Statement by Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, the Berlin City Hall STATEMEN'r BY ATrORNEY GENERAL ROBERT F. KENNEDY THE BERLIN CITY HALL STEPS, FEBRUARY 22, 1962 Mr. Mayor, General Clay and my friends in Berlin: Over the past few weeks my wife and I have traveled many thousands of miles across the United States, across the Pacific ocean, from JapB.n along the Chinese coast, down to Indonesia, across the Indian Sea, acrOES Pakistan, up through the Middle East, through Italy, and noW' we arrive in tee free city of Berlin. Nothing we have seen has touched us as much as your reception to us here tod~. The warmth of your greeting will always remain indelibly in our hearts. and the message it· gives is one that I will report back to the American people. For we know that this reception is a sign of your friendship towards the American people. And I want to report to you that 1 t 1s re clprocated: friendship and affection for the people of Berlin and the ad- ILliration of your great courage. So I am. proud to be here in the City of Berlin. This is my third visit to your city. I came here first in 1948 during the Berlin airlift. It vas when Berliners and Americans were standil".g side by side. Gen.eral Clay and your mayor, Ernst Reuter, were stand..i.ng shoulder to shoulder when the Communists were attempting to bring·the proud City of Berlin to its knp.es. On that trip I traveled not only to West Berlin but to CCITI. m\uUst East Berlin, and the contrast betWeen communism and freedom vas there for all to see. And I saw it for myself. But on my return ba.ck here in 1955, I came from a long trip to the Soviet Union and. I came here to West Berlin and saw your plea.sant streets and gay shops .and your fine people. And when I went over to East Berlin again it was like returning to a bad dream. (loud nOise, red balloons drop~ed red flags) ':rhe Commnni.sto villlet the balloons through but they won't let their people through. I have seen the contrast between this city in the west part and 1n the Communist part as many hundreds of thousands of people have seen that contrast. And that is why Herr Ulbricht had to erect the wtUJ... Because it wa.s a contrast that he could not tolerate. That is the true meaning of the wall that lies like a snake across the heart of your city. Mr. Ulbricht and the Communists cannot have the contrast. (another loud noise j tvo more red flags dropped by parachute from small balloons) ••.•• That is the only thing that he can do • . He cannot tolerate the contrast between freedom here and COl1lmUn1S111 over there so that everyone can see it. He has to do that. We are aware of the heartbreak and anguish this wal.l has caused to tbe people of Berlin. But I would also ask you to look at the other side and see What an impression 1t has made all across the rest of the globe. Because this wall is an admission of fa1lur~ by Communism, it is an attempt for the first time in the history of mankind to erect a wall not to keep marauders or bandits out, but to keep their people in. This is understood every place. I was in Indonesia and talked to a - - - -----. ---- ~ ~ -- -- - -- --~- ~--~ - 3 young Communist student. And he wa.s saying that the Communists regimes throughout the world were supported by the people.. And I asked him: I sa.id, "well, how can you explain the waJ.l in Berlin'l" He blushed for a moment, and he said: "I don't want to get into details. It And this incident has been re:peated over and over aga.in in my travels. If the purpose ot the wall was to destroy Berlin, Herr Ulbricht and his cohorts have erred sadly. Berlin is not only going to.continue to exist --- it's going to grow and grow and grow. Its ties to West Germany will not be severed.. Companies from America and other foreign countries will erect their plants here. Corporations from allover the globe are going to open outlets in this city. West Berlin's brightest pages have yet to be written in the books of history. And Berlin, although on the ~dge of totalitarianism, will not be attacked, because an armed atta.ek on West Berlin is the same as an armed attack on Chicago, or New York,. or London, or Paris. You are our brothers a.nd we stand by you. And noW' I have a message from President Kennedy to you of free Eerlin. It is to Mayor Brandt, the Senate and. the people of West Berlin. "I am. delighted to send my wa.rme st greetings to the people of 'West Berlin through my brother, The Attorney General of the United States. His visit to Berlin is one more testimonial to the ties that bind your city and the America.n people. I am grateful to you for having invited him, and the message which he brings is the message of American solidarity with the tree people of West Berlin. The courage and determination of the people of your grea.t city are a constant inspiration to free men everywhere. Our people and yours ha.ve stood firm for freedom in the years that lie behind us; together with other determined :peoples we shall sustain both freedom and peace in tbe L years ahead." " .

  • Ernst Reuter

The funding shall enable FUB and SPSU faculty and researchers to identify complementary strengths, facilitate the use of synergies, increase joint research, high level publications, academic mobility, and promote the development of outstanding future research projects. The joint funding scheme with an annual budget of € 40.000 (equivalent in roubles, respectively) aims at supporting the first steps of research collaboration. The following formats are possible: • Intensive research workshops • Short term research stays (for young as well as established researchers) • Research-oriented teaching / short intensive graduate seminars • Mobility for the preparation of joint research proposals The supported activities should have a clearly defined focus and serve as a catalyst for the development of new joint projects. The activities can take place in Berlin or in Saint Petersburg; participants should include both senior and junior faculty/researchers of FUB and SPSU. Maximum funding per proposal is € 10.000 (equivalent in roubles respectively). • Calibration of Artificial Athlete Berlin/Stuttgart Summary Of
Calibration of Artificial Athlete Berlin/Stuttgart Summary of Calibration Series Performed in 2000 1. Introduction and Rational The Artificial Athletes Berlin and Stuttgart were developed by the FMPA Stuttgart (Otto-Graf- Institut) of the University of Stuttgart around 1970. The tests, which are specified in the German standards DIN 18035-6 "Sports Grounds; Synthetic Surfaced Areas" and DIN 18032-2 "Sports Halls; Sports Surfaces – Requirements, Testing, Maintenance",. and have been adopted by various national and international bodies (FIH, IAAF, ASTM, ITF, CEN, FIFA, UEFA). Over the years, especially the past 10 years, modifications to these DIN standards have taken place, which were at times inconsistent, resulting in major questions and concerns regarding the proper design of the test apparatus, the test procedure, the evaluation of measurements and the accuracy of the test results. The IAAF Accredited Labs of the ISSS felt that the resolution of these uncertainties was crucial and, based on the lack of response by the DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung = German Institute of Standardization) to professional advice, took the initiative themselves to clarify the problems involved. As a first step, the ISSS called for papers analysing the structure of the Artificial Athletes and providing solutions for the pending problems. The submitted papers were received from Mark Harrison (GB), Dr. Konrad Binder (A), Dr. John Dunlop (AU) and Hans J. Kolitzus (D). The papers were published on ISSS's website www.isss.de. In a meeting held in Le Mans (F) in September 1999, the papers and problems were discussed in depth and a unanimous resolution was passed covering all open problems.
