These awards are particularly important to me because they demonstrate that our Board reflects the communities we serve. We continued to strengthen community ties, sharing the benefits of our growth. This included over $1 million in contributions to a range of organizations such as the Pacific Salmon Foundation, BC Mobility Opportunities Society, Covenant House Vancouver and many more. And we continued to lead the industry in environmental best practices. YVR received the Airports Going Green Award for our efforts to help business partners reduce their impact. We maintained Level 2 Airport Carbon Accreditation with Airports Council International and we retained our Salmon-Safe certification, demonstrating our commitment to restoring, protecting and enhancing our ecosystem. YVR’s new high-speed baggage system became fully operational, moving bags to anywhere in the terminal in under 30 minutes. We launched our Primary Inspection Kiosks, which reduce wait times for passengers at Customs. And we unveiled our Less Airport Stress Initiative (LASI) to much fanfare, giving passengers a chance to interact with friendly ambassador dogs throughout the terminal. We continued to uphold the highest safety standards. In addition to undertaking annual runway and taxiway maintenance, our team completed Runway End Safety Areas (RESAs) on our South and Crosswind Runways. We also made history, completing the largest install of an apron LED lighting system in Canada—improving safety while reducing power consumption. By far, the most memorable highlight of 2017 was the signing of the Musqueam Indian Band—YVR Airport Sustainability & Friendship Agreement. More than anything, the Agreement is based on friendship. An inventory usually also contains data to calculate the emissions. In addition, an inventory can include other emissions-related information or calculations such as emission factors (the amount of the pollutant emitted per unit activity). The objective of the research in this dissertation was to develop an emissions inventory for the transportation sector in British Columbia (BC) that could be used to answer various policy-related questions about BC's present-day and future transportation emissions. There are two distinct types of transportation emissions inventories: top-down and bottom-up. Top-down inventories are based on large-scale, overarching ('top level') data, such as total fuel sales for a given jurisdiction, that are used to calculate emissions which are then allocated to the lower levels in some manner within the jurisdiction. Bottom-up inventories work in the opposite direction, so to speak. They start with small-scale, on-the- ground (' bottom level ' ) data, such as fuel sales at each sales outlet within a jurisdiction, that are used to calculate emissions which are then summed up in some manner for the jurisdiction.

As the economic hub of central Vancouver Island, Nanaimo boasts both a vibrant business community and an exceptional quality of life. Nanaimo has transitioned from a commodity- based economy that relied on an abundance of natural resources from the forests and ocean towards a service- based “knowledge” economy that relies on the skills, talent and innovation of the local workforce. The city is now a regional centre for health services, technology, retail, construction, manufacturing, education and government services. Nanaimo is a central transportation and distribution hub for Vancouver Island. Home to an excellent deep-sea port, this ocean-side city receives 4.6 million tons (2019) of cargo through its port facilities and deep-sea terminal at Duke Point each year. Air Canada offers direct flights to Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto from the Nanaimo Airport, an all-weather facility. Seaplanes and Helijet link downtown Nanaimo to downtown Vancouver in 20 minutes.
