    Trauma, Dissociation, and Amnesia: Myths and Reality in Cinema and Life A look at the psychological responses to trauma that include dissociation and amnesia, phenomena which are often misunderstood in the media and public perception. The objective is to determine what this history reveals about the changing roles of both the national language and national cinema in Ireland. The study of Irish- language film provides an illustrative and significant example of the participation of a minority perspective within a small national cinema. It is also illustrates the potential role of cinema in language maintenance and revitalization. Research is focused on policies and practices of filmmaking, with additional consideration given to film distribution, exhibition, and reception. Furthermore, films are analysed based on the strategies used by filmmakers to integrate the traditional Irish language with the modern medium of film, as well as their motivations for doing so. Research methods included archival work, textual analysis, personal interviews, and review of scholarly, popular, and trade publications. Case studies are offered on three movements in Irish-language film. First, the Irish- language organization Gael Linn produced documentaries in the 1950s and 1960s that promoted a strongly nationalist version of Irish history while also exacerbating the view of Irish as a “private discourse” of nationalism. Second, independent filmmaker Bob Quinn operated in the Irish-speaking area of Connemara in the 1970s; his fiction films from that era situated the regional affiliations of the language within the national context.

Forty-four of the 88 feature-length films were announced. The 10 th edition of the Festival will take place from April 20 to May 1 in lower Manhattan. TFF organizers this year have streamlined the Festival’s format, which is now comprised of two competition sections, World Narrative and World Documentary, and three out-of-competition sections: Cinemania, Spotlight and the new Viewpoints. “It’s our tenth Tribeca Film Festival, and in our relatively brief existence we have evolved dramatically,” says Nancy Schafer, Executive Director of the Tribeca Film Festival. “The Festival has become an integral part of the cultural landscape of New York City as well as a globally recognized platform for storytelling.” The 2011 film selection includes feature films from 32 different countries, including 43 World Premieres, 10 International Premieres, 19 North American Premieres, 7 U.S. Premieres and 9 New York Premieres. Ninety-nine directors will be presenting feature works at the Festival, with 54 of these filmmakers presenting their feature directorial debuts. Despite their different forms and eras, my subjects—the French playwright Molière (1622-1673), the English novelist Jane Austen (1775-1817), and the American screenwriter Nora Ephron (1941-2012)—arguably participate in the romantic comedy genre, and my analysis of their work seeks to reveal both genre mechanics and the nature of sociocultural evaluation. I suggest that Molière did indeed participate in the romantic comedy genre, and it is both gender politics and the high cultural prestige of his work (and the low cultural prestige of romantic comedy) that prevents this classification. I also suggest that popular interpretations of Austen’s work are driven by romanticised analysis (inseparable from popular culture), rather than the values implicit in the work, and that Ephron’s clever and conscious use of postmodern techniques is frequently overlooked. Further, my exegesis shows how parody provides a productive methodology for critically exploring genre, and an appropriate one, given that genre involves repetition—or parody—of conventions and their relationship to form.

    Short Synopsis After a single-mother (Carice van Houten) witnesses terrifying symptoms of demonic possession in her 11-year-old son (David Mazouz), a Vatican representative (Catalina Sandino Moreno) calls on wheelchair-bound scientist Dr. Seth Ember (Aaron Eckhart) to rid him of the evil spirit. Driven by a personal agenda rooted in his own tragic past, Ember enters the boy’s unconscious mind where he confronts a demon as ferocious as it is ingenious. Long Synopsis Eleven-year-old Cameron (David Mazouz) alarms his single mother Lindsay (Carice van Houten) when he begins isolating himself on the floor of his dark room, speaking in ancient languages and displaying other symptoms of demonic possession. Alerted to the situation, Vatican representative Camilla (Catalina Sandino Moreno) recruits wheelchair- bound scientist Dr. Seth Ember (Aaron Eckhart) to extract the evil spirit from the boy. A non-believer who drinks, smokes and prefers to think of his work as “eviction” rather than exorcism, Ember sets up shop with high-tech assistants Riley (Emily Jackson) and Oliver (Keir O’Donnell). Strapped into a life-support system, he enters Cameron’s subconscious mind, where the demon holds the boy captive in an imaginary dream world by appealing to his deepest desire: to be reunited with his estranged father Dan (Matt Nable). Driven by tragic events in his own traumatic past, Ember engages in a fierce battle with the crafty spirit. Ever mindful that the demon, known as “Maggie,” travels from one victim to the next through physical contact, Ember knows that his desperate attempt to save Cameron’s soul could make him the demon’s next host.
