Nuytsia 20: 27–36(2010). Recent work has resulted in the recognition of five new species of Melaleuca from the south-west of Western Australia: M. genialis Lepschi, M. ochroma Lepschi, M. protrusa Craven & Lepschi, M. sophisma Lepschi, and M. ulicoides Craven & Lepschi. Reassessment of the taxonomic status of three previously described taxa shows that specific rank is warranted and the following three new combinations are made: M. acutifolia (Benth.) Craven & Lepschi, M. calcicola (Barlow ex Craven) Craven & Lepschi, and M. spectabilis (Barlow ex Craven) Craven & Lepschi. Melaleuca citrina Turcz. is a later homonym of M. citrina (Curtis) Dum.Cours. and the replacement name M. lutea Craven is provided. Melaleuca viminalis (Sol. ex Gaertn.) Byrnes, hitherto known only from eastern Australia has recently been collected from the Kimberley region of northern Western Australia. Introduction Melaleuca L. is one of the larger genera of Myrtaceae and, as it is currently circumscribed, contains about 280 species. The genus is predominantly Australian with indigenous taxa also occurring in Malesia, New Caledonia, Lord Howe Island and Tasmania. -

Verna and I visited Cressbrook Dam, one of Toowoomba7s water supply dams , in September where , among other plants, mainly Eucalypts, a number of Callistemon jviminalis have been planted in the camping and picnic areas surrounding the dam . At the time of our visit the area was so dry all grass and other ground cover vegetation had disappeared and left only dust . The C. viminalis , however , were in full flower and JatEractinglots of nectar feehng birds and insects . As a matter of interest it was noted "thatvirtually all the additional plantings in the camping and picnic areas were Australian species . I j In November we spent a few days in the Tenterfield area of northern New South !wales . The area had received good rain and the green vista was in stark contrast to the dry ,parched conditions which existed when we passed through that area in September 2000 . Kunzea capitata was massed with mauve-pink flowers on Mount MacKenzie whch is just west of Tenterfield. In Bald Rock and Boonoo Boonoo National Parks Callistemon pallidus , Callistemon flavo-virens and Callistemon viminalis were flowering . -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. For more information please see: www.environment.gov.au/heritage/anhat/index.html Limitations • ANHAT currently contains information on the distribution of over 30,000 Australian taxa. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. Selecting and Planting Trees to Lower Risk of Pipe Blockages
Pipes : Selecting and planting trees to lower risk of blockages This guide is designed to help you select tree and shrub species that will minimise a common problem caused by trees in home gardens – blockages (or chokes) in sewerage and water pipes. Blockages of pipes don’t only cause inconvenience; they can also result in serious health problems if they lead to sewage overflowing. They are expensive to clear and if sections of pipe need to be replaced, or a problem tree removed, the cost can be significant. Many people don’t plant trees anywhere near their pipes, though this guide lists many species you can confidently plant as close as two metres. Fine hair roots will seek out and penetrate even small cracks or joints in pipes. In addition, the force from larger roots can crack previously sound pipes, creating an entry point. Once roots have entered a pipe they grow quickly and can cause serious and costly failures in pipe systems. Some species’ roots, for instance willows and poplars, can be found more than 30 metres from the tree base. It’s much better to avoid the cause of tree root problems rather than face an inconvenient and costly remedy after the damage has been done. What if the blockage is on my property? If you have a blockage in pipes before the connection to SA Water’s mains in the street or an easement, it is your responsibility. To clear any blockages and replace sections if necessary, the services of a registered plumber must be used – this is a legal requirement of the Sewerage Act 1929. -

Plant Biodiversity Science, Discovery, and Conservation: Case Studies from Australasia and the Pacific Craig Costion School of Earth and Environmental Sciences Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology University of Adelaide Adelaide, SA 5005 Thesis by publication submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology July 2011 ABSTRACT This thesis advances plant biodiversity knowledge in three separate bioregions, Micronesia, the Queensland Wet Tropics, and South Australia. A systematic treatment of the endemic flora of Micronesia is presented for the first time thus advancing alpha taxonomy for the Micronesia-Polynesia biodiversity hotspot region. The recognized species boundaries are used in combination with all known botanical collections as a basis for assessing the degree of threat for the endemic plants of the Palau archipelago located at the western most edge of Micronesia’s Caroline Islands. A preliminary assessment is conducted utilizing the IUCN red list Criteria followed by a new proposed alternative methodology that enables a degree of threat to be established utilizing existing data. Historical records and archaeological evidence are reviewed to establish the minimum extent of deforestation on the islands of Palau since the arrival of humans. This enabled a quantification of population declines of the majority of plants endemic to the archipelago. In the state of South Australia, the importance of establishing concepts of endemism is emphasized even further. A thorough scientific assessment is presented on the state’s proposed biological corridor reserve network. The report highlights the exclusion from the reserve system of one of the state’s most important hotspots of plant endemism that is highly threatened from habitat fragmentation and promotes the use of biodiversity indices to guide conservation priorities in setting up reserve networks.
