From the Editor

Welcome to the November edition and thanks to Jenna Wheatman for her latest Pro-Am Sports bulletin, and to Sean Kelly and Carina Pelucci for their very interesting Mini Biographies. As far as this feature is concerned, you will have noticed that I have started doubling up, so that even more club members can share their history – however recent and their ambitions. Since the last edition, club members have greatly increased the recorded Road Race data. I have done my best to record every performance in ranking order and personal best. Please let me know if you spot any typos or performance omissions.

Present: Ralph Broadley, Harry Forkin, Sharon Houghton, Melanie Padgham, Mick Thompson, Chris Wade, Shaun Tymon

Apologies for absence: Tony Tomaszewicz

Correspondence: None

Minutes of last meeting and matters arising:

Rob Russell is now coaching with the club. Subsidy of transport to races will be decided event by event. Drainage for the long jump area will be improved.

Finance report: No report as Tony Tomaszewicz not present.

Social events: Christmas event is to be set up.

Junior section issues:

Chris Wade reported that coached sessions are continuing successfully. Average attendance is 20/25 on Tuesdays and 15/18 on Wednesdays. Around 20 people are on a waiting list for Sharon's session.

McCains 10k and fun run:

All local schools have been informed about the fun run. Online entry is a available. The Alzheimers Society was suggested as a charity to be supported via this year's 10k. A request for a late entry to the 10k had been received. This was declined as any available places are allocated on chronological basis of entry being received, and the predicted pace of an entrant does not give priority in allocation of places.

A.O.B.: A discussion is being sought with Scarborough Technical College regarding hosting Monday evening runs at their Filey Road site.

A request from Anna Kolos for funding of a Level 2 coaching course was approved.

The equipment container will need to be moved from the Pindar site. The rugby club are willing to accommodate one. The AGM date will be October 26, 2017.

Date of next committee meeting: To be decided.

Annual General Meeting. Scarborough Rugby Club. 26 October 2017

32 members of Scarborough Athletic Club were present.

The meeting was opened at 8.30 pm by Harry Forkin (Club Chairman).

Apologies for Absence:

Apologies for absence were recorded for D. Hearn, D. Field and S. Field.

Chairman's Report:

Harry Forkin presented his Chairman's Report, and gave notice of his intention to step down from the position of Club Chairman in one year.

“In April we heard of the loss of Ted Kraft. He was an outstanding member of the Club and in his 13 years as a Member competed at all levels from cross-country, track and even World Masters Mountain running Championships. First of all, I would like to cover the events that we have put on during the year.

I am proud to once again be able to give a Chairman’s Report of another successful year of Scarborough Athletic Club’s achievements.

1. In May the Awards night was hosted at the Bowls Centre. I would like to emphasise the Contribution to Club element. Lisa Bourne with the Richard Stone Trophy, Sue Lawal Coach of the Year before retiring and Lynn Clegg for her work on achieving United Kingdom Clubmark Accreditation for the Club recognising that we are a safe, rewarding and fulfilling place for members of all ages.

2. The Scalby Fair in May had a record number of 104 runners and Chris Brown 1st male and Hester Butterworth 1st lady with Ben Cross winning the 1 mile Fun Run in 6 min 3 secs.

3. EYXC saw the Women’s Team coming 2nd after winning at Langdale End and the men finishing 5th in the league. We have nearly 90 registered for this year’s competition, so here is hoping for better

4. Summer Handicaps were a great success and thanks to Dave Park, Margaret and Neil Scruton and all the Marshalls. Around 80 people gathered at the Rugby Club for a very entertaining night with all groups getting a share of all the prizes. I still don’t know how Ralph Broadley finished up in between the Trown sisters and Sharon Corden was bumped out.

5. Valued members Chris and Julie Clayton left our Club and shores leaving the 10k in good shape for Mel and Mike to take over.

6. In the junior section U-13 girls Issy Nichols was the NYSD XC League Champion and both she and Emma Clapton won categories at the Scarborough Borough Awards. In June we finally got our wishes of a long jump facility with a 40 metre sythentic track and the wettest summer for years!! We will have the extra drainage installed for the spring. Thanks to Phil Markham for guiding us through planning permission.

