ABSTRACT The Apostolic Tradition in the Ecclesiastical Histories of Socrates, Sozomen, and Theodoret Scott A. Rushing, Ph.D. Mentor: Daniel H. Williams, Ph.D. This dissertation analyzes the transposition of the apostolic tradition in the fifth-century ecclesiastical histories of Socrates, Sozomen, and Theodoret. In the early patristic era, the apostolic tradition was defined as the transmission of the apostles’ teachings through the forms of Scripture, the rule of faith, and episcopal succession. Early Christians, e.g., Irenaeus, Tertullian, and Origen, believed that these channels preserved the original apostolic doctrines, and that the Church had faithfully handed them to successive generations. The Greek historians located the quintessence of the apostolic tradition through these traditional channels. However, the content of the tradition became transposed as a result of three historical movements during the fourth century: (1) Constantine inaugurated an era of Christian emperors, (2) the Council of Nicaea promulgated a creed in 325 A.D., and (3) monasticism emerged as a counter-cultural movement. Due to the confluence of these sweeping historical developments, the historians assumed the Nicene creed, the monastics, and Christian emperors into their taxonomy of the apostolic tradition. For reasons that crystallize long after Nicaea, the historians concluded that pro-Nicene theology epitomized the apostolic message. They accepted the introduction of new vocabulary, e.g. homoousios, as the standard of orthodoxy. In addition, the historians commended the pro- Nicene monastics and emperors as orthodox exemplars responsible for defending the apostolic tradition against the attacks of heretical enemies. The second chapter of this dissertation surveys the development of the apostolic tradition. -

An Analysis of the Contributions of the Medieval Muslim Scholars to Medical Science
Manarat International University Studies, 5(1), 2015 ISLAM AND MODERN SCIENCE: AN ANALYSIS OF THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE MEDIEVAL MUSLIM SCHOLARS TO MEDICAL SCIENCE Dr. Muhammad Obaidullah ABSTRACT The primary objective of this paper is to depict the real-time contributions made by the Muslim scientists and researchers in the area of medical science during the medieval period. Many inscribed write-ups, books and Encyclopedias have been written and published on the various areas of medical science by the eminent Muslim scholars during the medieval period. It is acknowledged by the prominent scientists, historians and philosophers that the contributions of Muslim researchers prevalently shaped the science and philosophy into the form that we see it today. However, there is a tendency in the western society to ignore the contribution of Muslim scientists in the historical development of medical science. Western writers have given little prominence to Islamic Scientific and intellectual contributions to this field. But the fact is that the Muslims carried the torch of science in an age when no other civilization was capable of doing so. The current study would also shed light on the underlying reasons as to why Muslims today are not able to contribute to the development of sciences including the medical science like their golden age. This will conclude by furnishing some suggestions to improve the current devastating state of Muslims in the development of sciences. Anadolu, Suriye, Lübnan ve Filistin kıyılarında yaşanan dikkat çekici gelişmelerin gerekçeleri hakkında net yanıtlar verilememektedir. Bazı bilim insanları Roma lejyonlarının Doğu Akdeniz’deki üretim hacmini arttırdığı ve ekonomiye hatırı sayılır bir canlılık kazandırdığı üzerinde durmaktadır. Ancak askerî seferler her bölgede aynı ekonomik kalkınmaya neden olmamıştır. Kilikia bölgesinde özellikle MS 4 ile erken 7. yy.’lar arasında gözlenen gelişmeler de, ciddi bir ekonomik hareketliliğin yaşandığına işaret etmekte ve tüm Doğu Akdeniz’in merak uyandıran bu problemine ışık tutabilecek önemli ipuçları barındırmaktadır. Bölgenin sahillerinde ortaya çıkan yeni yerleşimler; tarımsal üretim yapan çiftliklerin ve kırsal yerleşimlerin anormal ölçüde çoğalması ile inşa edilen kiliselerin sayısındaki artış, bu ekonomik hareketliliğin en somut yansımaları arasında gösterilebilir. Bu gelişmelerin yanı sıra antik dünyanın hemen her noktasında bulunan ve aynı zaman dilimine ait olan Kilikia kökenli LR1 amphoralarının üretiminde de bir patlama yaşanmıştır. Bölgede, Roma ve Erken Bizans Dönemi’nde nasıl bir siyasi ve ticari tablo ile karşılaşılmaktadır? Ayrıca LR1 amphoralarının bu denli geniş bir coğrafyaya yayılması nasıl ve kimler vasıtasıyla olmuştur? Adana ve Mersin illerinin sınırları içindeki antik kentler, tüm Doğu Akdeniz’i ilgilendiren bu çözümlenememiş probleme yanıt olabilecek ipuçları barındırmaktadır. Özellikle Anazarbus kentinin kuruluşu, Aegeai ve Tarsus kentleriyle birlikte bölgede nasıl bir ticari misyon üstlendiği irdelenecek ve konuya ışık tutulmaya çalışılacaktır. -

