The correct understanding of teaching is all important in educating a non-dancer into being a knowledgeable, enthusiastic and capable square dancer." These words are as true today as they were when written in "Square Dancing", the official magazine of Sets In Order in November 1977. We have weekend programs to bring dancers into a mainstream program in one weekend. Were we right in 1977 when we took over forty weeks to teach someone mainstream dancing and then invite them to our club? Are we right when we teach someone dancing in one weekend and invite them into our club? The 1977 program took 102 1/2 hours of instruction.

One of the most significant occurrences of the bissextile day, better known as February 29, was in the year 2000. Our computers had successfully made the transition from 1999, but experts still feared the effect of this extra day on the world’s digital infrastructure. Tradition, however, tells us that leap year has created even greater fears in the unmarried male. As Western’s earliest student magazine, The Elevator, reminded readers in 1916, February 29 marked a year in which “hopeful ladies are supposed to take bold steps,” defy the rules of courtship, and propose marriage to the object of their affection. Some say that this custom originated in fifth-century Ireland, where St. Patrick allowed women to take the initiative every four years after St. Brigid complained to him that they were having to wait too long for husbands. Others credit a Scottish law enacted in 1288 under the unmarried Queen Margaret, which allowed a maiden “liberty to bespeak ye man she likes” during leap year.

During the assembly, administra- tion are introduced, team captains for all of the fall sports are recognized, there are perfor- mances by various organizations and a variety of games and class cheers for class cup points. Club Fair - September The Club Fair usually takes place in the begin- ning of the school year during lunch. This event is intended to benefit both the clubs and the students. The students are looking for somewhere to belong and participate, while the club seeks participants. Staff Appreciation Football Game - September All teachers and staff here at El Rancho High School have devoted their time to edu- cating students. To thank the staff, every year during Football season, a dinner is held on the football field during a game for the teachers and their families. Pep Commission - All year The students of the Pep Commission (open to all students) meet each Monday after school to make informational signs and other spirit decorations for the vari- ous sporting events on campus. - 1 - Homecoming Week Blue Pride Day - October This is the kick-off day for Homecoming week. On this day we decorate our en- tire school according to our Homecom- ing theme. There is Blue Pride almost ev- erywhere. Teacher and staff doors and the main gates to enter the school are decorated.

    Sadie Hawkins Dance The Sadie Hawkins dance is named after the Li'l Abner comic strip character Sadie Hawkins, created by cartoonist Al Capp. In the strip, Sadie Hawkins Day fell on a given day in November (Capp never specified an exact date). The unmarried women of Dogpatch got to chase the bachelors and "marry up" with the ones they caught. The event was introduced in a daily strip, which ran on November 15, 1937. Traditionally, Sadie Hawkins Day is celebrated on the Saturday that follows November 9. In the Li'l Abner strip, Sadie was the homely daughter of Hekzebiah Hawkins, who called together all the unmarried men of Dogpatch and declared it Sadie Hawkins Day, proclaiming: "When ah fires [my gun], all o' yo' kin start a-runnin! When ah fires agin—after givin' yo' a fair start—Sadie starts a runnin'. Th' one she ketches'll be her husbin." Soon all the town spinsters decided that this was such a good idea, they made Sadie Hawkins Day a mandatory yearly event. In the U.S. and Canada, this concept was popularized by establishing dance events to which the woman invited a man of her choosing, instead of demurely waiting for a man to ask her. The first known such event was held on November 9, 1938. Within a year, hundreds of similar events followed suit. By 1952, the event was reportedly celebrated at 40,000 known venues. It became a woman- empowering rite at high schools and college campuses, and the tradition continues in some regional American cultures.

After all, 71 percent of the planet’s surface is covered by oceans. And fish have ravines and trenches – sometimes several kilometers deep – in which to roam, surrounded by gigantic underwater mountain ranges and endless expanse. The freedom they enjoy down there, in the depths of the sea, must be truly without bounds. By contrast, the small world inhabited by land dwellers – who have less than one-third of the planet’s surface between them – seems cramped. What’s more, humans can only use their living space on a two-dimensional basis because gravity always forces them down. If – on occasion – they want to join the birds or the fish in the third dimension, they’re forced to squeeze themselves into flying metal tubes or huge steel whales.

    Sadie Hawkins Origin

    Sadie Hawkins Origin Sadie Hawkins’ renown, which evolved into an American folk-holiday in some places, doesn’t really originate from a dance, but rather from a race, as we shall soon see. Sadie was the product of the fertile imagination of cartoonist Al Capp. She was a character in his popular cartoon Lil’ Abner, set in the hillbilly town of Dogpatch, that began its wildly successful 40 year run in 1934. The way Al tells it, Sadie was the daughter of Hekzebiah Hawkins, one of the town’s first settlers, who had the dubious distinction of being the “homeliest gal in all them hills.” After waiting not-so-patiently for 15 years for a suitor to show up at her door, not a single prospective husband arrived to court her. With each passing year, Sadie became more and more panicky, as did her father, who did not relish the idea of supporting a spinster daughter for the rest of her days. So, figuring he had nothing to lose, he called all the unmarried men of Dogpatch together and declared it Sadie Hawkins Day. In a reversal of Atalanta’s race in ancient Greek mythology, the race placed Sadie in hot pursuit of the town’s bachelors; the “lucky” chap she managed to catch became her lawful wedded husband. Or, as her Paw explained it, “When ah fires [my gun], all o’ yo’ kin start a-runnin! When ah fires agin—after givin’ yo’ a fair start—Sadie starts a runnin’. Th’ one she ketches’ll be her husbin.” Pure poetry.
