Phillips to Display Tatlin's Model for the Monument for the Third PRESS RELEASE Phillips to Display Tatlin’s Model for the Monument for the Third International in the Park Avenue Cube Monumental Work Offered for Private Sale NEW YORK – 23 May 2019 – Phillips is pleased to announce that a reconstruction of Vladimir Tatlin's Model for the Monument for the Third International, a fusion of architecture and sculpture with motorized elements, will be on view in the Park Avenue Cube at 432 Park Avenue from 29 May 29 through 12 June. The monumental structure is available for private sale. Celebrating its 100th anniversary, the sculpture commemorating one of the most visionary unbuilt structures of architectural modernism stands over 16 feet high, the same scale as Tatlin’s original model. The dynamic structure is motorized, demonstrating Tatlin’s radical plans to create moving chambers within it. Miety Heiden, Deputy Chairman and Head of Private Sales at Phillips, said: “We are proud to present this extraordinary structure, allowing today’s audiences to experience Tatlin’s visionary design in the Park Avenue Cube, a perfect setting for a sculpture of this scale and magnitude. It is a rarely seen creation that deserves to be seen by the wider public – and this is the perfect opportunity.” Alongside Kazimir Malevich, Tatlin was widely considered the most important figure of the Soviet avant-garde of the early part of the twentieth century. Commissioned to create a monument to the Bolshevik Revolution in St. Petersburg, Tatlin conceived of his building as the headquarters for the Third International – the world organization of the Communist party founded in 1919 and intended to spread global revolution. Tatlin’s radical proposal was for a towering structure in steel and glass with the unprecedented height of 1,300 feet – a third taller than the Eiffel Tower. The dynamic forms that Tatlin envisioned for The Monument are anchored by a thrusting diagonal girder around which two spiraling forms wind upwards. Within the steel frame, Tatlin designed four tiers of glass-walled structures that would rotate at different speeds. Lowest was a cylindrical chamber that would house the legislature and revolve once a year; above it was a slanted pyramid designed to hold the government’s executive branch and rotate once a month. Third highest was a smaller cylinder that turned once a day and would house the press bureau; this, in turn, is surmounted by a hemisphere that would rotate hourly and was conceived to contain a radio station and an apparatus for projecting slogans into the sky. The structure on exhibition at Phillips is a careful reconstruction of Tatlin’s Monument executed in 1967 and 1968 under the supervision of Museum Director Pontus Hultén, who would go on to become the founding director of the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. This model was shown in 1968-1969 as part of the Museum of Modern Art’s landmark The Machine at the End of the Mechanical Age exhibition, which united Modernist innovations with contemporary electronic and kinetic works. Placed in MoMA’s sculpture garden during the exhibition, it was also shown the following year at the 1970 Venice Biennale. The demand still far exceeds supply especially for 5 star brands. Early in the hotel recovery in 2011, three star brands grew in number of rooms and ADR initially. As the recovery went into full swing by late 2013, four and five star hotel development continued to outpace three star hotel growth. Global investors are seeking five star hotel product in Manhattan and at $1.0 million up to $2.0 million per key. For instance, Chinese investors bought the Waldorf Astoria and the Baccarat Hotels both at substantially above $1.0 million per key. Manhattan is one of the best hotel markets in the world between growing tourism and inexpensive accommodations compared to other global gateway cities like London, Paris, Moscow, Hong Kong, etc. Any established global hotel brand also requires a presence in Manhattan. In 2014 alone, 4,348 keys were added to Manhattan’s existing 108,592 rooms. Currently, another 14,272 rooms are under construction in the city and about 4000 keys (1/3) are for boutique hotels. As of July 2015, the Manhattan market has approximately 118,000 keys. They are segmented as follows: Currently, there is a 4.0% annual compounded growth rate. Despite this growth, demand for hotel rooms from tourism, conventions, cultural events, and corporate use continues to grow as Manhattan is one of the most desirable locations for all of the above uses especially tourism from Asia and Europe.

