What is the cost of love?By XanthosiaThis is another superb book to add to the saga of the Ashers and Ysidro. The time is just before the start of World War One when the political upheavals and jostling for advantage of the Balkan States allows a vampire to escape from his master and flee to England. Miranda, their young child is kidnapped by Grippen to force James and Lydia to hunt for this new arrival. This is a gripping tale told with conviction by a master story teller. Hambley does not pander to a lazy audience and expects her readers to have a good vocabularly or a good dictionary. I am always entertained by the new vocabulary introduced when I read her stories. Rodomontade, incunabula, fortalice.........words to intrigue and describe. Her historical research whether about the politics of the day, London architecture and houses with noble floors and Houses of Office, the Boer War is a detailed, interesting back drop for the action of the story. The sounds, smells and sights of Edwardian England seem just a touch away. What intrigues me most about these books and is the central theme of " The Kindred of Darkness" is the question of our morality and the choices one has to make when dealing with something inhuman. As Ysidro says " No good can come of friendship between the living and the dead. There are no easy answers and the reader is led to question what is their own morality through the choices offered to the various characters. By the end of the book, James has decided and I quietly wonder if his choice is signalling the end of the series.Love is also another major theme. Hambley gives two examples of parents willing to sacrifice all for their child but in such different ways. Both are poignant but one gives an unexpected and horrific twist to the plot. Of course the Ashers love their child but we see that Armistead, the menacing cold American business man is willing to sacrifice just as much for the love of his child.I love Barbara Hambley's sly humour and it offers a nice contrast to the darkness and horror in the story. Ysidro is such a snob. He can't bear to think of the eating habits of American vampires.I found the final paragraphs of the book utterly perfect. James is lying in bed with his family. He has made his choice - all vampires are the enemy so he is waiting for daylight to come, a signal of a fresh start for everyone. This is a wonderful meaty story that will entertain time and again.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I loved it. Can't wait for the next oneBy TraelingI loved it. Can't wait for the next one. Hambly's "vampire series" is awesome to behold. She stays very true to the whole concept of this series. The historical pre world war one background. The characters where no one is quite the white knight nor are they the epitome of evil. Her vampires are vampires in the true since of the word - no shiny misunderstood Byrons here, thank you very much. There is also a very interesting twist and possibly a hint of Yisidro's background that long term fans will love. And boy has she set it up for the next book. The last thing I will say is that one of the big pluspoints of this series is that Hambly is still writing it and it is getting published. If you are not familiar with her she has an amazing set of books (series) unfortunetly many are not finished and are not currently being published. This one is.Oh - and if you do know her other work and love it, then you might be interested to know she currently self publishes some short stories on her website for purchase. They aren't full novels but you will find Antros, Starhawk, the Darwith world and others there. I was very pleased about this and hope you will be to.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Better than everBy Long time collectorI have been a fan since Those Who Hunt the Night - and all the books have been good. I did wish there had been a bit more of Simon in Magistrates of Hell, but thats just a quibble. But this one is the best since Hunt ! I am a historian , so I know the period detail is right, and the plot is exciting, and makes sense( I've read some pretty illogical stuff lately)I enjoy Hambly's Benjamin January books too, and the Abigale Adams series. I really enjoy her use of language. And No obvious spell-check errors ! this book was proofed by someone besides a machine.A real treat. When James Asher's daughter is kidnapped by a Master Vampire, the stakes could not be higher. When James Asher and his wife Lydia's baby daughter Miranda is kidnapped by the Master Vampire of London, the stakes are high: blindly follow the Master Vampire's instructions, keep out of the way of the human networks that serves the vampires, destroy the interloper who seeks to seize control of the London Nest, and find the key to the Nest's tortuous inner workings: The Book of the Kindred of Darkness.Even with the vampire Don Simon Ysidro on their side, there's no guarantee that anything - or anyone - is who or what they appear to be. Nor is there any certainty that they'll see their child again - or survive the experience themselves. From BooklistEngland, 1913. James Asher, linguistics professor and former intelligence operative, is in Venice, at a conference. Back home, strange doings are afoot: the Ashersrsquo; baby girl is kidnapped by Grippen, the leader of Londonrsquo;s vampires, who wants Lydia Asher to do a job for him: find an out-of-town vampire whorsquo;s been nosing around Grippenrsquo;s territory. And Grippen, whorsquo;s a pretty powerful bloodsucker, has reason to be worried about Zahorec, the newcomer: Zahorec is looking for the famed Book of the Kindred Darkness, which supposedly bestows on its possessor virtually limitless power over other vampires, although some people believe the book doesnrsquo;t actually exist. Hambly gives us a good look at Lydia Asher here, positioning her as a strong, resourceful lead character (although James does eventually put in an appearance, about a third of the way into the book). Another fine entry in this always-entertaining series. --David Pitt "Carefully constructed and lavishly detailed world" (Kirkus s)ldquo;Hamblyrsquo;s clever, driven characters are creatures of action, and will satisfy those who enjoy a well-articulated, heart-pounding mystery.rdquo; (Publishers Weekly Starred )ldquo;Another fine entry in this always-entertaining seriesrdquo; (Booklist)ldquo;Hambly imbues this historical horror novel with plenty of thrills and authentic historical details for a satisfying entry in the seriesrdquo; (Library Journal)About the AuthorBarbara Hambly holds a degree in medieval history from the University of California and has written novels in many genres, from mysteries to science fiction and fantasy.
