Because this nightmare is a very real problem .. When a child is missing, it is the most emotionally exhausting experience a family may ever face. To help parents take action if this tragedy should ever occur, WKJF -AM and WKJF -FM organized a program to provide the most precise child identification possible. These Fetzer radio stations contacted a local video movie dealer and the Cadillac area Jaycees to create video prints of each participating child as the youngster talked and moved. Afterwards, area law enforce- ment agencies were given the video tape for their permanent files. WKJF -AM/FM organized and publicized the program, the Jaycees donated man- power, and the video movie dealer donated the taping services-all absolutely free to the families. The child video print program enjoyed area -wide participation and is scheduled for an update. Providing records that give parents a fighting chance in the search for missing youngsters is all a part of the Fetzer tradition of total community involvement.

NAB also again urges the Commission to adopt incentive-based approaches grounded in marketplace realities to promote a more diverse broadcast industry. 1 The National Association of Broadcasters is a nonprofit trade association that advocates on behalf of free local radio and television stations and broadcast networks before Congress, the Federal Communications Commission and other federal agencies, and the courts. 2 Media Bureau Invites Comments on Study Submitted by the Minority Media and Telecommunications Council in 2010 Quadrennial Review of Broadcast Ownership Rules, Public Notice, MB Docket Nos. 09-182, 07-294, DA 13-1317 (Jun. 7, 2013) (“Public Notice”). 3 Fratrik, Dr. Mark R., Vice President and Chief Economist, BIA/Kelsey, “The Impact of Cross Media Ownership on Minority/Women Owned Broadcast Stations” (May 30, 2013).

  • Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Media Ownership Rules
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Media Ownership Rules Updated October 9, 2018 Congressional Research Service https://crsreports.congress.gov R45338 SUMMARY R45338 Federal Communications Commission (FCC) October 9, 2018 Media Ownership Rules Dana A. Scherer The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) aims, with its broadcast media ownership Specialist in rules, to promote localism and competition by restricting the number of media outlets that a Telecommunications single entity may own or control within a geographic market and, in the case of broadcast Policy television stations, nationwide. In addition, the FCC seeks to encourage diversity, including (1) the diversity of viewpoints, as reflected in the availability of media content reflecting a variety of perspectives; (2) diversity of programming, as indicated by a variety of formats and content; (3) outlet diversity, to ensure the presence of multiple independently owned media outlets within a geographic market; and (4) minority and female ownership of broadcast media outlets. Two FCC media ownership rules have proven particularly controversial. Its national media ownership rule prohibits any entity from owning commercial television stations that reach more than 39% of U.S. households nationwide. Its “UHF discount” rule discounts by half the reach of a station broadcasting in the Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) band for the purpose of applying the national media ownership rule. In December 2017, the commission opened a rulemaking proceeding, seeking comments about whether it should modify or repeal the two rules. If the FCC retains the UHF discount, even if it maintains the 39% cap, a single entity could potentially reach 78% of U.S. households through its ownership of broadcast television stations.

  • COMPLAINT Plaintiff, Tribune Media Company (“Tribune”), by and Through Its Undersigned Attorneys, Files This Verified Complaint Against Defendant, Sinclair
EFiled: Aug 09 2018 12:05AM EDT Transaction ID 62327554 Case No. 2018-0593- IN THE COURT OF CHANCERY OF THE STATE OF DELAWARE Tribune Media Company, a Delaware corporation, Plaintiff, C.A. No. 2018- _____-_____ v. Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc., a Maryland corporation, Defendant. VERIFIED COMPLAINT Plaintiff, Tribune Media Company (“Tribune”), by and through its undersigned attorneys, files this Verified Complaint against Defendant, Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc. (“Sinclair”), and alleges as follows: Introduction 1. Tribune and Sinclair are media companies that own and operate local television stations. In May 2017, the companies entered into an Agreement and 1 Plan of Merger (the “Merger Agreement”) pursuant to which Sinclair agreed to acquire Tribune for cash and stock valued at $43.50 per share, for an aggregate purchase price of approximately $3.9 billion (the “Merger”). 1 A true and correct copy of the Merger Agreement is attached as Exhibit A. The Merger Agreement is incorporated herein by reference. Unless defined herein, all capitalized terms in this Verified Complaint have the meanings ascribed to them in the Merger Agreement. RLF1 19833012v.1 2. Sinclair owns the largest number of local television stations of any media company in the United States, and Tribune and Sinclair were well aware that a combination of the two companies would trigger regulatory scrutiny by both the United States Department of Justice (“DOJ”) and the Federal Communications Commission (the “FCC”). Because speed and certainty were critical to Tribune, it conditioned its agreement on obtaining from Sinclair a constrictive set of deal terms obligating Sinclair to use its reasonable best efforts to obtain prompt regulatory clearance of the transaction.

Vertically integrated behemoths like Netflix and Amazon continue to grow with no end in sight. Despite this, we believe there is a place in the media ecosystem for traditional terrestrial broadcast companies. SUMMARY AND OPINION We view the broadcasters as attractive investments. We believe there is the potential for consolidation. On April 20, 2017, the FCC reinstated the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) discount giving broadcasters with UHF stations the ability to add stations without running afoul of the National Ownership Cap. More importantly, the current 39% ownership cap is under review at the FCC. Given the ubiquitous presence of the internet which foster an excess of video options and media voices, we believe the current ownership cap could be viewed as antiquated. Should the FCC substantially change the ownership cap, we would expect consolidation to accelerate. Broadcast consolidation would have the opportunity to deliver substantial synergies to the industry. We would expect both cost reductions and revenue growth, primarily in the form of increased retransmission revenue, to benefit the broadcast stations and networks.

  • 2012 NABJ Diversity Census an Examination of Television Newsroom Management
2012 2012 NABJ Diversity Census An examination of Television Newsroom Management By Bob Butler National Association of Black Journalists PREFACE Five years ago, in the absence of any information, NABJ set out to research and report the true state of newsroom management diversity. The result was the Television Newsroom Management Diversity Census. Many have now come to depend on this important document to determine the true health and viability of diversity within today’s newsrooms. The report is not only for the public and those who work in the industry, but also corporations and employers who are charged with assessing the realities of these circumstances. The 2012 Television Newsroom Management Diversity Census is comprised of two reports. The first report studies the diversity of news managers at 295 stations owned by different 19 companies. There are more than 700 such stations nationwide and it is our intent to eventually document every television newsroom in the country. The second report examines the diversity of newsroom managers and executives at broadcast and cable news networks. Unlike the local station, which broadcast to their respective markets, the networks provide news to the entire country. You may notice that ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC are mentioned in both reports. These networks own 51 stations that were included in the stations report. The information within the local station report is not included nor factored into the national news networks report. The demographic data retrieved is inspired by Section 257 of the amended Communications Act of 1934, which requires the FCC to “identify and eliminate, through regulatory action, market entry barriers for entrepreneurs and other small businesses in the provision and ownership of telecommunications and information services.” NABJ is the only source in the country that collects employment census data, which is a critical component in determining if those barriers exist.