Urban Design and Visual Resources 7.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter assesses the Proposed Action’s potential effects on urban design and visual resources. As described in Chapter 1, “Project Description,” the Proposed Action involves zoning map and zoning text amendments that would affect an approximately 70-block area in the East Midtown area of Manhattan for the purpose of protecting and strengthening the area as a premier office district, as well as improving the area’s pedestrian and built environment. The Proposed Action is intended to encourage limited and targeted as-of-right commercial development in appropriate locations by establishing an East Midtown Subdistrict within the Special Midtown District. The East Midtown Subdistrict would supersede and subsume the existing Grand Central Subdistrict, focusing new commercial development with the greatest as-of-right densities on large sites with full block frontage on avenues around Grand Central Terminal, with slightly lower densities allowed along the Park Avenue corridor and elsewhere. The zoning text amendment would also streamline the system for landmark transfers within the Grand Central Subarea of the East Midtown Subdistrict and generate funding for area-wide pedestrian network improvements. The zoning map amendments would replace the existing C5-2 designation in the midblock area between East 42nd and East 43rd Streets, from Second Avenue to Third Avenue, with C5-3 and C5-2.5 designations, which would be mapped within the Special Midtown District and East Midtown Subdistrict. Subject to further analysis and public consultation, the Proposed Action may also amend the City Map to reflect a “Public Place” designation over portions of Vanderbilt Avenue to allow for the permanent development of a partially pedestrianized street.

    Constructivism (art) 1 Constructivism (art) Constructivism was an artistic and architectural philosophy that originated in Russia beginning 1919, which was a rejection of the idea of autonomous art in favour of art as a practice for social purposes. Constructivism as an active philosophy lasted until about 1934, greatly effecting the art of the Weimar Republic and elsewhere, before being replaced by Socialist Realism. Some of its motifs have been reused sporadically since. Beginnings The term Construction Art was first used as a derisive term by Kazimir Malevich to describe the work of Alexander Rodchenko during 1917. Constructivism first appears as a positive term in Naum Gabo's Realistic Manifesto of 1920. Alexei Gan used the word as the title of his book Constructivism, which was printed during 1922.[1] Constructivism was a post-World War I development of Russian Futurism, and particularly of the 'corner-counter reliefs' of Vladimir Tatlin, which had been exhibited during 1915. The term itself would be invented by the sculptors Antoine Pevsner and Naum Photograph of the first Constructivist Exhibition, 1921 Gabo, who developed an industrial, angular style of work, while its geometric abstraction owed something to the Suprematism of Kasimir Malevich. The teaching basis for the new ohilosophy was established by The Commissariat of Enlightenment (or Narkompros) the Bolshevik government's cultural and educational ministry directed by Anatoliy Vasilievich Lunacharsky who suppressed the old Petrograd Academy of Fine Arts and the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture during 1918. IZO, the Commissariat's artistic bureau, was managed during the Russian Civil War mainly by Futurists, who published the journal Art of the Commune.

    PRESS RELEASE Basel, April 2012 Tatlin. new art for a new world Museum Tinguely, Basel: 6 June – 14 October 2012 This year the Museum Tinguely in Basel is dedicating its large summer exhibition to one of the most important figures of the Russian avant- garde: Vladimir Tatlin (1885–1953). It is now almost twenty years since the last comprehen- sive retrospective to be devoted to this radically innovative artist. The presented works will include early paintings, counter-reliefs that reach out into the surrounding space, reconstructions of his revolutionary tower, and Unknown photographer, Presentation of Vladimir Tatlin’s Letatlin the flying machine Letatlin. The exhibition is at a glider show, in Moscow, 1933, State Tretyakov-Gallery, Moscow rounded off with examples of his work for the theatre. The œuvre of this outstanding artist from the watershed period at the beginning of the twentieth century will be represented in over one hundred masterpieces, mostly on loan from major collections in Moscow and St Petersburg. Vladimir Tatlin began his career as a seaman. Until 1913 his artistic activities were limited exclusively to painting and drawing. Interested in the traditional fields of icon-painting and folk art, he later transferred his attention to the most modern avant-garde trends in Russia and Western Europe, more precisely Paris. His entire later work is founded on painting. The exhibition will show a comprehensive selection of his early paintings with their bold expanses of colour, rhythmic curves, and striking use of dark and light outlines. In these eye-catching works Tatlin achieved a highly original synthesis of the Russian tradition and the French avant-garde.
