The opposing forces of metamorphosis and continuation have dominated the evolution of the instrument with the most rapid and drastic changes to its conception and practice witnessed in the twentieth century. This dissertation is a musical and cultural study of the zheng’s living tradition from traditional practice to contemporary evolution, with an emphasis on the transformation of its musical and cultural identity. The studied areas include composition, dissemination, performance technique, and aesthetics. These discussions reveal an underlying ancient Chinese aesthetic principle drawn from both Confucian and Taoist philosophies that applies to all developmental periods of the zheng––the relationship between sheng (generated sound) and yin (cultivated sound). In addition to being a researcher, the author combines her four-decade long experience of performing and studying the instrument with the voices of four generations of zheng performers and those of Chinese and non-Chinese zheng composers and scholars to reveal the core musical and aesthetic elements of traditional zheng practice. Crucially this includes analyzing contemporary changes in Mainland China and North America since the twentieth century in the context of political influences, Westernization, and globalization. The author argues that the fundamental values of traditional zheng practice are still pertinent to the contemporary development of the instrument. ii PREFACE The study that formed the foundation of this dissertation required the approval of the RISe UBC Behavioural Research Ethics Board. The Principal Investigator (PI) was Nathan Hesselink, the Department Approver in the music department was Richard B. Kurth, and the Primary Contact was myself, Mei Han. The study, numbered H09-03060, was deemed to be a behavioural study of minimal risk. The initial approval date for the study was December 1, 2009, and the study required ethics reviews with annual renewals. Study completion occurred September 29, 2012. Please allow me to expatiate these on the case of Chinese nanyin(南音, southern music). I. The precious multi-values of nanyin decide the necessity of protection and transmission for Chinese nanyin. Nanyin, also known as “nanqu” (南曲), “nanyue” (南乐), “nanguan” (南管), “xianguan” (弦管), is one of the oldest music genres with strong local characteristics. As major musical genre, it prevails in the south of Fujian – both in the cities and countryside of Quanzhou, Xiamen, Zhangzhou – and is also quite popular in Taiwan, Hongkong, Macao and the countries of Southeast Asia inhabited by Chinese immigrants from South Fujian. The music of nanyin is also found in various Fujian local operas such as Liyuan Opera (梨园戏), Gaojia Opera (高甲戏), line-leading puppet show (提线木偶戏), Dacheng Opera (打城戏) and the like, forming an essential part of their vocal melodies and instrumental music. As the intangible cultural heritage, nanyin has such values as follows. I.I. Academic value and historical value Nanyin enjoys a reputation as “a living fossil of the ancient music”, as we can trace its relevance to and inheritance of Chinese ancient music in terms of their musical phenomena and features of musical form.

    Chinese Video Tape (3) 3-1 "Gusuxing" – Dizi (transverse flute) with ensemble. Song is based on melodies from music found in Jiangsu province. Note the lyrical quality that depicts a teahouse and garden. Ensemble also features the erhu (bowed lute), sheng (mouth organ), yangqin (hammered zither), zheng (plucked zither with movable bridges), and pipa (plucked lute). 3-2 "Shimian maifu" - Pipa solo (Lute) – famous solo piece that depicts an ancient battle. Performance techniques include tremolo (plucking the strings quickly with alternating fingers), stopping the string with the fingernails, and striking the body of the instrument to depict the sounds of war. 3-3 "Erquan yingyue" - Erhu with yangqin (zither). Erhu was originally used only for accompanying the voice or in ensemble settings but since the 1900s become a solo instrument as well. 3-4 "Yuzhuo changwan" – Zheng (zither) solo – song depicting a fisherman singing in the evening. Note use of pitch bending by pressing the strings (called an) and vibrato (called rou). 3-5 "Chunjiang huayeuye" - ten part instrumental ensemble suite. Depicts the mood of a river flowing on a spring night. Other instruments include a dongxiao (end-blown flute), erhu, sheng, yangqin, zheng, and pipa. The lead instruments are the dongxiao and the pipa. 3-6 "Paixiongwu" – excerpt from theatre work, depicts men walking down the street beating their chests. Originally a folk dance, it eventually made its way into the theatre. Accompanied here by a paiban (clapper), erxian (fiddle), dongxiao (flute), sanxian (lute), pipa, xiangzhan (small gong), nangu (drum), and gujiao (small gong). Dancers use a sibao ( clappers ), ruan (large, plucked lute), yugu ( drum ), and erxian (fiddle).

Hopkins The lexical data reported in this Chuj-English dictionary were gathered during my dissertation field work in 1964-65. My first exposure to the Chuj language was in 1962, when I went to Huehuetenango with Norman A. McQuown and Brent Berlin to gather data on the languages of the Cuchumatanes (Berlin et al. 1969). At the time I was a graduate student at the University of Texas, employed as a research assistant on the University of Chicago's Chiapas Study Projects, directed by McQuown (McQuown and Pitt-Rivers 1970). Working through the Maryknoll priests who were then the Catholic clergy in the indigenous areas of Huehuetenango and elsewhere in Guatemala, we recorded material, usually in the form of 100-word Swadesh lists (for glottochronology), from several languages. The sample included two speakers of the Chuj variety of San Mateo Ixtatán (including the man who was later to become my major informant). In the Spring of 1962, as field work for the project wound down, I returned to Austin to finish drafting my Master's thesis, and then went on to Chicago to begin graduate studies in Anthropology at the University of Chicago, with McQuown as my major professor. I continued to work on Chiapas project materials in McQuown's archives, and in 1963 he assigned me the Chuj language as the topic of my upcoming doctoral dissertation.

During this time, the zheng, as one of the principal Chinese instruments, was used in both ensemble and solo performances, playing an important role in Chinese music history. Erhu concerto is a type of music which was born under integration of Chinese and western cultures. It is one of the most typical solo concertos in Chinese national musical instruments. Since the establishment of new China, Erhu concerto has developed rapidly. Erhu concerto generates significant influence on development of Erhu music and occupies an important position in development history of Erhu music. Birth of Erhu concerto Since the 20th century, Erhu concerto born under multi-culture development is a kind of new music expression form. It derives from European music, but is different from European music. In 1930s, Erhu divertimento The Death of Yang Yuhuan created by Russian Jewish composer AapoHABUiajiyMOB (1894-1965) consists of 6 songs and adopts the form of Erhu and symphony orchestra. This is the earliest Erhu concerto recorded in the history and originated from the melody of self-created song Evening Scene of Ynag Yuhuan in 1936. In Yearbook of Chinese Music (2002), Mr. Zheng Tisi said in his memoirs that, this works was performed in public in Shanghai Lanxin Theater. The band was Shanghai Municipal Council Orchestra. The outstanding folk music performer Mr. Wei Zhonglei took charge of Erhu solo, and the composer was responsible for commanding. Such manifestation pattern of Erhu music was certain far-sighted in the development of world music and also reflected world culture had walked out of European cultural circle and went to other developing countries.
