Trinity 14 20 A very warm welcome to all our visitors, especially if you are visiting us for the first time. There will be many of our church family who will not yet feel able to worship with us in church—though they will continue to join us as we live-stream the service as we have done for the last months. We are also much constrained in what we are able to do to ensure the safety of all who are present in the Priory today. It is mandatory to wear face masks in the Priory. You will be guided to your seats by a steward, and we ask you to take your seat in the pew to which you are guided. Unfortunately, singing is not yet permitted, so there will be no hymns, though we are able to appreciate the organ—and now the choral music. The collection plate will be at the back of Church or you can make an electronic payment, or join our Planned Giving Scheme. Holy Communion will be given (only in one kind) at the chancel step, please follow the direction of the stewards, and keep social distancing as you line up and return to your seat via the side aisles. At the end of the service, please wait, as we will be leaving church starting with the back rows first. (unless you wish to stay to the end of the organ voluntary.) Due to the new restrictions please do not socialise after the service. THE FIRST READING A reading from the book of Genesis (Gen.50. 15-21) Realizing that their father was dead, Joseph’s brothers said, ‘What if Joseph still bears a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong that we did to him?’ So they approached Joseph, saying, ‘Your father gave this instruction before he died, “Say to Joseph: I beg you, forgive the crime of your brothers and the wrong they did in harming you.” Now therefore please forgive the crime of the servants of the God of your father.’ Joseph wept when they spoke to him. Then his brothers also wept, fell down before him, and said, ‘We are here as your slaves.’ But Joseph said to them, ‘Do not be afraid! Am I in the place of God? Even though you intended to do harm to me, God intended it for good, in order to preserve a numerous people, as he is doing today. So have no fear; I myself will provide for you and your little ones.’ In this way he reassured them, speaking kindly to them. For the word of the Lord Thanks be to God. PSALM 103 The Lord has compassion on his children The Lord is full of compassion and mercy, slow to anger and of great kindness. He will not always accuse us, neither will he keep his anger for ever. He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our wickedness. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his mercy upon those who fear him. 4 As far as the east is from the west, so far has he set our sins from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so is the Lord merciful towards those who fear him. The Lord has compassion on his children Please sit for THE SECOND READING A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans (Romans 14. 1-12) Welcome those who are weak in faith, but not for the purpose of quarrelling over opinions. Some believe in eating anything, while the weak eat only vegetables. Those who eat must not despise those who abstain, and those who abstain must not pass judgement on those who eat; for God has welcomed them. Who are you to pass judgement on servants of another? It is before their own lord that they stand or fall. And they will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make them stand. Some judge one day to be better than another, while others judge all days to be alike. Let all be fully convinced in their own minds. Those who observe the day, observe it in honour of the Lord. Also those who eat, eat in honour of the Lord, since they give thanks to God; while those who abstain, abstain in honour of the Lord and give thanks to God. We do not live to ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves. If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, so that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living. Why do you pass judgement on your brother or sister? Between Synods the Deanery Synod Standing Committee meets to plan an Agenda that is relevant to all parishes. Fr. Shaun, stepped down as Area Dean and Chairman of the Synod and Bishop Julian licensed Revd Canon Alistair McHaffie (Preston St. Matthew’s) on 7th October 2019 at Preston Minster. I am a member of the Standing Committee. Deanery Synod Meeting at St Stephen’s, Broadgate on Monday 28th Jan 2019 Bishop Jill gave the address calling on Preston Deanery to STAND UP: Stand up in calling - What has God really called us to do? It’s such a privilege being Bishop of Lancaster, finding buried treasure everywhere, as see the work of the parishes! Drawn to prayer, why? People are desperately hungry for the Gospel; they are increasingly looking for guidance; they are praying for miracles, particularly younger people. The Gospel – ‘Disney’ is selling it, shows the hunger. Luke 15:20 - “. his father saw him and had compassion”. God hasn’t lost us, God’s heart is filled with compassion. Please ask the Stewards for assistance. Other Toilets are in the Cathedral Crypt, accessed by the stairs on the right at the front of the Cathedral, or via the outside Crypt doors. If you find it more comfortable to sit rather than stand or kneel, please do so. Introduction David Picken was born and raised in Hednesford, a small mining town in South Staffordshire. He left home to go to University, where he met Cathy, and studied for a degree awarded by the University of London and then trained to teach at Christ Church, Canterbury. After a brief teaching career, David trained for the priesthood at Lincoln Theological College. Since then he has spent time in Chichester, Worcester and Oxford dioceses in parochial ministry and as an Area Dean.