THE HISTORY OF ARABIC SCIENCES: A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY Mohamed ABATTOUY Fez University Max Planck Institut für Wissenschaftsgeschichte, Berlin A first version of this bibliography was presented to the Group Frühe Neuzeit (Max Planck Institute for History of Science, Berlin) in April 1996. I revised and expanded it during a stay of research in MPIWG during the summer 1996 and in Fez (november 1996). During the Workshop Experience and Knowledge Structures in Arabic and Latin Sciences, held in the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin on December 16-17, 1996, a limited number of copies of the present Bibliography was already distributed. Finally, I express my gratitude to Paul Weinig (Berlin) for valuable advice and for proofreading. PREFACE The principal sources for the history of Arabic and Islamic sciences are of course original works written mainly in Arabic between the VIIIth and the XVIth centuries, for the most part. A great part of this scientific material is still in original manuscripts, but many texts had been edited since the XIXth century, and in many cases translated to European languages. In the case of sciences as astronomy and mechanics, instruments and mechanical devices still extant and preserved in museums throughout the world bring important informations. A total of several thousands of mathematical, astronomical, physical, alchemical, biologico-medical manuscripts survived. They are written mainly in Arabic, but some are in Persian and Turkish. The main libraries in which they are preserved are those in the Arabic World: Cairo, Damascus, Tunis, Algiers, Rabat ... as well as in private collections. Beside this material in the Arabic countries, the Deutsche Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, the Biblioteca del Escorial near Madrid, the British Museum and the Bodleian Library in England, the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, the Süleymaniye and Topkapi Libraries in Istanbul, the National Libraries in Iran, India, Pakistan.. -
Calendar of Roman Events
Introduction Steve Worboys and I began this calendar in 1980 or 1981 when we discovered that the exact dates of many events survive from Roman antiquity, the most famous being the ides of March murder of Caesar. Flipping through a few books on Roman history revealed a handful of dates, and we believed that to fill every day of the year would certainly be impossible. From 1981 until 1989 I kept the calendar, adding dates as I ran across them. In 1989 I typed the list into the computer and we began again to plunder books and journals for dates, this time recording sources. Since then I have worked and reworked the Calendar, revising old entries and adding many, many more. The Roman Calendar The calendar was reformed twice, once by Caesar in 46 BC and later by Augustus in 8 BC. Each of these reforms is described in A. K. Michels’ book The Calendar of the Roman Republic. In an ordinary pre-Julian year, the number of days in each month was as follows: 29 January 31 May 29 September 28 February 29 June 31 October 31 March 31 Quintilis (July) 29 November 29 April 29 Sextilis (August) 29 December. The Romans did not number the days of the months consecutively. They reckoned backwards from three fixed points: The kalends, the nones, and the ides. The kalends is the first day of the month. For months with 31 days the nones fall on the 7th and the ides the 15th. For other months the nones fall on the 5th and the ides on the 13th. -

Box: (144211) Amman (11814) Jordan Abstract Remarkable development was recorded by Seville under the spell of Islamic rule, first under the Umayyad dynasty, then under the Almoravids and thereafter under the Almohad rulers. The Umayyad rulers transformed the city from the Roman-Gothic vestiges into a thriving city pulsating with economic, commercial and cultural activities. Special attention was paid by the Umayyad rulers maintain defence of the city and ensure all-round progress its people. Under the Almoravid rule, Seville seldom witnessed any noticeable development activity. However, the Almohad rulers revived the development dynamics by constructing buildings, improving public infrastructure and facilities for the people. Multifaceted development attained by Seville, especially under the Umayyad rule, earned it the appellation of “Peal of Andalusia”. Keywords : Seville, Andalusia, Umayyad’s, Almoravids, Almohads 1. Abulhab (City University of New York) April, 2020 The key aspect of my readings of the texts of ancient Near East languages stems from my evidence-backed conclusion that these languages should be classified and read as early Arabic. I will explore here this central point by replying to a new theory with an opposite understanding of early Arabia and the Arabic language, put forth by Ahmad al-Jallad, a scholar of ancient Near East languages and scripts. In a recent debate with al-Jallad, a self-described Semitic linguist, he proclaimed that exchanging the term 'Semitic' for ‘early Arabic’ or ‘early fuṣḥā’ is “simply a matter of nomenclature.”1 While his interpretation of the term Semitic sounds far more moderate than that of most Western philologists and epigraphists, it is not only fundamentally flawed and misleading, but also counterproductive. Most scholars, unfortunately, continue to misinform their students and the scholarly community by alluding to a so-called Semitic mother language, as a scientific fact.
