Newton The Evergreen State College N e w t o n | 1 "During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act." --George Orwell The death of Joseph Stalin left the Soviet Union in a state of dynastic confusion, and the most repressive elements of the society he established remained. After Nikita Khrushchev secured power in the mid-1950s, he embarked on a campaign to vanquish these elements. While boldly denouncing Stalin’s cult of personality and individual authority in his ‘Secret Speech’ of 1956, he failed to address the problems of a system that allowed Stalin to take power and empowered legions of Stalin-enablers. Khrushchev’s problem was complex in that he wanted to appease the entire Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1956 and yet legitimize his position of power. The level of embeddedness of Stalinism in the Soviet Union was the biggest obstacle for Khrushchev. Characterized with the “permanent” infrastructure of the Soviet Union, Stalin’s autocratic rule was intertwined with virtually all aspects of Soviet life. These aspects can be broken down into four elements: Stalin’s status as an absolute champion of Communism, and his cult of personality; the enormous amount of propaganda in all forms that underlined Stalin as the “protector” of the Soviet Union during threat and impact of foreign war, and the censorship of any content that was not aligned with this mindset; the necessity and place of the Gulag prison camp in the Soviet economy, and how it sustained itself; and the transformation of Soviet society into something horrifically uniform and populated with citizens whom were universally fearful of arrest and arbitrary repression. -

Jordan Peterson It came from the Internet! From his heartfelt lectures, to his wild battles with academic leftists, to his enigmatic, all-beef diet (which is a real thing), YouTuber Jordan Peterson has captivated the minds of millions across the world, in person and online. He has especially drawn the notice of younger men with his mythological, scientific approach to moral life, so much so that Christian thinkers and leaders have struggled to understand the meaning of his rise to internet stardom. Responses to the Peterson phenomenon have been numerous and irreconcilable. Some call him a new conservative prophet, others a woman-hating prig. Still others call him an apologist for white supremacy and heteronormativity. Still others call him a hero of classical liberalism and champion of free speech and the open exchange of ideas. He’s even been called the high priest of our secular age. There has been so much talk about Peterson that it can be difficult to see through to the man himself and to know how to react if and when our teens become interested in the things he has to say. In this guide, we’ll get to know Jordan Peterson, as well as summarize and critique a few branches of his thinking from a Christian perspective. Our goal is to give you a deeper understanding of his thought, so that you can discuss him intelligently with your teenagers. In his native Russia, Pasternak's anthology My Sister Life, is one of the most influential collections ever published in the Russian language. Furthermore, Pasternak's theatrical translations of Goethe, Schiller, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, and William Shakespeare remain deeply popular with Russian audiences. Outside Russia, Pasternak is best known for authoring Doctor Zhivago, a novel which spans the last years of Czarist Russia and the earliest days of the Soviet Union. Banned in the USSR, Doctor Zhivago was smuggled to Milan and published in 1957. Pasternak was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature the following year, an event which both humiliated and enraged the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. In the midst of a massive campaign against him by both the KGB and the Union of Soviet Writers, Pasternak reluctantly agreed to decline the Prize. In his resignation letter to the Nobel Committee, Pasternak stated the reaction of the Soviet State was the only reason for his decision. By the time of his death from lung cancer in 1960, the campaign against Pasternak had severely damaged the international credibility of the U.S.S.R. He remains a major figure in Russian literature to this day. Furthermore, tactics pioneered by Pasternak were later continued, expanded, and refined by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and other Soviet dissidents. <b>Early Life</b> Pasternak was born in Moscow on 10 February, (Gregorian), 1890 (Julian 29 January) into a wealthy Russian Jewish family which had been received into the Russian Orthodox Church. -

Musically Russian: Nationalism in the Nineteenth Century What does it mean to be Russian? In the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Russian nobility was engrossed with French culture. According to Dr. Marina Soraka and Dr. Charles Ruud, “Russian nobility [had a] weakness for the fruits of French civilization.”1 When Peter the Great came into power in 1682-1725, he forced Western ideals and culture into the very way of life of the aristocracy. “He wanted to Westernize and modernize all of the Russian government, society, life, and culture… .Countries of the West served as the emperor’s model; but the Russian ruler also tried to adapt a variety of Western institutions to Russian needs and possibilities.”2 However, when Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Russia in 1812, he threw the pro- French aristocracy in Russia into an identity crisis. -

