This show gathers several pieces that have never been publicly exhibited in mainland China before. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED REAR WINDOWS PRADA RONG ZHAI Daily except Mon until Jan 19 2020 186 Shaanxi Bei Lu, near Nanjing Xi Lu 陕西北路186号, 近南京西路 Sometimes, art gives you goosebumps. BEING TIME′ THE TIME BEING: YE HONGXING’S NEW SERIES ART+ SHANGHAI GALLERY Daily except Mon until Dec 30 2019 1/F, 191 Nan Suzhou Lu, near Sichuan Zhong Lu 南苏州路191号一层, 近四川中路 Ye Hongxing’s new creations presented for ‘Being Time′ The Time Be- ing’, be they impressively large triptychs or smaller paintings, strike with a refreshing and remarkably different language of artistic expression. Ye Hongxing never stops surprising, however, each time reinventing her -ar tistic language she remains true to her voice and vision. With each stylis- tic reinvention, she masters pictorial balance and complex compositions and a sense of continuum with her previous work. The concept of time and being informs her latest series of work. In her attempt to portray an instant and eternity, she plays with metaphysical, reflects on her thoughts and emotions, records and creates memories at the same time as she works on her painting. She leaves space on her canvas for the sponta- neous encounters with her subconscious and sober observations of her aware mind. ‘Being Time, The Time Being’ is at the same time simple and complex for understanding. It is about the architecture of time and awareness of a luminary mind of where he or she stands in it. This solo show is a spacetime continuum where the artist expresses the wilderness of her imagination and turns her poetic, philosophical, and a bit esoteric thinking into bold and loud colors, daring combinations, and intriguing forms. She revisits the subjects and motives of her almost 20-year prac- tice, re-evaluates the ideas of accumulation and personal growth, re-ex- amines the concept of linear and chaotic, relative and absolute, and final- ly elaborates on the cosmology of human’s relationship and all beings. XU ZHEN: HELLO MADEIN GALLERY Daily except Mon until Dec 31 2019 Rm 106, 2879 Longteng Da Dao, near Fenggu Lu 龙腾大道2879号106室, 近丰谷路 Xu Zhen’s recent works are on show at MadeIn Gallery. • Shanghai, China Overview Introduction
Shanghai, China Overview Introduction The name Shanghai still conjures images of romance, mystery and adventure, but for decades it was an austere backwater. After the success of Mao Zedong's communist revolution in 1949, the authorities clamped down hard on Shanghai, castigating China's second city for its prewar status as a playground of gangsters and colonial adventurers. And so it was. In its heyday, the 1920s and '30s, cosmopolitan Shanghai was a dynamic melting pot for people, ideas and money from all over the planet. Business boomed, fortunes were made, and everything seemed possible. It was a time of breakneck industrial progress, swaggering confidence and smoky jazz venues. Thanks to economic reforms implemented in the 1980s by Deng Xiaoping, Shanghai's commercial potential has reemerged and is flourishing again. Stand today on the historic Bund and look across the Huangpu River. The soaring 1,614-ft/492-m Shanghai World Financial Center tower looms over the ambitious skyline of the Pudong financial district. Alongside it are other key landmarks: the glittering, 88- story Jinmao Building; the rocket-shaped Oriental Pearl TV Tower; and the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The 128-story Shanghai Tower is the tallest building in China (and, after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the second-tallest in the world). Glass-and-steel skyscrapers reach for the clouds, Mercedes sedans cruise the neon-lit streets, luxury- brand boutiques stock all the stylish trappings available in New York, and the restaurant, bar and clubbing scene pulsates with an energy all its own. Perhaps more than any other city in Asia, Shanghai has the confidence and sheer determination to forge a glittering future as one of the world's most important commercial centers.

