According to the authors of a popular primer, history represents a collective memory that provides an awareness of past events, helping us shape our present and future.1 History has great practical signif- icance, notes another academic, because “intelligent action” draws on past experience.2 As a consequence of the way pedagogues extol the relevance of their work, many high-school students can paraphrase Santayana’s dictum that “[t]hose who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”3 Despite widespread acceptance of the notion that history provides tan- gible benefits, historians usually remain reluctant to apply “lessons” to real- world situations, especially in the realms of public and business policy. Eager to be viewed as unbiased, dispassionate observers of events, most aca- demic historians seem happy to write primarily for their peers. -

Playing (with) Sound Of the Animation of Digitized Sounds and their Reenactment by Playful Scenarios in the Design of Interactive Audio Applications Dissertation by Norbert Schnell Submitted for the degree of Doktor der Philosophie Supervised by Prof. Gerhard Eckel Prof. Rolf Inge Godøy Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, Austria October 2013 Abstract Investigating sound and interaction, this dissertation has its foundations in over a decade of practice in the design of interactive audio applications and the development of software tools supporting this design practice. The concerned applications are sound installations, digital in- struments, games, and simulations. However, the principal contribution of this dissertation lies in the conceptualization of fundamental aspects in sound and interactions design with recorded sound and music. The first part of the dissertation introduces two key concepts, animation and reenactment, that inform the design of interactive audio applications. While the concept of animation allows for laying out a comprehensive cultural background that draws on influences from philosophy, science, and technology, reenactment is investigated as a concept in interaction design based on recorded sound materials. Even if rarely applied in design or engineering – or in the creative work with sound – the no- tion of animation connects sound and interaction design to a larger context of artistic practices, audio and music technologies, engineering, and philosophy. Starting from Aristotle’s idea of the soul, the investigation of animation follows the parallel development of philosophical con- cepts (i.e. soul, mind, spirit, agency) and technical concepts (i.e. mechanics, automation, cybernetics) over many centuries. -

Everyday Life Information Seeking Reijo Savolainen Department of Information Studies and Interactive Media, University of Tampere, Tampere, Finland Folksonomies Ethiopia– Abstract Information seeking may be analyzed in two major contexts: job-related and nonwork. The present entry concentrates on nonwork information seeking, more properly called everyday life information seeking (ELIS). Typically, ELIS studies discuss the ways in which people access and use various information sources to meet information needs in areas such as health, consumption, and leisure. The entry specifies the concept of ELIS and characterizes the major ELIS models. They include the Sense-Making approach (Dervin), the Small world theory (Chatman), the ecological model of ELIS (Williamson), ELIS in the context of way of life (Savolainen), the model of information practices (McKenzie), and the concept of information grounds (Fisher). ELIS practices tend to draw on the habitualized use of a limited number of sources which have been found useful in previous use contexts. Since the late 1990s, the Internet has increasingly affected the ELIS practices by providing easily accessible sources. Even though the popularity of the networked sources has grown rapidly they will complement, rather than replace, more traditional sources and channels. Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Abstract Recognized nationally as the funk capital of the world, Dayton, Ohio takes credit for birthing important funk groups (i.e. Ohio Players, Zapp, Heatwave, and Lakeside) during the 1970s and 80s. Through a combination of ethnographic and archival research, this paper offers a pedagogical approach to Dayton funk, rooted in the styles and works of the city’s funk legacy. Drawing from fieldwork with Dayton funk musicians completed over the summer of 2019 and pedagogical theories of including black music in the school curriculum, this paper presents a pedagogical model for funk instruction that introduces the ingredients of funk (instrumentation, form, groove, and vocals) in order to enable secondary school music programs to create their own funk rooted in local history. -

Black Thesis dated July 2008 This research examined popular funk music as the social and political voice of African Americans during the era of the seventies. The objective of this research was to reveal the messages found in the lyrics as they commented on the climate of the times for African Americans of that era. A content analysis method was used to study the lyrics of popular funk music. This method allowed the researcher to scrutinize the lyrics in the context of their creation. When theories on the black vernacular and its historical roles found in African-American literature and music respectively were used in tandem with content analysis, it brought to light the voice of popular funk music of the seventies. This research will be useful in terms of using popular funk music as a tool to research the history of African Americans from the seventies to the present. The research herein concludes that popular funk music lyrics espoused the sentiments of the African-American community as it utilized a culturally familiar vernacular and prose to express the evolving sociopolitical themes amid the changing conditions of the seventies era. Jérémie Kroubo Dagnini ([email protected]) is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Anglophone Studies at the University Michel de Montaigne Bordeaux 3 in France, conducting research on the history of Jamaican popular music in the twentieth century. He is the author of Les origines du reggae: retour aux sources. Mento, ska, rocksteady, early reggae published by L’Harmattan in 2008. Abstract Afrocentrism is an intellectual, political, sociological, historical and cultural movement principally born out of Black people’s constant struggle against racism and oppression. Thus, this ideology dates back to the era of slavery and was born in the Black diaspora as a response to Eurocentrism which views the world from a European perspective, implying superiority of Europeans and more generally Westerners, namely Whites, over non-Europeans, namely non- Whites, especially Blacks. The United States of America being an ancient land of slavery, it is not surprising that Afrocentrism emerged within its society. It has been notably significant from the late 19th onwards and has impacted on different aspects of social life, including literature, politics, religion, economy, sport and music. Since the 1960’s, Afrocentrism has been particularly visible through music which has become an obvious new force in America. Indeed, in the 1960’s, it was an integral part of soul music which accompanied the civil rights movements. Then, it has integrated most genres which followed up such as funk, rap and modern rhythm and blues. -

The Funky Diaspora: The Diffusion of Soul and Funk Music across The Caribbean and Latin America Thomas Fawcett XXVII Annual ILLASA Student Conference Feb. 1-3, 2007 Introduction In 1972, a British band made up of nine West Indian immigrants recorded a funk song infused with Caribbean percussion called “The Message.” The band was Cymande, whose members were born in Jamaica, Guyana, and St. Vincent before moving to England between 1958 and 1970.1 In 1973, a year after Cymande recorded “The Message,” the song was reworked by a Panamanian funk band called Los Fabulosos Festivales. The Festivales titled their fuzzed-out, guitar-heavy version “El Mensaje.” A year later the song was covered again, this time slowed down to a crawl and set to a reggae beat and performed by Jamaican singer Tinga Stewart. This example places soul and funk music in a global context and shows that songs were remade, reworked and reinvented across the African diaspora. It also raises issues of migration, language and the power of music to connect distinct communities of the African diaspora. Soul and funk music of the 1960s and 1970s is widely seen as belonging strictly in a U.S. context. This paper will argue that soul and funk music was actually a transnational and multilingual phenomenon that disseminated across Latin America, the Caribbean and beyond. Soul and funk was copied and reinvented in a wide array of Latin American and Caribbean countries including Brazil, Panama, Jamaica, Belize, Peru and the Bahamas. This paper will focus on the music of the U.S., Brazil, Panama and Jamaica while highlighting the political consciousness of soul and funk music.
