  • From Folktale to Fantasy
From Folktale to Fantasy A Recipe-Based Approach to Creative Writing Michael Fox ABSTRACT In an environment of increasing strategies for creative writing “lessons” with varying degrees of constraints – ideas like the writing prompt, fash fction, and “uncreative” writing – one overlooked idea is to work with folktale types and motifs in order to create a story outline. Tis article sketches how such a lesson might be constructed, beginning with the selection of a tale type for the broad arc of the story, then moving to the range of individual motifs which might be available to populate that arc. Advanced students might further consider using the parallel and chiastic structures of folktale to sophisticate their outline. Te example used here – and suggested for use – is a folktale which informs both Beowulf and Te Hobbit and which, therefore, is likely at least to a certain extent to be familiar to many writers. Even if the outline which this exercise gen- erates were never used to write a full story, the process remains useful in thinking about the building blocks of story and traditional structures such as the archetypal “Hero’s Journey.” Writing in Practice 131 Introduction If the terms “motif” and “folktale” are unfamiliar, I am working with the following defnitions: a motif, I teach on the Writing side of a Department in terms of folklore, is “the smallest element in a tale of English and Writing Studies. I trained as a having a power to persist in tradition. In order to medievalist, but circumstances led me to a unit have this power, it must have something unusual and which teaches a range of courses from introductory striking about it” (Tompson 1977: 415).

  • Planescape Part One: Sigil by Cutter
Planescape Part One: Sigil By Cutter Welcome to Sigil, the City of Doors! The centre of the Planes and the local multiverse too. Sitting on the inside of a giant torus that itself floats above an infinitely tall mountain at the centre of the very plane of neutrality itself – the Concordant Domains of the Outlands. Here neutrality is enforced. Gods are barred from the city, and the Lady of Pain takes very aggressive steps to make sure nobody drags Sigil into the troubles outside. It is even a haven from the Blood War. Unfortunately, this means many, many criminals and troublemakers from outside land come here as a last resort. ‘Course, not everyone’s here of their own free choice. Sigil’s ridded in doors to other planes, and sometimes a local from outside falls in. What got them in Sigil rarely is what gets them out of Sigil, and they’re stuck here until they find a door back home. These planar doors all throughout Sigil would make it the most valuable place in the multiverse to hold. Master Sigil, you can master the Planes. But the Lady won’t let that happen. Piss her off and the best thing you can hope for is being locked in an extradimensional maze unable to die of age, hunger, or thirst. The unlucky ones get flayed alive in an instant. But on the bright side, you’ll see all kinds of things in Sigil. A devil and a demon (don’t call ‘em that, trust me) having friendly drinks in a bar.

Chris:Chris:Chris: First off, let me thank you for agreeing to do Mark:Mark:Mark: Hmm…the first things I want to know are a) this. I’m sure that many Mordheim enthusiasts are concept and b) deadline. If there isn’t a set deadline I hungry for insights, thoughts and the viewing points give myself one, because that gives me a goal, and in from an insider, so to speak. my experience, projects without set goals tend to wander. Then I build a rough development schedule Developing tabletop games and being paid for it based on the deadline: I figure out how much time I sounds like a dream job. It seems comparable to have to do roughs, how much time I have to playtest, computer games leading children to study computer how much time I have for final cuts. science instead of other more boring subjects. So how did you become a game developer for Games After I have a basic structure I think about the concept Workshop? and brainstorm ideas. • The Ultimate Mordheim Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) & Errata
The Ultimate Mordheim Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) & Errata This FAQ page tries to cover the possible questions and answers that Mordheim players might have. Some things might not be clearly written in the rulebook, there are some typos in the rulebook as well. Since its original author, Honza Skýpala, last updated his brilliant work in March 29, 2001, I have decided to revise his work with other FAQs I have found from several sources, including the Official Mordheim site at the Specialist Games. Of course some people value the "official" answers, i.e. answers from Games Workshop. Some of answers here are not official and so are only recommended to use. These answers are not the brilliant thoughts of mine - in fact they are the most common answers for that question from E-groups Mordheim mail list. Some questions and answers are copied from other material, like Games Workshop Official Mordheim's FAQ, Mordheim Yahoo! eGroups' FAQ and maybe some others. These are present here for completeness and I respect the fact that they were written by somebody else. I hope these people don't mind including them here. Answer is always completed with information of the source of answer. If somebody disagrees with including his answer and/or name on these pages, please write me and I will (unwillingly) remove it. This is updated FAQ is done in no attempt to take credit for the new compilation, but in an effort to make sure that there is an updated FAQ around. This of me as the keeper of the knowledge, never as his author.

  • Shrek Audition Monologues
Shrek Audition Monologues Shrek: Once upon a time there was a little ogre named Shrek, who lived with his parents in a bog by a tree. It was a pretty nasty place, but he was happy because ogres like nasty. On his 7th birthday the little ogre’s parents sat him down to talk, just as all ogre parents had for hundreds of years before. Ahh, I know it’s sad, very sad, but ogres are used to that – the hardships, the indignities. And so the little ogre went on his way and found a perfectly rancid swamp far away from civilization. And whenever a mob came along to attack him he knew exactly what to do. Rooooooaaaaar! Hahahaha! Fiona: Oh hello! Sorry I’m late! Welcome to Fiona: the Musical! Yay, let’s talk about me. Once upon a time, there was a little princess named Fiona, who lived in a Kingdom far, far away. One fateful day, her parents told her that it was time for her to be locked away in a desolate tower, guarded by a fire-breathing dragon- as so many princesses had for hundreds of years before. Isn’t that the saddest thing you’ve ever heard? A poor little princess hidden away from the world, high in a tower, awaiting her one true love Pinocchio: (Kid or teen) This place is a dump! Yeah, yeah I read Lord Farquaad’s decree. “ All fairytale characters have been banished from the kingdom of Duloc. All fruitcakes and freaks will be sent to a resettlement facility.” Did that guard just say “Pinocchio the puppet”? I’m not a puppet, I’m a real boy! Man, I tell ya, sometimes being a fairytale creature sucks pine-sap! Settle in, everyone.
