Supplemental Rare Plant Survey Horn River Mainline Project August 2010 / 6774 4.4.1 Bog Adder's-Mouth Orchid (S2S3) Bog adder's-mouth orchid (Malaxis paludosa (L.) Sw.) is a small perennial orchid that grows from 5-15 cm tall on mossy ground (Plates 6 and 7). Two to five, alternate, elliptic leaves, 5-12 mm long, grow at the base of the plant. Flowers are yellowish-green and inconspicuous, 1-1.5 mm long, and appear from June to August. The fruit is a 4 mm long capsule splitting into three parts to release many tiny seeds (Kershaw et al. 2001). Bog adder's-mouth is ranked S2S3 and is on the Blue List in BC. Bog adder's-mouth orchid was observed once during the 2010 rare plant survey. Four plants were observed on the existing pipeline right-of-way adjacent to the proposed route (see Figure 3I). Three plants are 7 m northeast of centreline, as measured on a handheld GPS. The fourth plant is 11 m northeast of centreline as measured on a handheld GPS. Discussion and recommended mitigation measures for bog adder's-mouth orchid are summarized in Table 4. 4.4.2 European Water-Hemlock (S2S3) European water-hemlock (Cicuta virosa L.) is a stout perennial herb that grows 0.3-1 m high. It has compound stem leaves divided 1-3 times.
