I know that the sentiments that appear on this page will not fully capture the gratitude I have for the people who contributed in some way to the completion of my dissertation. I also realize that not every person who I met, exchanged emails with, or who entertained me with thoughts on my work, will make it into the acknowledgments, but that does not diminish the role they played in this long and arduous process. In a society that is moving more to digital archives and defunding public archives, their work remains invaluable. Whether an M.A. or Ph.D. student, Jennifer was always there to answer those important questions about scheduling, funding, and pretty much anything else in relation to the inter- departmental workings. Her kind and caring support of every grad student reminded us that no matter how bad things may have seemed, we had an ally to help us manage through. I am grateful for the wonderful support and patience of my committee members. Jim Andrews always expressed a genuine interest in my work and a desire to help me succeed. Bonar Hernández served as my Latin American History fields advisor and always found time to talk through my questions to provide a deeper understanding of the readings. I also enjoyed our frequent discussions about baseball and sharing in the triumphs and struggles of our favorite teams. Kathleen Hilliard has always been a wonderful ally for the graduate students. She advocated on our behalf and was the firm foundation that grad students needed during the years of turnover in the department. Amy Rutenberg was a great addition to Iowa State University, and I am grateful that I had the privilege of being one of her TA’s. She helped me to think more about my approach to teaching, and upon agreeing to serve on my committee, helped move parts of my work in a more scholarly direction. I am grateful for her open and honest feedback she offered whenever I came knocking on her office door. No dissertation is completed without the guidance of an advisor. I was lucky to have Larry McDonnell as the person overseeing my work. I will always cherish our discussions in 615 Ross Hall. Whether they were a few minutes as one of us was packing up, or one of our prearranged longer encounters, every meeting helped me discover more about the potential of my research, and more about myself. He was my most enthusiastic supporter, my harshest critic, and my confidant throughout my pursuit of a Ph.D. He knew when to push me, and he knew when to give me space. She has also sacrificed a lot to allow me to pursue a Ph.D., and I know that I will always remain indebted to her love and support for me as a scholar, an educator, and as her future spouse. vi ABSTRACT Between 1917 and 1947, professional baseball in the United States became politicized under the rule of commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis. He reconstructed the game’s sport- hero ethos to promote civic-minded manhood, forging a powerful bond between the construction of American masculinity and the demands of civic obligations. Landis understood that baseball’s popularity had created idols out of the men who played the game, imbuing the sport’s hero ethos with the power to influence the discourse that defined manhood. He believed that baseball could serve the needs of the nation by inculcating a belief that patriotic actions were at the core of American masculinity. Landis oversaw the expansion of “sportsmanship” as a moral standard in athletics that taught values that were important to building virtuous citizenship. The changes he implemented proved transformative, both on and off the playing field. His work reconstructed sports as an American experience that was vital to sustaining a functioning democracy. While the current scholarship acknowledges baseball’s importance to defining the American experience and as a solution to the “crisis of masculinity,” the two historiographies rarely overlap. This study seeks to explore how Landis used baseball to influence a relationship of reciprocity between sports and the state that helped to grow American nationalism. 1 CHAPTER 1.     After one of the worst starts ever to a baseball career, John J. McGraw became a sports legend as a champion player and manager in the early 20th century. John Joseph McGraw was born in Truxton, Cortland County, on April 7, 1873. His relationship with his father grew strained after John’s mother and four siblings died during an epidemic in the winter of 1884-5. John left home while still in school, where he starred on the baseball team. Obsessed with the game, he spent the money he earned from odd jobs on baseball equipment and rulebooks. In 1890, John decided to make a career of baseball. He started out earning $5 a game for the Truxton Grays. When the Grays’ manager took over the Olean franchise of the New York-Penn League, John became his third baseman. He committed eight Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division [reproduction errors in his rst game with Olean. After six games, he number LC-DIG-ggbain-34093] was cut from the team. McGraw kept trying. He played shortstop for Wellsville in the Western New York League and showed skill as a hitter and baserunner. After the 1890 season, McGraw joined the American All-Stars, a team that toured the southern states and Cuba during the winter. In 1891, a team of All-Stars and Florida players challenged the Cleveland Spiders of the American Association, one of the era’s two major leagues, to a spring-training exhibition game. Cleveland won, but McGraw got three hits in ve at-bats. Coverage of the game in The Sporting News inspired several teams to offer McGraw contracts.

    esley Branch Rickey was born in 1880 and Branch Rickey grew up on a modest farm in southern WOhio. His parents instilled Branch with General Manager, strong Christian values that would remain with him throughout his life. Schooled in a one room St. Louis Cardinals schoolhouse, he taught himself Latin and Greek and went on to attend Ohio Wesleyan University where he played baseball and football. While still in college, he was invited to play professional baseball. Wanting his parents’ approval for his involvement in pro ball, he pledged to them to never go into a baseball stadium on a Sunday, a promise that became a lifetime commitment. After a short stint as a catcher with the St. Louis Browns and New York Highlanders, he went on to complete his law degree at the University of Michigan. After coaching for a short time at Michigan, he spent most of the next ten years managing in the major leagues. It was Branch’s sharp eye for talent that brought him to the business side of baseball, where he would revolutionize the game. As General Manager for the St. Louis Cardinals, Rickey originated the concept of the “farm system”, utilizing minor league farm clubs to develop talent for major league teams. Soon the Cardinals were a National League power and teams everywhere were copying Branch’s system. Thanks to Rickey’s innovation and determination, the Cardinals produced nine pennants and six world championships from 1926 -1947. Later as president and general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Rickey decided that in order for baseball to be truly “the national pastime,” a long tradition of whites-only would have to be broken.
