Саме існування людини є благодаттю, бо відповідає волі Творця і дарується або присвоюється людині – творінню Божому. Віра в Христа – це засіб пізнання любові Божої. У вірі є сама сутність відродження. Віра, показуючи людині любов Божу, морально зближує людину з Богом. Віра людину відродила, розвивала і виховувала її в духовному житті, вона і приведе її до вічного блаженства. Вчення про віру і її значення у справі особистого спасіння має пряме і міцне обґрунтування у Св. Писанні та творах святих Отців. Ключові слова: Бог, віра, спасіння, людина, грішник, любов.     Religion, State & Society, Vo!. 29, No. 3, 2001 Aspects of the Religious Situation in Ukraine* NIKOLAI MITROKHIN During my stay in Kiev in May 1999 the political elite was shaken by the news that Patriarch Filaret (Denisenko), leader of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kiev Patriarchate (UOC-KP), had been assaulted when visiting Maryupil' in the Donets'k region on 30 April. The arrival of this patriarch, who had been anathematised by the Bishops' Council of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), had been met with many well-organised protests mounted by clergy and laypeople of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church belonging to the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). These protests had ended up in a brawl on a plot of land which Filaret had come to consecrate for the building of a new church. The few security guards present were unable to shield the head of the UOC-KP from physical contact with the noisy Maryupil' protesters, who first emptied a bucket of 'holy' water over his head and then started to beat him over the head with it. In the process they tore off his klobuk and panagiya and broke his crozier. This event evinced such a strong reaction because it rekindled memories of the fears many had expressed several years ago that a religious war might erupt in Ukraine. The religious situation in Ukraine is radically different from that in Russia. The main difference is that in Ukraine there is no single confession with a monopoly on the spiritual nurture of an historically Orthodox population. There are three 'pure' Orthodox churches rivalling for the souls of Ukrainians: the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) which according to figures dated I January 1999 has 7911 parishes, 6568 priests and 105 monasteries'; the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kiev Patriarchate (UOC-KP) which has 2178 parishes, 1743 priests and 17 monasteries; and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) which has 1022 parishes, 543 priests and 2 monasteries.

    Venerable Paisius Velichkovsky at the Kiev Theological Academy. The meanings of a choice Archim. PhD Student Damaschin LUCHIAN* Abstract: The article presents the reasons behind the establishment of the Kiev Theo- logical Academy as well as the specificity of the educational model employed therein, insisting upon a nuanced understanding of the influences of western mod- els regarded as sources of inspiration. The study goes on to examine aspects from the years spent by Venerable Paisius of Neamts as a student there and analyses the motivation he provided for leaving the Academy, as his own testimonies and subsequent activity showed him to be a true prophet of the need to resort to the pa- tristic heritage as the basis for an authentic Orthodox theology. The last part looks into the way the academic theology has assessed the neopatristic renewal program, highlighting the degree of contemporary relevance for other inspirational sources available to the East, in an effort to develop a theology faithful to Tradition and responsive to modern challenges. Chernikova Moscow State Institute of International Relations (University), 76 Prospect Vernadskogo, Moscow, 119454, Russia. The reign of Peter I paradoxically combined both the apogee of the might of the old patrimonial state and the accelerated westernization of the country. The article briefly analyzes some of the factors that strengthened the state patrimonial system: the con- sequences of the decree on the Unified Heritage of 1714 and the expansion of serfdom due to the appearance of new categories of serfs. To a greater extent, the article is devoted to the study of accelerated Westernization in Russia under Peter the Great. It resulted in the curtailment of the patrimonial way of life in Russia. The article focuses on the emergence of a new worldview doctrine. It considers vari- ous forms through which the formation of new understandings of social structures, culture, system of power and life in general took place. Such new practices as utter- ing panegyrics in honor of the monarch and his policies, public celebration of military victories (the organization of the so-called «Triumphs») and the church reforms greatly contributed to the formation of the new worldview. One of the vivid figures exemplify- ing it was Theophan Prokopovich. In the first quarter of the 18th century westernization came to Russia directly from West- ern Europe. It removed all barriers to direct communication between Russians and foreigners, discredited the old ecclesiastical postulate that all Western Christians were “heretics”, paved the way for the beginning of internal modernization as well as for the tragic fate of the socio-cultural split in Russia between the upper educated social strata and the bulk of the Russian population that remained in the Middle Ages.

It is not some secondary life-style, episodic, diminished or reduced to quaint happenings. It has a life of its own, unique, total and day-to-day, both material and moral. Pierre Pascal, La civilation paysanne en Russie (1937) The above was written 60 years ago. Much has changed. The majority of Russians today live in urban conditions. The village is dying. But the mass exodus from the countryside began during the lifetime of the parents of today’s young adults. With the exception of the intelligentsia and the thin stratum of skilled workers and technicians, the mass of city-dwellers carry with them the legacy of ‘peasant civilization’. This is especially true in the provinces, where ‘cities’ exist more in name than in fact. The psychological weight of the peasant legacy is evident in the popular reaction to ‘market reforms’. Pièrre Pascal was perhaps Pre-War Europe’s greatest ‘Russian expert’. For him, understanding Russia meant knowing Russian peasant civilization, which in turn meant knowing about the Old Ritualists, the cultural and spiritual vanguard of the peasantry. The importance of Old Ritualists in the preservation of Russian traditions is tacitly recognized by field workers in ethnography and folklore, since it is among Old Ritualists that peasant soci- ety and culture survive in their most complete and unspoiled forms. ‘Tacitly’, because in Soviet times it was forbidden to write about Old Ritual- ist communities. Rylsky Institute of Art, Folklore Studies and Ethnology, Kiev, Ukraine [email protected] The Kiev Theological Academy (KTA; officially established 28 September 1819 on the basis of the disbanded Kiev-Mohyla Academy), the only Ukrainian establishment offering higher theological education, played a very significant role in the development and preservation of the national tradition of spiritual choral music. Yet the high quality of the Academy’s Choir was achieved after a serious crisis which led to the strict regulation of the choristers’ spare time and the prohibition of singing without printed scores. Singing folk songs and practicing music outside the Academy were prohibited as well. In the past, these aspects of the students’ life had not only provided an organic connection with their environment but had also helped new music spread. Moreover, they allowed new elements to enter traditional choral performance. Many poor choristers walked the streets of Kiev every day during dinner time […] singing sacred verses […]. Even the students who studied higher disciplines were not ashamed to sing in choirs like the younger ones and to glorify different saints and miraculous icons in that way, creating their own parts (”partes”). […] And such singing continued not just for one or two or three years, but for a whole century, from year to year!1 As a result of the standardization of education in the Russian Empire, the former thriving choral singing tradition, flavoured with national features, gradually diminished.
