Its possibilities in refining the decision-making process, realizing potential patterns and creating valuable knowledge have won attention of scholars and practitioners. However, there are less studies intending to combine data mining and libraries where data generation occurs all the time. Therefore, this thesis plans to fill such a gap. Meanwhile, potential opportunities created by data mining are explored to enhance one of the most important elements of libraries: reference service. In order to thoroughly demonstrate the feasibility and applicability of data mining, literature is reviewed to establish a critical understanding of data mining in libraries and attain the current status of library reference service. The result of the literature review indicates that free online data resources other than data generated on social media are rarely considered to be applied in current library data mining mandates. Therefore, the result of the literature review motivates the presented study to utilize online free resources. Furthermore, the natural match between data mining and libraries is established. The natural match is explained by emphasizing the data richness reality and considering data mining as one kind of knowledge, an easy choice for libraries, and a wise method to overcome reference service challenges. -

Dechsakda [email protected] Follow this and additional works at: http://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/gs_rp The er search paper was a study of how digital music distribution has affected the music industry by researching different views and aspects. I believe this topic was vital to research because it give us insight on were the music industry is headed in the future. Two main research questions proposed were; “How is digital music distribution affecting the music industry?” and “In what way does the piracy industry affect the digital music industry?” The methodology used for this research was performing case studies, researching prospective and retrospective data, and analyzing sales figures and graphs. Case studies were performed on one independent artist and two major artists whom changed the digital music industry in different ways. Another pair of case studies were performed on an independent label and a major label on how changes of the digital music industry effected their business model and how piracy effected those new business models as well. I analyzed sales figures and graphs of digital music sales and physical sales to show the differences in the formats. I researched prospective data on how consumers adjusted to the digital music advancements and how piracy industry has affected them. Last I concluded all the data found during this research to show that digital music distribution is growing and could possibly be the dominant format for obtaining music, and the battle with piracy will be an ongoing process that will be hard to end anytime soon. -

Besides single screen narratives, video productions can range from animation, multiple screen installation to interactive work. Still, many aspects of digital video can be traced back to the history of film. The interface of a timeline editing software such as Cinelerra [1] shows a multitrack timeline, a viewing monitor, a bin for clips; echoing the setup of a flatbed table for editing celluloid. A dual head set up Cinelerra work station The physical materiality of film and video are fundamentaly different: celluloid versus pixels, chemicals versus algorhytms, but the relationship between film and video has mutually matured. As outlined by Matt Hanson [1b] , video expands cinematographic traditions in new directions, filmmakers can benefit from digitisation by reclaiming the central position of creativity in the film process, as pointed out by Samira Makhmalbaf. Compared to film cameras, video cameras had a strong feature: it became possible connect a monitor and view directly what the camera recorded. Today, artists can use softwares such as Lives [5] , Jahshaka [6] , Zone Minder [7] or Pure Data [8] and Linux distributions aimed at audio and visual creation such as Dyne:bolic [9] Apodio [10] and Ubuntu Studio [11] to further explore the possibilities of real time video, multiple camera input and live interaction. -

Euell Porter
Euell Porter Material prepared by Maurice Alfred Biographical Sketch of Euell Porter 1910-1998 Edwin Euell Porter was born October 10, 1910 near Franklin, Texas and died September 23, 1998, in Waco Texas. He was the last of six children born to George W. and Alma Parker Porter. His parents worked a small farm outside of Franklin in Robertson County. George W. came from Missouri and was a second generation Irish immigrant. Euell’s mother was of Cajun descent with hair as “black as coal.” His twin sisters, Addis Mae and Gladys Faye, and his brothers, Richard Bland, Samuel Lewis, and George Felton, took care of their little brother almost from his birth. When Porter was about six, his mother became bedridden with influenza and he remembered his mother saying “bring that baby here and let him stand by the bed and sing for me.” Though his mother was ill, the Porter’s sang and made music each night, with his sister Addis or his brother Sam playing the piano, and the rest of the family singing. His mother’s illness became progressively worse, and she died when he was eight. After her death, the family moved to a farm near Pettaway, Texas. Their new house and farm were much larger, with one room set aside for music. In the music room there was a pump organ and a five pedal upright piano. The family continued its tradition of singing, with his sister Addis Mae playing the organ and brother Samuel Lewis playing the piano. In the early 1920’s, Porter attended a singing school in Boone Prairie and it was there he learned to read shaped notes. -

Received: 10th September 2007 Accepted: 7th June 2008 Over millennia librarians have striven for universality: complete control of all recorded knowledge, if not through ownership then through bibliographic organisation and systems for universal availability and access. Modern digital technologies offer new possibilities of achieving universality, but also presents big challenges. This paper raises some critical questions about the concepts of “digital libraries” and ‘archiving knowledge”. It uses a basic life-cycle approach to digital libraries and considers digital library functions within the cycle of the creation, dissemination, disposal and use of born-digital and digitised content. Different types of digital libraries are identified and challenges in selection, acquisition, organisation, preservation, resource discovery and access are discussed. Technological factors are not the main issue to be addressed. Rather, it is emphasised that political and economic challenges require attention. A rational and holistic discipline of digital resources management is needed to ensure that digital content can be handed down to posterity. Introduction Librarianship is a profession of modest people. Not many of us become wealthy or powerful. It is fair to say that few of us chose this profession because we consciously sought wealth or power. And yet beneath that modest demeanour is concealed an immense power: the power that derives from control over the immeasurable wealth of human knowledge. And sometimes it seems that the modest demeanour of the librarian conceals an obsession of almost megalomaniac proportions: the obsession to create a universal library. -

Advisor: Christopher Lee Collection development is an important aspect of archival theory and work; however, few studies have looked at collection development in practice. It has also been suggested that collection development policies and plans can help to limit competition by including discussions of collaborative agreements. This paper describes a study of online archival collection development policies to determine what these documents contain and whether or not collaboration and competition are discussed. This study searched the websites of 334 repositories’ to identify online collection development policies. Available policies were then coded using the 26 elements defined in Faye Phillips’ 1984 guidelines for archival collection development policies. Available discussions of collaboration within the policies were also coded. The results suggest that repositories are using a variety of materials when writing policies and collaborative agreements in policies are the exception rather than the rule. Headings: Archives.
