- 2 - About this service

This is a special service of celebration that marks the beginning of a new phase of ministry both for James and for the people of this community. We meet together anticipating God’s blessing on the years ahead. At the beginning of any new ministry, a priest is appointed to their new role in a service that gives the community an opportunity to welcome them, and allows priest and people to commit themselves to the ministry ahead and to pray for God’s leading in it.

Some features of this service have their origins in the Middle Ages; others are comparatively new. This reminds us both that Christian ministry has been offered for centuries, and that the unchanging Gospel has to be proclaimed afresh for each succeeding generation.

The ministry to which James is being appointed is to the parishes and the wider community. The role of the Anglican parish priest is to care for the whole community and also to nurture the faithful. He works with all those in the local community, whether they are people of faith or not. Therefore within this service, the welcome is made by both church people and representatives of the wider community.

In this service, James is presented to the Bishop and then presented to the community by the Bishop. The Bishop will remind James of the responsibility for the care of the churches which is shared with the Bishop and Incumbent. The Archdeacon will install James giving him day to day oversight for St Mark’s. James is then welcomed by representatives of the churches and the wider community.

The Gathering and Introduction

A welcome from the Revd David Fudger, Vicar of Mansfield St Peter & St Paul and Mansfield St Mark.

Processional Hymn Please stand to sing Lord, for the years Your love has kept and guided, Urged and inspired us, cheered us on our way, Sought us and saved us, pardoned and provided, Lord of the years, we bring our thanks today.

Lord, for that word, The word of life which fires us, Speaks to our hearts and sets our souls ablaze, Teaches and trains, rebukes us and inspires us, Lord of the word, receive Your people's praise.

Lord, for our land In this our generation, Spirits oppressed by pleasure, wealth and care; For young and old, for commonwealth and nation, Lord of our land, be pleased to hear our prayer.

Lord, for our world, When we disown and doubt Him, Loveless in strength, and comfortless in pain; Hungry and helpless, lost indeed without Him, Lord of the world, we pray that Christ may reign.

Lord for ourselves; In living power remake us, Self on the cross and Christ upon the throne; Past put behind us, for the future take us, Lord of our lives, to live for Christ alone.

- 5 - Greeting Please remain standing The Bishop says: Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you And also with you Please sit The Bishop brings his greetings and introduces the service.

The Gospel Reading John 21:15-17

Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John Glory to you, O Lord

Jesus and Peter When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my lambs.’ A second time he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Tend my sheep.’ He said to him the third time, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ And he said to him, ‘Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep.’

This is the gospel of the Lord Praise to you, O Christ

Please sit The Sermon The Rt Revd Tony Porter, Bishop of Sherwood.

The Welcome

The Bishop presents the new Associate Priest to the congregation

Bishop I present to you James as your new Associate Priest. Remember that you share with him in the ministry to which he has been called; for as St Peter wrote to all Christians: You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people.

The Vicar of Mansfield St Peter & St Paul and Mansfield St Mark, the Revd David Fudger, introduces the welcomes.

The churchwardens welcome the new Associate Priest on behalf of the parishes, followed by greetings from representatives of the local community. - 10 - The new Associate Priest responds and provides details of upcoming services (see page 15).

Hymn

During this hymn, a collection will be taken on behalf of the Bishop’s Discretionary Fund Please stand to sing

All my hope on God is founded; He doth still my trust renew, Me through change and chance God guideth, Only good and only true. God unknown, God alone Calls my heart to be His own.

Pride of all and earthly glory, Sword and crown betray God’s trust; What with care and toil God buildeth, Tower and temple fall to dust. But God’s power, hour by hour, Is my temple and my tower.

God’s great goodness aye endureth, Deep God’s wisdom, passing thought: Splendour, light and life attend him, Beauty springeth out of naught. Evermore from God’s store Newborn worlds rise and adore.

Daily doth th’almighty Giver Bounteous gifts on us bestow; His desire our soul delighteth, Pleasure leads us where we go. Love doth stand at God’s hand; Joy doth wait on God’s command.

- 11 - Still from us to God eternal Sacrifice of praise be done, High above all praises praising For the gift of Christ, God’s Son. Christ doth call one and all: Ye who follow shall not fall.

The Intercessions

The new Associate Priest leads the people in prayer.

The following response may be used: Lord in your mercy Hear our prayer

The Lord’s Prayer

Priest As our Saviour has taught us, so we pray

Our Father in heaven; Hallowed be your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen

- 12 - Renewing our Vision

Three representatives from the church community stand before the new minister with symbols of ministry.

The Area Dean says:

We offer ourselves anew in the service of God in these benefices, in the deanery and across the diocese.

Jesus said, “Go into all the world and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20)

We pledge ourselves to care for all the people of these benefices – to announce the Good News of Jesus Christ and invite them into the journey of faith as his disciples.

Growing Disciples wider

A representative presents water for baptism and then says: We welcome you to share with us in telling the story of God’s love, to baptise new disciples and to walk with them in the way of Christ, to nurture them in the faith and equip them to serve Christ in the world.

Growing Disciples younger

A representative presents a large Bible and then says: We welcome you to share with us making Christ known in fresh ways to new generations in these benefices, supporting all who care for the young, in families, schools and in our ministry as churches teaching the faith and growing disciples of all ages.

Growing Disciples deeper

A representative presents bread and wine and then says: We welcome you to share with us in deepening our partnership in the gospel with all Christian people, nourishing our life together through word and sacrament; that we may grow into the full likeness of Christ in faith, hope and love.

- 13 - When all the symbols have been presented, the new minister responds:

In the power of the Holy Spirit, may we continue to join together in the transforming mission of God, growing disciples wider, younger and deeper, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen All stand The Blessing

Bishop May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen

Hymn

During this hymn, the Bishop’s Procession moves to the main Church door: Bishop and Associate Priest, followed by Registrar, Archdeacon, Vicar and Area Dean

Please remain standing to sing the hymn

Guide me, O thou great redeemer, Pilgrim through this barren land; I am weak, but thou art mighty, Hold me with thy powerful hand; Bread of heaven, bread of heaven Feed me till I want no more.

Open now the crystal fountain Whence the healing stream doth flow; Let the fire and cloudy pillar Lead me all my journey through: Strong deliverer, strong deliverer; Be thou still my strength and shield.

- 14 - When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside; Death of death, and hell's destruction Land me safe on Canaan's side: Songs of praises, songs of praises, I will ever give to thee.