Rockbund Project & Rockbund Art Museum Shanghai, China 2006 – 2011 Following the establishment of international trading relations in the nineteenth century, Shanghai became a commercial and cultural centre of East Asia and home to a large number of European commercial offices and consulates. Examples of Shanghai’s Art Deco style – European building styles combined with Asian elements, characteristic of the city’s early twentieth century architecture, are strung along the Bund, Shanghai’s boulevard on the west bank of the Huangpu river. An ensemble of historic buildings, now called the Rockbund Project, reflects the diversity of the colonial architecture and forms the Northern part of the Bund. By restoring the existing buildings and planning new ones, a team of international architects is helping to revitalise the Rockbund Project, which will accommodate office complexes, hotels, retail and apartments. David Chipperfield Architects has been commissioned with the restoration and conversion of eleven buildings1. The aim of the restoration concept is to present buildings that have aged with dignity and style: The façades will be carefully cleaned and repaired without destroying the original fabric. Subsequent conversions will be removed and the buildings returned to their original state as much as possible. Existing structures within the roof area of some buildings will be expanded in reaction to contemporary changes in usage. The expansion of the Andrews & George Building to create Rockbund 6 will see its historic fabric being combined with contemporary architecture: The listed three- storey façade of the existing building that marks the southern edge of the planning area will be renovated and eleven storeys added in the form of a stacked construction.

WORDS DAVID ELLIOTT PLAYING TO THE GALLERIES While it may have become best known for its explosion of skyscrapers, Shanghai has also been busy building an impressive collection of contemporary art museums. ike Sydney and Melbourne, NYC and LA, and Delhi and Mumbai, Beijing and Shanghai have always competed with each other. As the capital, Beijing has the political Lstatus, but Shanghai has long been the commercial hub of China. In 2008, Beijing proudly presented the Olympic Games, but Shanghai was just as honoured to host the 2010 World Expo. Last year saw the topping out of the Shanghai Tower, China’s tallest (and the second highest in the world), but there are rumours that a new skyscraper in Beijing’s CBD will be even higher. China’s museum and gallery sector is no different. Beijing has claimed superiority, but now Shanghai is a very serious challenger, especially in the new growth area of private museums. Shanghai is huge – by most counts the biggest city in the world – and its art museums are spread out. Luckily, the city’s metro is excellent, so you can get to most of them by under- ground, and short taxi hops will see to the remainder. ❯ The Long Museum, PHOTOGRAPHY: GETTY IMAGES West Bund, Shanghai 82 QANTAS SEPTEMBER 2014 ART SHANGHAI CENTRAL SHANGHAI THE LONG MUSEUM IS ONE A good place to start is Shanghai Museum on People’s Square (201 OF THE BEST TO GAIN AN Renmin Avenue; 9am-5pm daily, free; www.shanghaimuseum.net/ en). • 7Th Shanghai Biennale Translocalmotion
--- Press release, March 2008 --- 7th Shanghai Biennale Translocalmotion Opening: 8 September 2008 Duration: 9 September - 16 November 2008 Artistic Director: Zhang Qing Curators: Julian Heynen, Henk Slager Since its inauguration the Shanghai Biennale has repeatedly taken the city itself and its urban conditions as a starting point for its artistic explorations. In line with this inner logic, the curatorial team of the 2008 edition proposes to focus on one of the most important cornerstones of urban design: the public square which is a prime location of transfer, connection, connectivity, meeting, social and economical exchange. Translocalmotion As a starting point for the Seventh Shanghai Biennale the curatorial team suggested utilizing People’s Square, of which the Shanghai Art Museum is actually part of. This public square seems to contain on a small-scale level a lot of crucial issues that the current Chinese society faces today. One of the most significant aspects of these is the migration from underdeveloped rural areas to developed urban spaces, in search of opportunities amidst the drastic social and economic changes in China. The nation is rapidly developing from an agricultural society to an industrialized and digitized one, and from planned economy to market economy. At People’s Square the curatorial team found many issues related to the transition, such as the topical capitalism, the ultramodern architecture that express a spirit of optimism, the desire for a better life envisioned by for example the Grand Theater and the Museum for Urban Planning, as well as the numerous small stands operated by migr ants. Project For the 2008 Shanghai Biennale the curatorial team would like to connect the Shanghai Art Museum directly to People’s Square.

The practice was commissioned with the restoration and conversion of eleven 1 of these buildings. During the course of their history the buildings have undergone various changes and mutations. These were removed and the buildings returned to their former state where feasible. The façades were carefully cleaned and repaired, maintaining as much of the original fabric as possible. The extensions to the National Industrial Bank (N.I.B.) and the building for the Royal Asiatic Society (R.A.S.) are visible from Museum Square, an inner courtyard located in the south-west of the block. The new façades have been rendered using ‘Shanghai Plaster’ of the same quality as that used on the adjoining buildings. The former R.A.S. Building, once China’s first public museum, now houses the Rockbund Art Museum, dedicated to contemporary art.