I would like to comment on the Clubs ability to provide safe and interesting runs for our Senior Members and juniors. The Club is investing heavily in training coaches and assistant coaches and Run Leaders. The Club has entered the Northern Athletics League and as a requirement we have to have qualified officials. We need track judges, time keepers, and field judges. If you can help can you let team Captain Jenna Wheatman know, and we can source training.

The number of events that we put coaches on for has nearly doubled in the last year. This has greatly assisted participation by all groups in targeting races and raising the profile of SAC. The fact that these coaches are full makes it self-funding to a great degree. The committee will monitor this phenomenon to ensure it stays that way. Loftus Poultry Run had a 52-seater and won all the wine for fancy dress, we also had prizes for running as well. Same is happening this year. As an aside Your Chairman has had a fancy dress made for him and I hope it’s not a dress!! York Marathon fielded 32 Marathon runners and 20 10 milers. David Field and Marathon Group are making plans to take Marathon runners and relay teams to Manchester as a take-over, you all know what happened last time Yorkshire did that.

The Monday night nomads are still exploring other options with assistance of Matt Hewison, keep your eye on Facebook and Web site . Last, but definitely not least, all Scarborough Athletic Club deserve a massive pat on the back, group hug or whatever floats your boat for the performance at the 10k on Sunday. Hats off to Melanie in organising the legions to achieve a great result. Special mention to the work behind the scenes as entries man Glen Shelton for getting to the start line with 2 mins to spare and getting a pb at that. Well done to all. “

Finance Report:

Tony Tomaszewicz (club treasurer) presented the club's annual accounts. Acceptance of these was proposed by Chris Wade and seconded by Ralph Broadley and agreed by the meeting.

Minutes of Last Annual General Meeting:

The minutes of the last Annual General Meeting were presented and accepted.

Election of Trustees: The current committee stood down and re-election of all committee members to their current positions was proposed by Jane Hamp and seconded by Danny Walls.

Proposals received from membership:

That Sean Kelly be accepted as on officer of the club and join the committee. Proposed by Rhona Marshall. Seconded by Lisa Bourne . This proposal was accepted by vote of those present with no votes against. Sean Kelly will therefore join the committee with immediate effect.

A suggestion from Dave Parke regarding club members meeting before training runs on a regular basis was not discussed as a proposal but will be considered by the committee.

The meeting closed at 8.58 pm.

Pro - Am Sports Injury Clinic Jenna Wheatman BSc ( Hons ) MSST Pilates for strength and injury prevention

Last month we covered yoga, this month we will go into Pilates. You may see a lot of similar exercises that cross over and the differences will be discussed to help you choose which class to go to.

What is Pilates? Pilates is a complete body work out which builds and focus's on core strength, as well as improve stamina and mobility through low impact conditioning exercises. It can help to restore body balance from the stresses and strains of modern day life, like prolonged posture or repetitive actions.

Pilates was invented in the early 20th century as a method of body rehabilitation and strengthening.

How does Pilates differ to Yoga? This is a good question as I see many similarities and the goals of improving strength, mobility, control and endurance are the same. Both can focus in on certain areas of the body and offer a challenging sweaty experience or a gentle relaxing workout.

In my experience Pilates focuses on the core of the body and toning your body, balancing both flexibility and strength, movements and positions are more structured and separate. Pilates will make use of many pieces of equipment like exercise bands and hoops. Yoga covers broader muscle groups with more emphasis on poses that flow from one to the next with focus on how it feels. Pilates although it combines mind, body and spirit it does not have the depth of mindfulness that yoga can go into. The breathing differs a lot between between the two types of exercise. Pilates the breath provides the muscles with energy, in Yoga the breath helps you achieve relaxation. Yoga will help you achieve more flexibility by holding static postures, Pilates is more dynamic and although most classes include stretches after the class, it is not its main focus.

How do you choose which class to do? Try both and see which you prefer. The instructor can make a massive difference to which you enjoy as well. Think of your goals, if it is strength then Pilates may be best, it can give quicker results as it can be more intense. If you are looking for more flexibility and stress relief then Yoga may be more beneficial.

