Presbyterian „Connection‟ June 2012 Volume 19 Issue 6 Presbyterian „Connection‟ June 2012 Volume 19 Issue 6 From the Pen of Reverend Terry The little boy tugs on the salesman’s arm. “What’s that?” Not once, not twice but ceaselessly, he repeats the sequence -- “What’s that?” Each time the salesman responds graciously. After all, he wants the parents to buy a car. But we the audience can tell there is a slight edge growing in his voice. Or maybe it’s simply that we are feeling that impatience even as we chuckle at the poor man’s predicament. Finally, the little boy points to a door and says in the same tone he’s used so many times before, “What’s that?” “The restroom,” the salesman answers. With a sigh of relief and a full out laugh we watch the little boy hurry away, presumably toward the restroom. I’ve seen this commercial many, many times. Still it makes me laugh. It also fills me with a touch of wistfulness for the years when my children were so curious. Everything they encountered was a new horizon to explore; a mystery to be unraveled; a phenomenon to investigate. In Matthew, Jesus tells the disciples unless “you change and become like children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” I wonder if becoming like children includes this wide-eyed curiosity about…well, everything? Imagine the difference it would make to face life’s challenges (including change) with a curious attitude instead of with hardened opposition. I wonder…… Many blessings, Terry 1 WORSHIP IN JUNE June 3 Trinity Sunday Isaiah 6: 1-8; Psalm 29 Romans 8: 12-17; John 3: 1-17 Communion “Three and One” June 10 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 Samuel 8; Psalm 138; 2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1; Mark 4: 21-25 Potluck “Nothing Hidden; Nothing Secret” June 17 11th Sunday of Ordinary Time Father’s Day 1 Samuel 15: 34- 16:13; Psalm 20; 2 Corinthians 5:6-10; Mark 4: 26-34 Blessing of the Food Pantry “Jesse” June 24 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 Samuel 17; Psalm 9 2 Corinthians 6: 1-13; Mark 4:35-41 Service of Wholeness and Healing “Peace, Be Still” 2 The Legend of the Sand Dollar A minister parked her car in a no-parking Submitted by Betty Aaron zone in a large city because she was short of time and couldn't find a space There's a lovely little legend with a meter. We have book 1 of the Acts of Faith series entitled THE CENTURION’S WIFE by Davis Bunn and Janette Oke. This series was donated to the library. Also donated to the library is the non-fiction book entitled CHOOSING FORGIVENESS by Nancy L. DeMoss. We have a new non-fiction book entitled WHAT JESUS DEMANDS FROM THE WORLD by John Piper and it is also our featured book. “The aim of this book is God-glorifying obedience to Jesus. To that end I am seeking to obey Jesus’ last command: “Make disciples of all nations…teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matt. 28:19-20). Jesus’ final command was to teach all his commandments. My prayer for this book is that it will serve that global mission--to “make disciples of all nations…teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” I pray I am a faithful echo of Jesus when he said, “He who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him” (John 8:26).” John Piper author of WHAT JESUS DEMANDS FROM THE WORLD Also donated to the library are the fiction videos: SARAH PLAIN & TALL, and SKYLARK. An audio was donated: THE AWAKENING HEART by Betty Eadie. The DVD COURAGEOUS was also donated to the library and is the story about everyday heroes, our law enforcement officers. Thank you to all who so generously donate to the library. Enjoy the library. Faye Brackett, Librarian 5 MISSION MINUTE JUNE-2012 Submitted by Faye Brackett Members of ARMSS (Association of Retired Ministers, their Spouses, or Survivors) serve the whole church. Like Philip in Acts 8:26-40, we are taken to different places of service. The connection with the Iglesia Presbiteriana/Reformada (IPRC) in Cuba is an example. In recent years, members of ARMSS have traveled in small groups to visit and encourage our brothers and sisters in Christ in Cuba. In 2009, our group visited the seminary in Matanzas, where Rev. Bob Worley discovered a dire need in the library. Our travel group pledged personally--and Bob Worley challenged ARMSS in convention--to restock the library and prepare it for the acquisition of electronic resources. Some encouraged friends and churches to fund computers ready for high-speed Internet access. Many of the new books and computers were delivered aboard a Pastors for Peace bus purchased for IRPC. Our 2012 group witnessed the ongoing expansion of the seminary library. ARMSS crossed a short distance geographically and a huge gulf politically to equip old and young ministers to serve Christ in Cuba. On Older Adult Sunday (May 6th) we lift up those who have blazed the trail for us, those whose gifts still mightily enrich the church and the world. Three groups within the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) specifically support the life and ministry of these saints: ARMSS, Presbyterian Older Adult Ministry Network (POAMN), and Presbyterian Association of Homes & Services for the Aging (PAHSA). Rev. Ella M. Banton, Vice President, ARMSS The Mission Committee would also like to thank our church family for all your support of the One Great Hour Of Sharing. Our donations totaled $360.13. Mission Committee 6 Father’s Day - June 17th, 2012 Father’s Day has a very interesting history embedded in it. The thought for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington. The idea of having a Father’s Day came to the mind of Sonora Smart while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. After the death of her mother, she along with her siblings was raised by her father, William Jackson Smart. Sonora wanted to tell her father how special he was and what role he played in her life. She wanted to honor her father’s parental sacrifices that he made for his children.

