It is designed as a ready reference for law enforcement personnel who are confronted with hundreds of slang terms and code words used to identify a wide variety of controlled substances, designer drugs, synthetic compounds, measurements, locations, weapons, and other miscellaneous terms relevant to the drug trade. Automated Kappa Number Determination of Pulp
Application Note YSI, a Xylem Brand • XA00077 Automated Kappa Number Determination of Pulp PULP & PAPER SERIES Introduction The Kappa number describes the Lignin content of pulp which gives information about the bleaching process of the pulp. The longer the pulp was cooked and bleached the lower the Kappa number is. For the determination of the Kappa number a sample weight adjusted to the expected result is chopped and inserted into a beaker, then 400 ml of water is added. The sample/water mixture is stirred for 10 minutes. Afterwards 50 ml of potassium permanganate (KMnO4, 0.02 mol/L) and 50 ml sulfuric acid (H2SO4, 2 mol/L) are added simultaneously. The mixture is stirred for another 10 minutes. The reaction is stopped by adding 10 ml potassium iodide (KI, 1mol/l). The excess of KMnO4 reacts with Iodide to Iodine, which is titrated with sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3, 0.2 mol/L). Chemical Equations: The weight is adjusted to a consumption of about 50% of the MnO4- . - + ➔ - Lignin + MnO4 + 4 H oxidised Lignin + MnO4 (excess) + MnO2 + 2 H2O The reaction is stopped by adding KI. - - + ➔ 2+ 2 MnO4 + 10 I + 16 H 2 Mn + 5 I2 + 8 H2O The formed Iodine is titrated with Na2S2O3. 2- ➔ - 2 S2O3 + I2 S4O6 + 2 I Calculation of the Kappa number: 1. Sacco Analyst in Illicit Drugs and Crime Policy Kristin Finklea Specialist in Domestic Security May 3, 2016 Congressional Research Service 7-5700 www.crs.gov R42066 Synthetic Drugs: Overview and Issues for Congress Summary Synthetic drugs, as opposed to natural drugs, are chemically produced in a laboratory. Their chemical structure can be either identical to or different from naturally occurring drugs, and their effects are designed to mimic or even enhance those of natural drugs. When produced clandestinely, they are not typically controlled pharmaceutical substances intended for legitimate medical use. Designer drugs are a form of synthetic drugs. They contain slightly modified molecular structures of illegal or controlled substances, and they are modified in order to circumvent existing drug laws. While the issue of synthetic drugs and their abuse is not new, Congress has demonstrated a renewed concern with the issue. From 2009 to 2011, synthetic drug abuse was reported to have dramatically increased. During this time period, calls to poison control centers for incidents relating to harmful effects of synthetic cannabinoids (such as “K2” and “Spice”) and stimulants (such as “bath salts”) increased at what some considered to be an alarming rate. The number of hospital emergency department visits involving synthetic cannabinoids more than doubled from 2010 to 2011. In 2012 and 2013, however, the number of calls to poison control centers for incidents relating to harmful effects of synthetic cannabinoids and synthetic stimulants decreased. Calls regarding bath salts have declined each year since 2011, while calls regarding synthetic cannabinoids have increased since the drops in 2012 and 2013. -

ISSN 2054-2046 Drugs and Development: The Great Disconnect Julia Buxton Policy Report 2 | January 2015 Drugs and Development: The Great Disconnect Julia Buxton∗ Policy Report 2 | January 2015 Key Points • The 2016 United Nations General Assembly Special Session on the World Drug Problem (UNGASS) will see a strong lobby in support of development oriented responses to the problem of drug supply, including from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). • The promotion of Alternative Development (AD) programmes that provide legal, non-drug related economic opportunities for drug crop cultivators reflects the limited success of enforcement responses, greater awareness of the development dimensions of cultivation activities and the importance of drugs and development agencies working co-operatively in drug environments. • Evidence from thirty years of AD programming demonstrates limited success in supply reduction and that poorly monitored and weakly evaluated programmes cause more harm than good; there has been little uptake of best practice approaches, cultivators rarely benefit from AD programmes, the concept of AD is contested and there is no shared understanding of ‘development’. • AD was popularised in the 1990s when development discourse emphasised participatory approaches and human wellbeing. This is distinct from the development approaches of the 2000s, which have been ‘securitised’ in the aftermath of the Global War on Terror and which re-legitimise military participation in AD. • UNGASS 2016 provides an opportunity for critical scrutiny of AD and the constraints imposed by the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs on innovative, rights based and nationally owned supply responses. Cultivation is a development not a crime and security issue. -
