Retreat. ith the birth of the Casa Colombo Collection and “I am concentrating on properties along the coast in the Mirissa Lalin Residences, CCCMirissa opened its doors on and Weligama areas where I acquire the land and build villas purely the south coast in December 2015 offering guests for sale as there are a lot of people who like to have property along a unique experience of the best our shores have to the coast but don’t like the complications involved in the building Woffer. A completely different design angle to CCC process” 4 TOP PROPERTIES TOP PROPERTIES 5 TOP PROPERTIES Feature Feature TOP PROPERTIES The clients get a readymade villa with a clear title in their name and have the option of converting it into a rentable space where CCC could manage and operate it as part of the CCC cluster. This gives owners a return on investment without the hassle of marketing and running the villa. “My forte is in designing and many people don’t know that I am involved in a somewhat different type of architectural design concept which is my main strength, but at the same time Lalin Residencies provides a much sought after service to both locals and expatriates who are looking to own a villa on the coast” 6 TOP PROPERTIES TOP PROPERTIES 7 TOP PROPERTIES Feature Feature TOP PROPERTIES Lalin has been involved with architectural work with the restoration of old ‘wallauwa’ style properties and both renovation and reconstruction of already existing houses for a while. “Apart form the villas, I have also purchased a few old wallauwa’s located a little more inland, which I am in the process of restoring in order to make it viable for clients who are interested in them” The design layout emphasis is on clean lines with maximum space utilization to give the villa a spacious look and feel while keeping maintenance to the minimum. The primary reason for veering away from expansive gardens and hard to maintain design spaces is because most clients like to have a holiday home or weekend getaway where the need for a full time housekeeper is not necessary. There are a few designs to choose from and it can be either 4 of 4 plus bedrooms, which is 4500 sq. feet. Then there is another design, which is approximately 2500 sq.feet, which is 4 bedrooms with the land area being 15-20 perches or 7-10 perches. The target for completion and handing over is approximately 8months to one year. The property on which the first villa is being constructed has an amazing view of the Weligama bay and the ocean, as it is located on elevation with easy access to the beach and your own private bay. While the development is not being done on a large scale, the emphasis is on the uniqueness of each villa along with having the flexibility of changing some of the basic design lines to cater to the client’s individual requirement. The fittings and finishes are done with the clients specifications in mind but having the expertise of the professionals is the added advantage of adding value to your investment. Another noteworthy mention is that each villa will have the Lalin Residencies brand, which has its own unique value apart from the appreciation of property along the south coast of Sri Lanka. 8 TOP PROPERTIES TOP PROPERTIES 9 TOP PROPERTIES Feature Mirissa, the newest addition to the Casa Colombo Collection opened its doors in December 2014. “A very close friend completed building his house and waned me to take a look at it with an idea of converting it into a boutique hotel. I saw the potential, as it is a rather expansive villa so we took over the completed structure, which was basically the shell of the property and within a little over a month, converted it into a 6-suite boutique hotel”. There is also an independent restaurant, which is open to the public serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Casa Colombo CollectionMirissa follows the same ethos as Casa Colombo which boasts a combination of beautifully appointed rooms/ suites, exceptional personalized service and a selection of exquisite food and beverage options. All suites have been styled with intricate attention to detail in design and comfort. Ceylon Civil Service. AMtMICAN CEYLON MISSION ^RCSS. TELLIPPALAI. CtYLON 1920 DS 1^41 <i^ DEDICATION Dear Lady Blake, I have written this book in the hope that it will awaken in those of your fellow country- men and fellow countrywomen whose hands it may chance to reach, an interest in Ceylon and a desire to understand her people. In that respect you and Sir Henry have set a shining example, and in grate- ful recognition I venture respectfully to dedicate this work to you» Yours sincerely, Kandy, 3rd June. 1920. P» E. PIERIS, "Son of nmn, stand upon thy feet." PREFACE The period of the history cf Ceylon which is covered by the present work has been already dealt with by me in another book which, inasmuch as it was addressed primarily to the people of that country, assumed in the reader a degres of knowledge which no one who has not resided there for many years can have, and was hurdemed with a minuteness of detail which, however novel and interesting to the local student, cannot but weary, if not repel, the general reader„ And yet the story of the Portuguese in Ceylon is of more than local interest, for it depicts for us a characteristic phase of the beginning of European expansion in the East. A hundred and fifty three years after the Portuguese first landed in Ceylon they were expelled from the country, leaving the gloomy word Failure writ large over all their actions.