  • Fear in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and a Pathway to Reconciliation
Fear in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a Pathway to Reconciliation Meandering Philosophy and Musings Mingled with Scripture Revision B By Tom Irvine Email: [email protected] July 4, 2020 To fear God is to have absolute reverence and awe for an Almighty God, the Creator of all things. But the fear discussed in this paper is worry and dread over potential loss or calamity. This fear can include angst regarding a pending change, even though that change may be a needed growth opportunity, or otherwise bring blessings. The fear may be deeply rooted in a person’s subconscious due to genetic predispositions or past traumatic experiences. Furthermore, fear can exist on an individual or an institutional basis. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has accomplished an immeasurable amount of good for innumerable souls by providing a faith community for like-minded people, offering disaster relief to those in distress and in so many other ways. In addition, the LDS Church provides excellent education opportunities through its BYU campuses and the BYU Pathway program. 1 But the Church has traumatized others via certain fear-based policies and unrighteous dominion. Some trauma victims leave the Church and may never return. Others are the “walking wounded” who still participate in Church for social or altruistic reasons even though their bubbles have burst, or their “shelves” have broken. This paper is neither a vindication of the Church nor an expose. Rather it is a paper that wrestles with some real and messy issues with the hopes that some mutual understanding and peaceful reconciliation can be achieved.

About those living in the final stages of this process, it might truly be said that they are “Specialists without spirit, sensualists without heart.” – Max Weber (182, translation altered) magine for a minute that you not only work in English but that you Ialso believe in God. If you did, you might lead a double life, engaged five or six days of every week deconstructing master narratives or tracking knowledge /power, and then on the seventh day, at least for several hours, doing something altogether different. Even if those hours were your most important ones, you would probably keep the secret to yourself – for reasons best explained, I’m inclined to think, by the history of higher learning in the U.S., which began with religious ties but then moved aggres- sively, over the last hundred years or so, toward secularism, science, and specialization. And given the academy’s astonishing growth, who would want to argue now against this move? By abandoning our claim to “ultimate values,” by becoming producers of specialist knowledge, our forerunners won a privileged place in the emerging social order, an order that no longer needed values anyway, premised as it was on “rationality” in the adminis- tration of its human subjects.

  • Near Death Experiences
Near Death Experiences An Evaluation from the Theological Perspective of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod June 2015 History, Beliefs, Practices Identity: Near death experiences (NDEs) are psychological events, at times involving mystical or religious insights, reportedly experienced by some individuals who are declared dead, close to death, or involved in an extreme physical or emotional crisis. Founder: None Statistics: According to the results of a 1992 Gallup poll, about 5% of the adult population of the United States has experienced an NDE.1 History: Psychologist Raymond Moody coined the term “near death experience” in his 1975 book, Life after Life. His book sparked interest in the subject and the formation of an association for the study of NDEs. In his book, Moody studied 50 NDE reports, many of which included a description of leaving one’s body, a journey through a tunnel, and meeting a “being” of light. Other books followed, including Life at Death (Kenneth Ring, 1980), Recollections of Death (Michael Sabom, 1982), Closer to the Light (Melvin Morse, 1990, a study of the NDEs of children), Embraced by the Light (Betty Eadie, 1992), and Saved by the Light (Dannion Brinkley, 1994). Interest in NDEs continues to grow due to many popular accounts, including Heaven Is for Real: A Little Boy’s Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back (Todd Burpo, 2010), To Heaven and Back: A Doctor’s Extraordinary Account of Her Death, Heaven, Angels, and Life Again (Mary Neal, 2012), and Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife

  • Near- Death Experiences”
ABSTRACT Title of Document: FIELD NOTES FROM THE LIGHT: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC STUDY OF THE MEANING AND SIGNIFICANCE OF “NEAR- DEATH EXPERIENCES” Laura Suzanne Gordon Doctor of Philosophy, 2007 Directed By: Professor John L. Caughey Department of American Studies This dissertation is based on a comprehensive study which investigated the meaning and social significance of “near-death experiences” (NDEs) by situating 50 experiencers (NDErs) as the “inside” experts on these profound, subjective experiences and their real-world impact. I used a phenomenological, “person- centered” ethnographic approach, new to Near-Death Studies, to make experiencers’ lives the orienting framework for my study. Informed by “reformist” qualitative- research ethics and health-education-and-counseling values, I analyzed study- participants’ life-history narratives against medical-scientific Near-Death Studies explanatory models, an NDE-Integration-Trajectory (NDE IT) patterns model, and social construction and identity-alternation theory. My findings were, first, that study participants’ descriptions of NDE impact and aftereffects, which matched previous findings, were adequately explained by neither social construction nor medical-scientific theory. Second, participants in this and previous studies described significant NDE interpretation and integration problems, in which I recognized a previously unidentified, health-education-and- counseling-related, pattern of unmet NDE integration needs. Third, my findings supported the previous NDE IT findings and model; and also recognized the importance of individuals’ multiple cultural meaning systems in shaping their NDE integration patterns.. Fourth, 29 of 50 study participants had not sought out and did not identify Near-Death Studies as a useful NDE integration context or resource; and they described it negatively if they mentioned it at all.

