From the Desk of the President Fellow Rangers: Since May 2015, the Association has been busy commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1st and 2nd Battalions’ participation in the Vietnam War. That commemoration will continue until April 2020, the 50th anniversary of the departure of our two battalions from that conflict. Since last spring, we have also commemorated the Regiment's participation in World War I and will continue that effort until September 2019, the 100th anniversary of the 16th Infantry's return from its occupation duties in Germany. The Regiment's participation in both of these wars have added celebrated chapters to our Regiment's noble history and 18 campaign streamers to our colors. It is with great pride that we continue to recognize the achievements and sacrifices of our forebears of the Great War as well as those of our current Vietnam veterans. This year, the Association will Steve Clay participate in a number of events which will also celebrate our Regiment, its members, and its his- tory. I encourage you all to attend when possible. The first of these will be the change of command for the 1st Battalion at Fort Riley. On 2 March 2018, our current commander, LTC Jon Meredith, will hand over the colors to LTC Drew Conover. Our Honorary Colonel, Ralph Kauzlarich, will conduct the 2018 investiture ceremonies for our new DMORs at Fort Riley or the annual reunion (TBD). The reunion of the Society of the 1st Infantry Division will take place at the Westin Lombard in Lombard, IL, 1-5 August 2018. Finally, a small commemoration party from the Association plans to attend the 100th Anniversary of the Regiment’s liberation of Fléville in France this fall. More to follow on this event. Semper Paratus! Always Ready! Steven E. Clay President Dagwood Dispatches 2 January 2018 From the Desk of the Honorary Colonel Greetings Fellow Rangers, Happy New Year’s 16th Infantry Regiment! I trust this note finds each of you in good health and spirits as the year of 2018 is now upon us. This year will prove to be one of the best for our Regiment. There’s a lot of planned activities and opportunities to rendezvous and celebrate our years of previous service in the Regiment. At the same time, we’ll continue to rally around the 1st Battalion, Iron Rangers, as they continue to refit and train for their next mission after a very successful deployment to the Korean Peninsula this past year. Both the Association President, Steve Clay, and my Honorary Sergeant Major, Tom Pendleton, are receiving Class of 2018 nominations for both Distinguished and Honorary Ralph Kauzlarich Members of the Regiment. They will package all nominations and send them to me on 1 February for review and my recommendation for approval to the 1st Infantry Division’s Commanding General. Our selected Distinguished and Honorary Members of the Regiment’s names will then go forward to the Chief of Infantry at Fort Benning, Georgia for his concurrence. Any DMOR can nominate a worthy individual for either distinction; the nomination just needs to be accomplished by 31 January 2018 for the impending selection process. The Class of 2018 Distinguished and Honorary Members of the Regiment’s Investiture Ceremony will occur either at the 1st Infantry Division’s Reunion that will take place at the Westin Lombard Hotel, Yorktown Center Lombard, Illinois, 1-5 August 2018, or at Fort Riley this summer on a date/time yet to be determined. Details will be forthcoming early in the new year. Please plan to be at the Investiture to celebrate our newest inductees with us. In closing, the Honorary Sergeant Major and I want to thank each of you for your continued support to the DMOR/HMOR Program and to our 16th Infantry Regiment Association. Our energies as a Regimental Association to take care of our active duty Iron Rangers, their Families, and our Veterans have an impact that is often life changing. I continue to challenge each of you to reach out to a Ranger comrade that you have not talked to as of late and bring them back into the 16th Infantry Regiment fold. We must strive to take better care of one another at the grassroots level and make a positive difference. Thank you all for your service to the Regiment, the Association, and our Veterans. God bless each of you and your Families throughout this New Year. Semper Paratus!!! Ralph L. Kauzlarich Colonel, U.S. Army (Retired) Seventh Honorary Colonel Honorary Member of the Regiment Nancy Dignan, wife of DMOR Don Dignan, was inducted as a 16th Infantry Honorary Member of the Regiment in September 2017 at the 27th Reunion of D/2-16 Vietnam Veterans (1969-70) in Chapin, SC. Presenting was LTC (R) Ron Saxton, D/2-16 Commander, Feb-Sep 1968. Nancy has demonstrated continued and conscientious support to D/2-16 by helping with the coordination of 26 Delta Company reunions around the US. This work included mailings to all unit members and as well as hosting two of the unit reunions. Nancy has also assisted Don in reaching out to spouses and family members of D/2-16 and acting as the Delta Company Vietnam Veterans unofficial family support group lead. In this capacity Nancy has been a contact for families as they sought comfort with issues from combat service and in other areas.