For me I do more Yoga as I already do weightlifting for my sport so I feel Yoga gives me more of a time out from high impact strength work giving me more relaxation exercises. If you are not into weights and have never done strength training then Pilates is a great alternative and/or starting point.

What you may find now is there are a lot of classes which combine Yoga with Pilates.

If you want to give it a try you can look for local classes or have a one 2 one. There are beginner classes available on the likes of YouTube (links below) to get a taster of both Pilates and Yoga but a one 2 one is best to learn and get a program designed for your needs.

Which ever you choose both will help enhance your sport and prevent injury by keeping your body balanced. Here are some good links to get you started in Pilates

Mini Biography

Carina Pelucci

Years as a runner; Like most people, I started running as a child! It seemed I was pretty good at it and won most of my races in Primary School but it wasn't until I attended King Henry VIII secondary school in Gwent, that my talent was noticed. The PE teachers said the school couldn’t meet my ability and recommended my parents arrange for me to join a local running club (Torfaen AC). Running took over my young life. If I wasn’t training, I was competing, but I loved it and somehow I managed to navigate my teenage years with little adolescent angst! From what I remember, it was great being a junior member of Torfaen AC, pretty much the same as ours. I even met my first boyfriend there. My coach picked me up for training sessions and races; provided hot soup and tea at the cross country meets. I suppose I owe him and his wife quite a lot whose names, I regret to say, I have forgotten,

In my young running career, I hated cross country but participated because I was told I had to (in the days when, as a minor, you didn't question it!) I did love however, track and field events, 100m, 200m, 400m, and 800m. This was more my style and yes believe it or not I was quite tiny back then. I also took part in the High Jump, Discus and Shot.

Best performance; My most likely best performance, to date, is completing my first ever marathon, the Yorkshire Marathon, in 5:32:32. However, I was pretty chuffed to get sub 60 in the 2016 Scarborough 10k with a new PB of 55:34; greatly surpassing my expectations (thanks to the perseverance of Chris, Julie, Sue, Rhona and several others who made me run faster on those Thursday nights!) Or is it, at 15 years old, competing for my county, Gwent, in XC? it's difficult to say. Suffice to say, at my age now, the fact that I have not only continued to run, I am, in the loosest of terms, racing again!

Favourite race; The GNR 2016 (a good year it seems), what a buzz that was! To be honest, anyone who knows me, is acutely aware that I'm happy running anything – as long as I finish – preferably in the company of others who can run and chat simultaneously!

Favourite female athlete; Paula Radcliffe (it's a shame she is often remembered for disgracing herself during the London Marathon when she still holds the record of 2:15: 25 ). Watching Dame Kelly Holmes run in the Olympics was always very exhilarating, entertaining and a not to be missed, race!

Favourite male athlete; Back in the 80s, as a young athlete, I marveled at the performances of Seb Coe, Steve Ovett and Steve Cram. However more recently, Ben Smith is an inspiration; ranked high due to his commitment to raising awareness of issues surrounding bullying through his amazing running ability!

Targets; I used to have the ambition to run a marathon by the time I was 50 years old. Well I have completed a marathon or as I prefer to call it, my 'Dummy run'. I still haven't run the whole thing yet, so I suspect that will be one of my future targets. I definitely intend giving fell running a go because unbelievably, despite what I said earlier, I actually really like, almost prefer the off road runs. That's a promise, David Parke!

Funny moments; I am sure there have been several funny moments, but one that still makes me chuckle happened on my arrival to the 2nd winter Handicap race this year. I was greeted by my good friends, Ryan Sheader and Sarah Casey, inviting me to join their team. Hmm I thought...what's the catch? According to 'my friends', in order for us to stand any chance, it was necessary for the 3rd member to be slower, (not bothered about hurting my feelings, I jest) I could do that justice and said yes. What's our team called you may ask? 'Is Carina here yet?' Charming! Now that was a good race! I like to think I am a positive role model to others. I am especially proud of our daughter Emily. Who first ran for the SAC juniors and now later, as an adult. All those times I watched, freezing cold, supporting her at the NYSDs, I never would have imagined running our first marathon together, let alone Drewton Woods. Our first XC run as mother and daughter!