It was several years later that I heard a friend’s wife tell of her own NDE when she nearly died of an allergic reaction while under general anesthetic. More than ten years later, in 1998, I started the Near Death Experience Research Foundation and its corresponding website, NDERF.org. One of my goals for the site was to collect as many NDEs as I could and to collect them through a questionnaire that would make it easy to separate and study their elements.

  • Mormonism and the New Spirituality: LDS Women's Hybrid Spiritualities by Doe Daughtrey a Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulf
Mormonism and the New Spirituality: LDS Women's Hybrid Spiritualities by Doe Daughtrey A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved April 2012 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Linell Cady, Chair Colleen McDannell Tisa Wenger Tracy Fessenden ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2012 ABSTRACT This dissertation illuminates overlaps in Mormonism and the New Spirituality in North America, showing their shared history and epistemologies. As example of these connections, it introduces ethnographic data from women who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in order to show (a) how living LDS women adapt and integrate elements from the New Spirituality with Mormon ideas about the nature of reality into hybrid spiritualities; and (b) how they negotiate their blended religious identities both in relation to the current American New Spirituality milieu and the highly centralized, hierarchical, and patriarchal Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The study focuses on religious hybridity with an emphasis on gender and the negotiation of power deriving from patriarchal religious authority, highlighting the dance between institutional power structures and individual authority. It illuminates processes and discourses of religious adaptation and synthesis through which these LDS women creatively and provocatively challenge LDS Church formal power structures. i DEDICATION This project is dedicated to my family: my husband, David, who ongoingly chooses and supports me not just in spite of but in celebration of our differences; my children Tatiana, Astrid, Dominic, Natasha, and Mikhail, who are my heroes and my champions; my grandchildren, Cozette, Tristan, Donovan, Nathaniel, and Vivienne, who are so creative and open to new possibilities; my father Ray, to whom I owe my intellectual curiosity and pursuit of excellence in teaching, but who died before I could complete the project; and my mother Callie, who I now have the privilege of caring for.

  • Embraced by the Church? Betty Eadie, Near-Death Experiences, and Mormonism
Embraced by the Church? Betty Eadie, Near-Death Experiences, and Mormonism Massimo Introvigne IN 1975 PSYCHIATRIST RAYMOND A. MOODY introduced the expression "near-death experience" (NDE) in his bestselling book Life After Life. By 1988 more than 3 million copies of the book had been sold (not including foreign translations).1 Following the early pioneer work by Swiss-born psychiatrist Elisabeth Kiibler-Ross (who wrote the foreword to Life After Life) on terminally ill patients, Moody described hundreds of experiences he had collected from people who had been clinically "dead" for minutes or hours, had re-entered life, and were able to tell the stories of their NDEs. According to Moody, NDEs include fifteen elements—although no single NDE Moody collected had all the elements, most had seven or more: * "ineffability/' or extreme difficulty to find words apt to convey the NDE; * "hearing the news," hearing doctors pronouncing the experiencer "dead"; * initial "feelings of peace and quiet"; * then a strong "noise": sometimes (but not always) pleasant music; * passing through a "dark tunnel"; * being "out of body" (and able to look at it from "outside"); * "meeting others," either unknown spirits or deceased loved ones; * meeting, after the human spirits, "a great 'Being of Light'"; 1. Raymond A. Moody, Life After Life: The Investigation of a Phenomenon—Survival of Bodily Death (St. Simonds Island, GA: Mockingbird Books, 1975). For the claim of 3 million copies in print, see the paperback edition published in New York by Bantam Books, 1988.

Spirits Alive Souls on the Journey by Flora May Sherwin Litt-Irwin I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that it is I, the LORD, the God of Israel who call you by your name. Isaiah 45:3 The following is a prayer response to God, the Revealer of Secrets, inspired by the above scripture, written by Joyce Rupp in Fragments of Your Ancient Name Secrets from the storeroom of the divine, Disclosures as yet unnamed and restricted, Veiled concealments and awaiting revelation, All this rests within your enormous treasury. What could you be keeping hidden from me? What is disguised that can enhance my growth? How and when will you reveal something more? All these questions rise and fall from my mind While you, Revealer of Secrets, simply smile, Knowing full well no one hurries this process. Today: I open my spirit for further revelation. Spirits Alive - Souls on the Journey Sharing First Thoughts Travelling on a bus from Toronto to Hamilton, I was seated beside a young woman. I do not often speak much with a fellow passenger, but this time a conversation easily began. She was a second year engineering student at McMaster University. Inquiring about her plans, she shared with me her dream of going to Africa upon graduation. She had a deep desire to help the people by building up the infrastructure of a country there. I could hear the passion in her voice as she spoke. But, she had some doubts about how that would work out, being a woman in a traditionally male profession.
