LAS Specification Version 1.2 Approved by ASPRS Board 09/02/2008 LAS 1.2 1 LAS FORMAT VERSION 1.2: This document reflects the second revision of the LAS format specification since its initial version 1.0 release. Version 1.2 retains the same structure as version 1.1 including identical field alignment. LAS 1.1 file Input/Output (I/O) libraries will require slight modifications in order to be compliant with this revision. A LAS 1.1 Reader will read LAS 1.2 (without the new enhancements) with no modifications. A detailed change document that provides both an overview of the changes in the specification as well as the motivation behind each change is available from the ASPRS website in the LIDAR committee section. The additions of LAS 1.2 include: • GPS Absolute Time (as well as GPS Week Time) – LAS 1.0 and LAS 1.1 specified GPS “Week Time” only. This meant that GPS time stamps “rolled over” at midnight on Saturday. This makes processing of LIDAR flight lines that span the time reset difficult. LAS 1.2 allows both GPS Week Time and Absolute GPS Time (POSIX) stamps to be used. • Support for ancillary image data on a per point basis. You can now specify Red, Green, Blue image data on a point by point basis. This is encapsulated in two new point record types (type 2 and type 3). The sauce here is to make use of the wget module. First, install the module into the environment. The wget module is pretty straight-forward, only one function to access, wget.download() . Let say we want to download this file http://download.geonames.org/export/zip/US.zip, the implementation will be following: The output will look like this: As you can see, it prints out the progress bar for us to know the progress of downloading, with current bytes retrieved with total bytes. The s econd parameter is to set output filename or directory for output file. There is another parameter, bar=callback(current, total, width=80) . This is to define how the progress bar is rendered to output screen. Canonical specification. The Basic Principles of Data Compression Author: Conrad Chung, 2BrightSparks Introduction Internet users who download or upload files from/to the web, or use email to send or receive attachments will most likely have encountered files in compressed format. In this topic we will cover how compression works, the advantages and disadvantages of compression, as well as types of compression. What is Compression? Compression is the process of encoding data more efficiently to achieve a reduction in file size. One type of compression available is referred to as lossless compression. This means the compressed file will be restored exactly to its original state with no loss of data during the decompression process. This is essential to data compression as the file would be corrupted and unusable should data be lost. Another compression category which will not be covered in this article is “lossy” compression often used in multimedia files for music and images and where data is discarded. Lossless compression algorithms use statistic modeling techniques to reduce repetitive information in a file. Some of the methods may include removal of spacing characters, representing a string of repeated characters with a single character or replacing recurring characters with smaller bit sequences. Advantages/Disadvantages of Compression Compression of files offer many advantages. When compressed, the quantity of bits used to store the information is reduced. Files that are smaller in size will result in shorter transmission times when they are transferred on the Internet. Compressed files also take up less storage space. File compression can zip up several small files into a single file for more convenient email transmission. -

Users will also learn how to deal with minor imperfections in their images. Note: The GIMP cannot handle FITS files effectively, so to produce a color image, users will have needed to process FITS files and saved them as grayscale TIFF or JPEG files as outlined in the Basic Imaging section. Separately filtered FITS files are available for you to use on the Color Imaging page. The GIMP can be downloaded for Windows, Mac, and Linux from: www.gimp.org Loading Images Loading TIFF/JPEG Files Users will be processing three separate images to make the RGB color images. When opening files in The GIMP, you can select multiple files at once by holding the Ctrl button and clicking on the TIFF or JPEG files you wish to use to make a color image. Go to File > Open. Image Mode RGB Mode Because these images are saved as grayscale, all three images need to be converted to RGB. This is because color images are made from (R)ed, (G)reen, and (B)lue picture elements (pixels). The different shades of gray in the image show the intensity of light in each of the wavelengths through the red, green, and blue filters. The colors themselves are not recorded in the image. Adding Color Information For the moment, these images are just grayscale. -