I have a favourite saying, 'Fresh air and exercise cures most things,' of which I get from running. Physically, I can eat what I like and maintain a reasonable weight whilst keeping fit. Mentally, running has helped me in so many ways; building confidence, resilience, drive and it reduces stress; putting me in good stead. I love meeting new people and never tire of the incessant chatter. I am definitely a social runner, so I suppose most of all, it helps to make a friend which isn’t difficult when you are a member of Scarborough Athletic Club, which I am very happy about!

Mini Biography

Sean Kelly

Years as a runner; My running history is like most of us a story of rediscovery. In my school years I was an exceptionally good XC runner and never finished out of the top 3 for 3 seasons. I went on to represent Scarborough schools at various races and one 2 occasions the county. A dodgy knee curtailed my running during my final year at school. Although always active I took a break from running of 26 years.

Favourite race; In 2008 my son was seriously ill (leukaemia). To say life was turned upside down is a minor understatement. My wife Julie decamped to Leeds to be at his bedside, I had my daughter to look after and a business to run. I used to play football once a week, that and any other sporting activity stopped. He survived but we met lots of young people who didn’t. In 2010 with 4 weeks’ notice Julie 'told' me to enter the 10k. She knew I needed a bit of focus. So I did a bit of training, ran it comfortably in about 55 minutes, raised over £800 for the Teenage Cancer Trust and felt rather pleased with myself. My nephew had gone down to watch me run and was looking forward to seeing me struggle so he could laugh at me. His reaction though on the day started my running journey. He suggested we do the Great North Run the following year. I am now a veteran of 7 GNRS's my first I managed a 1.55.54 this year was 1.27.51.

I still class myself as a relative newcomer to running and I'm still learning. Initially I did not want to join a club or group, I thought running was a sport to enjoy, and not be competitive in. Giulia Wilkins was always nagging at me to join the SAC, I kept refusing, she was insistent that not only would I be one of its better runners she told me that the club would make me better still. Eventually I succumbed and joined, she was right! She did not mention though the fabulous friendships I'd build nor the future opportunities that lay ahead.

Best performance; Through my sons illness I have forged a strong bond with the Teenage Cancer Trust and everyone who knows me recognises this. I have raised over £20'000 for them and shall continue to do so. My favourite event is the GNR, I pledged I'll run that race until the day I pass away for the TCT. Two years ago they contacted me and asked me to take on the London Marathon, like a fool I said yes. I ran it in 2016 in 3.17, & in truth was disappointed with the event, the time and myself. I was honoured to gain the club place in 2017 and rocked in with a 3.10, on that day I was delighted with everything. I'd trained well, prepared better and understood the complexity of the event.

Ambitions; I’ve qualified with a GFA next year and am setting myself a big target. This year I'm heading up the TEAMLEGEND campaign as we are the principal charity for the Virgin London Marathon 2018. We are still recruiting cheer squads if you want to get involved.? You can see my image all over the place and bits of recorded video and radio sound bites. We were blessed as Joe survived but the indelible mark that experience left on me drives me to help others.

Myother ambitions in 2018 are to improve my UK rankings. Gaining PB's may become increasingly difficult as I get a bit older, however I'll look to improve on my 10 mile, 1/2 and full marathon times. I still intend to keep mud of my trainers by not doing XC and I've still not done a park run.

As I said I still see myself as a newcomer however it is clear the club see something else. This year I was privileged to be asked to take on extra responsibilities with regarding run leading and joining the committee and becoming a trustee of the club. I hope my presence at the club can have a positive effect on others.

Favourite male and female athletes; I used to love watching Coe & Ovett in the early 80's. Denise Lewis and Kelly Holmes were my favourite female athletes. I used to love watching all the big sporting events on TV so was thrilled when I got tickets for the Olympics in London. Me, Julie, Joe & Siân went to London we saw Ussain Bolt win his heats in the 200 metres! My favourite London memory was 2 days later we were in Hyde Park and everything stopped to watch the 200 metres final. We were sat watching a band play, they walked off the stage so they could see the big screen, the burger vans, bars, stalls all stopped, everyone wanted to see Bolt. That's what sport does, it brings people together and it's not bad for your health either!
