2018 MiLB Community Report MiLB Community 2018 Dear Friends and Colleagues, Thank you for making 2018 another successful philanthropic year for Minor League Baseball, its 160 teams and MiLB Charities. As we reflect on the accomplishments of last year and look ahead to MiLB Charities’ 15th year of existence in 2019, we have a great deal to be proud of and celebrate. Our dedicated staff in the national office, the commitment from all teams and the overwhelming support of our loyal fans have enabled us to take our charitable giving to new heights. For the fourth consecutive year, all 160 teams reported their charitable giving and contributions to the Minor League Baseball office, allowing us to compile the most accurate total of our combined efforts. I am happy to share that in 2018, MiLB Charities totaled more than $45 million in cash donations and in-kind gifts from MiLB teams and leagues—the largest number to date. Additionally, MiLB and its teams logged over 15,000 total volunteer hours in support of their local communities. | LETTER FROM PAT O’CONNER LETTER FROM PAT Some of the highlights from our numerous programs in 2018 — which you will read more about in this report — include the MiLB CommUNITY Initiative, the “Cover Your Bases” Sun Safety Initiative in partnership with the American Cancer Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters Rising Star Students, Derrick Hall Pro-State Foundation Father’s Day Initiative in conjunction with the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Joe Torre Safe At Home Domestic Violence Awareness Initiative and the BUSH’s Beans “Team Up Against Hunger” Food Drive. Through these and other initiatives, Minor League Baseball and its teams, Charity Partners and national marketing partners have made a lasting and measurable impact in MiLB communities. Our ongoing goal is to continue to expand our outreach while strengthening our programs and services. MiLB Charities is stronger than ever because of everyone who has come together to donate time, resources and talent in support of our important mission: to give back and to enhance communities that have supported our member clubs for over 100 years. A shining example of our collective efforts was the 10th annual MiLB Charities Community Service Project, presented by Musco Sports Lighting, at the Minor League Baseball Promotional Seminar (now known as the MiLB Innovators Summit). More than 150 Promotional Seminar attendees representing MiLB teams from across the country packaged meals for Meals from the Heartland, a Des Moines-based organization that provides packaged meals to the hungry across Iowa, the United States and around the world. As one of the most popular events of the Promotional Seminar, the MiLB Charities Community Service Project has left its mark on Promo Seminar host communities for nearly a decade. I am extremely proud that MiLB personnel choose to give their time in this way, and in the process, build meaningful relationships with one another and organizations in need. I hope, as you read the following pages, you will be both proud of your efforts, and use it as a catalyst to continue to do good work in your community. As I have in the past, I encourage each of you to play an active role in your #MiLBCommUNITY and identify how you can share MiLB Charities’ mission. Sincerely, Pat O’Conner President & CEO Minor League Baseball 2018 MiLB Community Report MiLB Community 2018 MISSION STATEMENT “The mission of Minor League Baseball Charities is to give back to and enhance communities that have supported our member clubs for over 100 years. Through these ongoing efforts, our clubs and leagues have distinguished themselves within their communities and with municipalities, sponsors and fans. The Minor League Baseball Charity Partners program was developed against this backdrop to bring increased awareness to national charities that were engaging with Minor League Baseball on a local level. The 2018 Minor League Baseball Charity Partners were The American Cancer Society, The ALS Association and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Homegrown Charity Partners for 2018 were The BairFind Foundation and | Ed Randall’s Fans for the Cure. BACKGROUND Minor League Baseball operates MiLB Charities, a tax exempt 501(c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with The National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues, Inc. (NAPBL). MiLB Charities is a vehicle through which association-wide efforts can be streamlined in support of charitable causes important to the extended Minor League Baseball family through donations, scholarships and provision of relief when tragedy or hardship occurs in our clubs’ cities and communities. Annually, Minor League Baseball surveys each team and league to measure our industry’s collective level of participation through gift-in-kind and cash donations and events that support various charities in our ballparks. The online reporting portal allows teams and leagues to update their charitable activities throughout the year and upload pictures directly to the site. This information can later be used by individual leagues to produce community benefit reports.
