Lyceum. i. Aside: We should remember that these schools had substantial afterlives, not simply as ideas in texts, but as living sites of intellectual energy and exchange. The Academy lasted from 387 BCE until 83 BCE, then was re-founded as a ‘Neo-Platonic’ school in 410 CE. It was finally closed by Justinian in 529 CE. (Platonic philosophy was still being taught at Athens from 83 BCE through 410 CE, though it was not disseminated through a formalized Academy.) The Lyceum lasted from 334 BCE until 86 BCE, when it was abandoned as the Romans sacked Athens.

    Diametros nr 8 (czerwiec 2006): 56– 67 Is Political Life A Happy Life According To Aristotle? Tomasz Kuniski Aristotle’s conception of happy life is still a matter of debate among scholars. It is not obvious whether in his works Aristotle introduced only one idea of happy life or more. The status of political life is neither clear and further questions can be raised; does Aristotle consider it as a happy life, does happiness constitute of political life and what is the relation between political and theoretical life. In this article I shall try to examine these issues. I shall refer to the best known and accomplished Aristotelian interpretations by Kraut and Broadie as well as to interpretative articles by other authors. First I shall reconstruct their main line of argument, then I shall try to show the advantages and drawbacks (if any) of their interpretations and finally I shall give my own point of view on this matter and, perhaps, reconcile different views on the connection between political and theoretical life in Aristotle’s ethics. As most commentators, I shall focus mainly on the Nicomachean Ethics and occasionally refer to other Aristotle’s ethical works. I think that this approach can be justified by the fact, that, firstly, it is mainly the Nicomachean Ethics that raises difficulties in interpreting Aristotle’s view on happy life, secondly, as some may argue, Aristotle contradicts himself in this treatise. Although Richard Kraut is sure about consistency of Aristotle’s ethical theory, he is aware that this kind of argument can be raised: “Of course, if Aristotle says in one place that happiness consists in contemplation alone, and elsewhere that it consists in other goods as well, then he has contradicted himself”1.

    Analyse & Kritik 27/2005 ( c Lucius & Lucius, Stuttgart) p. 259{273 Kelvin Knight Aristotelianism versus Communitarianism Abstract: Alasdair MacIntyre is an Aristotelian critic of communitarianism, which he understands to be committed to the politics of the capitalist and bureaucratic nation- state. The politics he proposes instead is based in the resistance to managerial insti- tutions of what he calls `practices', because these are schools of virtue. This shares little with the communitarianism of a Taylor or the Aristotelianism of a Gadamer. Although practices require formal institutions. MacIntyre opposes such conservative politics. Conventional accounts of a `liberal-communitarian debate' in political phi- losophy face the dilemma that Alasdair MacIntyre, often identified as a paradigmatic communitarian, has consistently and emphatically repudiated this characterization. Although neo-Aristotelianism is sometimes seen as a philosophical warrant for commu- nitarian politics, MacIntyre's Aristotelianism is opposed to communitarianism. This paper explores the rationale of that opposition. 1. Communitarianisms The term \communitarianism" was used by imaginative polemicists in the 1980s, and has been used by unimaginative textbook writers since then, to signify the criticism by a variety of Anglophone political philosophers of John Rawls' A Theory of Justice for resting upon overly individualist premisses. Despite the synthesizing efforts of Amitai Etzioni, it does not represent a coherent philo- sophical position. Nor can it do so unless some one theorist is chosen as its representative. Perhaps the best Anglophone candidate for such a position is Charles Taylor, yet Taylor considers the liberal-communitarian debate to have been conducted at `cross-purposes', with regard both to `ontological' issues of social theory and to moral or `advocacy' issues (Taylor 1989).

Whether on matters of politics or physics, Aristotle's criticism of his pre­ decessors is not generally considered a model of charitable interpretation. He seems to prefer, as Christopher Rowe puts it, "polemic over accuracy" (2003, 90). His criticism of the Laws is particularly puzzling: It is much shorter than his discussion of the Republic and raises primarily technical objections of questionable validity. Indeed, some well-known commenta­ tors have concluded the criticisms, as we have them in the Politics, were made of an earlier draft of the Lt~ws and that Plato, in light of these criti­ cisms, revised the final version.

AVICENNA (370?-428 AH—980?-1037 AD) cAbd al-Rahman al Naqib1 This study attempts to present the educational aspects of an Arab thinker considered by ancient and modern scholars alike as the most famous of the Muslim philosophers.2 Thus al- Dhahbi describes him as ‘the leader of Islamic philosophy’.3 G.C. Anawati has prepared a full bibliography of Avicenna’s writings.4 In 1950, to commemorate the thousandth anniversary of his birth, the Dar al-Kutub al-Misriyya (Egyptian National Library) published a printed list of the titles of his works and their commentaries which are preserved there. We need only consult this list, containing more than 150 printed works and manuscripts and including all the branches of knowledge in his day, even poetry, to evaluate the extent of the culture which Avicenna acquired and handed on to us. Avicenna’s most famous works are those on philosophy and medicine. His philosophical views have engaged the attention of Western thinkers over several centuries, and his books have been among the most important sources in philosophy. In medicine, his great work, al-Qanun (The Canon), was translated into Latin towards the end of the twelfth century AD, and became a reference source for medical studies in the universities of Europe until the end of the seventeenth century.5 Avicenna has attracted the attention of scholars, past and present, who have written books, treatises and articles on him.
