Wider Younger Deeper www.growingdisciples.co.uk More than 80 nurture courses are part of the follow-up to oneLIFE mission t is over a month now since the oneLIFE mission took place in the diocese, when churches across the diocese organised hundreds of events to attract new people. The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, Iwas here to support the mission along with Bishop Paul, Bishop Tony, and visiting Bishops from other dioceses. Over four exciting days of the mission, churches shared the good news of Jesus with the people in their communities. As part of the follow-up to the mission more than 80 nurture courses are running to welcome and support people who want to explore questions of faith. There are many stories of people touched by the mission: following on from oneLIFE in the River Idle Benefice, 16 people attend an Alpha Supper in a local café; 15 of those who attended signed up on the night to continue to meet, and another joined along the way. One of the visiting evangelists hosted in Bassetlaw and Bawtry Deanery was an ex-SAS sniper, Neil Obbard. Someone who had been invited to a Men's Pie and Pint evening recognised him when he turned up because they had served together in the military. They chatted together, he listened to Neil's testimony and later signed up to do Alpha. The Woven network of churches in the north of Nottingham held a week of activities in local schools as part of oneLIFE: Bluecoat Aspley, Bluecoat Wollaton, Bluecoat Beechdale and Nottingham University Samworth Academy. During the week a group of singers, rappers, actors and sport coaches took over assemblies, classes and lunch clubs with the aim of sharing the love of Jesus. A youth event at the end of the week at St Margaret’s Aspley was attended by more than 100 young people; an event at St John’s Bilborough was attended by 400, with more waiting outside to get in. Wednesday 16th October 2019 Dear Friends, Following my recent announcement that the Venerable David Picken will be moving on in mid-January 2020 to take up his new appointment as the Archdeacon of Lancaster, I can now confirm the interim arrangements which will enable a smooth transition until a new archdeacon is appointed. The Revd Canon Mark Adams, Vicar of the Beck & Trent Benefice and currently Area Dean for Southwell & Newark in the Newark Archdeaconry, has agreed to be interim Assistant Archdeacon for the Newark archdeaconry with a particular focus on providing support to Area Deans as well as in managing the appointment process with parishes in vacancy. The Venerable Phil Williams, Archdeacon of Nottingham, will support the Newark Archdeaconry in relation to any statutory archidiaconal matters that arise, though Mark will be the first point of contact. I am pleased to let you know that The Revd Andrew Porter, Vicar of Holy Trinity Church, Southwell will act as Assistant Area Dean for Newark & Southwell during this interim period. There will be a handover period for David, Mark and Andrew through December, prior to David’s last day on 16th January. Please note that there will be a Farewell Service in Southwell Minster on Wednesday 15th January, at 7.30pm, to give thanks for David’s ministry in the diocese and pray for him and Cathy as they prepare for God’s new calling for them to serve in the Diocese of Blackburn. May I take this opportunity to express my thanks to both Mark and Andrew for the gifts they will bring during this interim period.

PORVOO PRAYER DIARY 2021 The Porvoo Declaration commits the churches which have signed it ‘to share a common life’ and ‘to pray for and with one another’. An important way of doing this is to pray through the year for the Porvoo churches and their Dioceses. The Prayer Diary is a list of Porvoo Communion Dioceses or churches covering each Sunday of the year, mindful of the many calls upon compilers of intercessions, and the environmental and production costs of printing a more elaborate list. Those using the calendar are invited to choose one day each week on which they will pray for the Porvoo churches. It is hoped that individuals and parishes, cathedrals and religious orders will make use of the Calendar in their own cycle of prayer week by week. In addition to the churches which have approved the Porvoo Declaration, we continue to pray for churches with observer status. Observers attend all the meetings held under the Agreement.