UNIVERSITY OF BELGRADE FACULTY OF POLITICAL SCIENCES Regional Master’s Program in Peace Studies Master’s Thesis Understanding the rise and the internationalisation of online alt-right’s subculture: how memes are changing political culture worldwide Author: Anesa Omeragić 515/16 Mentor: Professor Marina Simić Belgrade, September 2019 1 Abstract and keywords This paper examines the creation and the development of alt-right subculture, their language and behaviour. Alt-right was mainstreamed in 2016, and it is growing fast in the post-truth environment. Alt-right fights with stigmatisation that usually far-right movement face with the ironic and subtler language, rejection of the political correctness and use of jokes, sarcastic and nihilist approach and dark humour memes to spread their ideology. Alt-right members seem young, smart and exciting. They are gathering in board-based websites and/or forums that have little or no freedom of speech control. Lack of regulation and anonymity give them the opportunity to say what they mean, to spread the message and radicalise more. Alt-right online subculture was somewhat connected with rising of white supremacy’s violence globally in the past couple of years. Alt-right online subculture was especially compared with the four mass shootings or attempted mass shootings in the past six months – In Australia, Norway and the US. There is a danger that this trend of rising alt-right violence will continue. The public is not very- well informed about the alt-right community and its language, and it is essential to educate, especially youth, because of the danger of radicalisation. -

Raclawickie, 20-950 Lublin, Poland Received 11.02.2015, received in revised form 17.03.2015, accepted 16.04.2015 The present article tackles the artistic method used by Solzhenitsyn in his work “The Red Wheel”. The starting point for consideration is the writer’s statement that this work of art is not an ordinary historical novel and it realizes totally exceptional artistic goals. The author of the article proposes to analyze some of Solzhenitsyn’s theoretical explanations, which might have affected the specific character of the world presented in “The Red Wheel”. The research of those explanations makes it possible to figure out certain parallels between the concept of artistic perception of Solzhenitsyn’s world and classical reflections on the subject of tasks of literature and the role of an artist. An exceptional role in this system of literary values is played by the truth of literature understood as authentic historical evidence, and a writer who takes on the role of a historian and is aimed at finding the meaning of historical events. 1 Introduction Marina Tsvetaeva and Sophia Parnok Were Both Russian Poets Living During the First Half of the Twentieth Century
Introduction Marina Tsvetaeva and Sophia Parnok were both Russian poets living during the first half of the twentieth century. Tsvetaeva is considered one of the most prominent poets of the Silver Age, and is recognized for her innovative and complex style. Parnok is far less well-known, by Russians and scholars alike, and the process of re-establishing her as a figure in Russian literary history began just thirty years ago, with the work of scholars that will be discussed below. What connects these two women is the affair they conducted from 1914 to 1916, and the poetry they wrote chronicling it. This paper endeavors to examine the poetry of Tsvetaeva and Parnok in the context of that relationship, and also to consider how their poetry and thought on queerness evolved afterwards. The theme of Tsvetaeva and Parnok’s relationship, particularly from the perspective of what Tsvetaeva wrote in her Подруга [Girlfriend] cycle, has been treated in a number of studies to date. However, there are three main works which examine both this specific relationship in detail, and the queer sexualities of Tsvetaeva and Parnok throughout their entire lives. Sophia Polyakova is credited both with the re-discovery and rehabilitation of Parnok as a poet worth studying, and of being the first to publish work on the relationship between her and Tsvetaeva. Using poetic analysis and archival research, her book Незакатные оны дни: Цветаева и Парнок [Those Unfading Days: Tsvetaeva and Parnok] puts together a cohesive story about events within the relationship, considering both the experience of the two women as well as that of their social circle.
