Google Home: Before setting up your Chromecast please find your device’s wireless MAC address. If you already have the MAC address, then you can skip this video and register your device with the My Devices Portal. If you are unsure you can watch the video on registering a device with the portal. After your device is registered, connect to the UMassLowell network. To find the MAC address of a Google Home please have a mobile device like a smartphone or tablet ready and, follow these steps: 1. Download and install the Google Home app onto your Mobile Device. 2. From the Google Home app, you should see your Google Home listed. 3. Select your google home and press set up. 4. Accept the prompt to connect to your Google Home. 5. Answer the setup questions. 6. Enter the location of your Google Home and press continue. 7. The Wireless MAC can be found to the bottom right of the Screen. 8. Write down the combination of letters and numbers exactly for reference later. Once you have the MAC address of your Google Home, as stated above; register it with the My Devices Portal. If you are unsure how to do this, please watch our video on registering a device. Once you finish registration, connect to the UMassLowell network and finish wireless setup. Chromebooks + Chromecast in the Classroom
CHROMEBOOKS + CHROMECAST IN THE CLASSROOM As more Chromebook™ models enter the market, it’s becoming harder for schools to choose the best one to meet their needs. Which one has the power to run the latest online educational content such as Kno™ online textbooks and BioDigital Human™? Which one offers the best visual experience when using Chromecast™ in the classroom? Each model delivers a different experience for teachers teaching and students learning in the classroom. Here in the Principled Technologies labs, we put on our teacher hats and looked at an Intel® Core™ i3 processor-powered Chromebook and an ARM® processor-based Chromebook. We performed tasks a science teacher might include while giving a lesson in the classroom, such as using a Kno online textbook and looking at different 3D anatomy models in BioDigital Human. We measured aspects of user experience that would matter to students and teachers—time to complete tasks and frame rate. Which Chromebook is the better choice for teaching in the classroom? We found that the Intel Core i3 processor-powered Chromebook outperformed the ARM processor-based Chromebook across the board, delivering up to 250.0 percent more frames per second than the ARM processor-based Chromebook when using BioDigital Human with Chromecast. The Intel Core i3 processor-powered Chromebook also took just over half the time to complete a series of tasks, including opening BioDigital Human over 22 seconds faster than the ARM processor-based Chromebook. Statement of FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION Concerning Google/DoubleClick FTC File No. 071-0170 The Federal Trade Commission has voted 4-11 to close its investigation of Google’s proposed acquisition of DoubleClick after a thorough examination of the evidence bearing on the transaction. The Commission dedicated extensive resources to this investigation because of the importance of the Internet and the role advertising has come to play in the development and maintenance of this rapidly evolving medium of communication.2 Online advertising fuels the diversity and wealth of free information available on the Internet today. Our investigation focused on the impact of this transaction on competition in the online advertising marketplace. The investigation was conducted pursuant to the Commission’s statutory authority under the Clayton Act to review mergers and acquisitions. If this investigation had given the Commission reason to believe that the transaction was likely to harm competition and injure consumers, the Commission could have filed a federal court action seeking to enjoin the transaction under Section13(b) of the Federal Trade Commission Act (“FTC Act”) and Section 15 of the Clayton Act. The standard used by the Commission to review mergers and acquisitions is set forth in Section 7 of the Clayton Act. That statute prohibits acquisitions or mergers, the effect of which “may be substantially to lessen competition, or to tend to create a monopoly.” The Commission can apply Section 7 (as well as Section 1 of the Sherman Act and Section 5 of the FTC Act) to challenge transactions that threaten to create, enhance, or facilitate the exercise of market power.
