Docklands maritime history was recognised last month, with the Mission to Seafarers' heritage collection found to have state and national signifi cance.

Th e collection consists of thousands of items, including letters, documents and photographs. Th e seafarers pictured left are just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to the mission’s vast and intriguing history. Th ey were the crew of the SS Siltonhall and took refuge at the mission in September of 1929 after their ship caught fi re and was abandoned in the Indian Ocean. An art exhibition celebrating the historic Alma Doepel will be held in Docklands this month.

“Th e Art of Alma,” will feature the work of eight diff erent artists, depicting the 1903 topsail schooner in its various incarnations, including its restoration at Shed 2 at Docklands. Th e exhibition, to be held at the Docklands Ocean Education Centre at Shed 2, has been curated by artist Maggie Cowling, who has been a regular fi xture at the restoration site Dog Name: Gary over the past few years. Yarra’s Edge local Michelle Commandeur says Docklands is “full of colourful characters”.

Living and working in Docklands, Michelle has plenty of time to observe what’s happening in the area. A cartoonist who has recently returned to her craft, Michelle said she liked to point out some of the quirky things about life in her work. “Th ere are a lot of things around here that people who live or work in Docklands might relate to,” Michelle said. Many of these she captures in her “Docklands Daze” cartoons, which are published in Docklands News. Michelle said she had loved drawing since she was a child and had done some cartooning when she was younger before becoming distracted by everyday life. Around a year and a half ago Michelle took some time off work while unwell and it was then that she rediscovered her love of cartooning and illustration. “One of the lessons I learnt from being unwell was that life’s too short not to do what you really like doing, so I’ve been determined not to let it go again,” she said. Having now returned to her ANZ job part- time, Michelle has devoted the rest of her time to pursuing cartooning and illustration. Dragon boaters from throughout the state converged on Victoria Harbour on April 6 to compete in the Victorian Dragon Boat Championships.
