All stand for

The Processional Hymn

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord! Unnumbered blessings give my spirit voice; tender to me the promise of his word; in God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice.

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his name! Make known his might, the deeds his arm has done; his mercy sure, from age to age to same; his holy name - the Lord, the Mighty One.

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might! Powers and dominions lay their glory by. Proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight, the hungry fed, the humble lifted high.

Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word! Firm is his promise, and his mercy sure. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord to children's children and for evermore!

Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Tune: Woodlands (NEH 186)

All remain standing as the greets the people

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. And also with you.

All sit. The Archdeacon of Lancaster designate comes and stands before the Bishop. The Area Deans of the Archdeaconry of Lancaster come and stand with the Archdeacon Designate. The Archdeacon of Blackburn presents the Archdeacon designate to the Bishop.

Reverend Father in God, I present the Venerable David Picken to be collated as Archdeacon of Lancaster.

The Collation The Bishop says The Archdeacon of Lancaster is to assist the Bishop in the pastoral care of his archdeaconry, to work especially with the Bishop of Lancaster, his fellow Archdeacon, and other senior colleagues and particularly the Area Deans, to support clergy and churchwardens in the exercise of their office and ministry and to encourage the whole Church so that, in the power of the Spirit we may proclaim the kingdom of God, and make disciples for Jesus Christ through worship, service and witness to the glory of God the Father. David, will you carry out this ministry to the best of your ability, seeking in all you do to make the good news of Christ known to all.

The Archdeacon designate responds:

With the help of God, I will.

The Bishop continues

Brothers and sisters in Christ, before I Collate David Picken as Archdeacon of Lancaster, he must make the Declaration of Assent and take the Oaths of Allegiance and Canonical Obedience.

The Church of England is part of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church worshipping the one true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It professes the faith uniquely revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds, which faith the Church is called upon to proclaim afresh in each generation. Led by the Holy Spirit, it has borne witness to Christian truth in its historic formularies, the Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion, the Book of Common Prayer and the Ordering of Bishops, and .

In the declaration you are about to make, will you affirm your loyalty to this inheritance of faith as your inspiration and guidance under God in bringing the grace and truth of Christ to this generation?

7

Standing before the Bishop, the Archdeacon designate says The Declaration of Assent

I, David Picken, do so affirm, and accordingly declare my belief in the faith which is revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds and to which the historic formularies of the Church of England bear witness; and in public prayer and administration of the sacraments I will use only the forms of service which are authorised or allowed by .

The Oath of Allegiance

I, David Picken, do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, her heirs and successors, according to law: so help me God. The Oath of Canonical Obedience

The Archdeacon designate kneels before the Bishop. The Bishop invites the people to pray in silence for a short period, after which he says:

Almighty God who has given you the will to undertake all these things, give you also the strength to perform them, that he may complete that work which he has begun in you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Bishop sits and reads the Deed of Collation, the Archdeacon designate kneeling before him and holding the Deed with both hands. The Bishop presents the Deed to the Archdeacon, still kneeling, with these words

Receive this cure, your care and ours. Be diligent in taking your part with your brothers and sisters of the College of Canons in the Government of this holy place that here the word of God may be faithfully preached and the sacraments duly administered; and in all things so uphold the honour and dignity of our Cathedral Church.

The Area Deans pray for the Archdeacon of Lancaster, saying together

Heavenly Father, bless David as he takes up his new ministry. Keep him thankful that together with your people he may discern Christ in the work he undertakes, proclaim him in word and deed, and remain faithful to him; 8

for the sake of those whom he seeks to serve, and to the glory of your name. Amen.

The Bishop takes his staff and blesses the Archdeacon of Lancaster, saying

God the Father strengthen you and increase your faith; God the Son fill you with love and a spirit of service; God the Holy Spirit guide you into all truth; And the blessing of God Almighty, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, rest upon you and remain with you always. Amen.

The Archdeacon of Lancaster stands and the Bishop hands him his Mandate, saying

Receive this Mandate, which you must hand to the Dean in order that you may be installed.

The Archdeacon of Blackburn and the Area Deans return to their places. The Residentiary Canons lead the Archdeacon of Lancaster to the Dean.

The Installations The Archdeacon of Lancaster says

Mr Dean, I present to you this Mandate and I pray that you will install and induct me into the Stall of the Archdeacon of Lancaster in this Cathedral Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in Blackburn.

The Dean says

We accept these letters, but first you must make, in the face of this Chapter and of this congregation, the appointed declaration of obedience to the Constitution and Statutes of this Cathedral Church.

The Archdeacon of Lancaster says

I, David Picken, do declare that I will be faithful and loyal to this Cathedral Church of Blackburn and the Dean. With the help of God and to the best of my power I will sustain my part in its life and work, recognising that the Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop and a centre of worship and mission. I will encourage all members of the Cathedral Foundation in their work and duties. I accept the Constitution and Statutes of this Cathedral and will duly observe them, so help me God. 9

Let us pray.

O God, you know us to be set in the midst of so many and great dangers, that by reason of the frailty of our nature we cannot always stand upright: grant to us such strength and protection as may support us in all dangers and carry us through all temptations; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word Sit for The Old Testament Reading

A reading from the Second Book of Samuel. Read by Diane Warner, .

Absalom happened to meet the servants of David. Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak. His head caught fast in the oak, and he was left hanging between heaven and earth, while the mule that was under him went on. A man saw it, and told Joab, ‘I saw Absalom hanging in an oak.’ Joab said, ‘I will not waste time like this with you.’ He took three spears in his hand, and thrust them into the heart of Absalom, while he was still alive in the oak. Now David was sitting between the two gates. The sentinel went up to the roof of the gate by the wall, and when he looked up, he saw a man running alone. The sentinel shouted and told the king. The king said, ‘If he is alone, there are tidings in his mouth.’ He kept coming, and drew near.

The king said, ‘Turn aside, and stand here.’ So he turned aside, and stood still. Then the Cushite came; and the Cushite said, ‘Good tidings for my lord the king! For the Lord has vindicated you this day, delivering you from the power of all who rose up against you.’ The king said to the Cushite, ‘Is it well with the young man

11

Absalom?’ The Cushite answered, ‘May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up to do you harm, be like that young man.’

The king was deeply moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept; and as he went, he said, ‘O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would that I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!’

It was told Joab, ‘The king is weeping and mourning for Absalom.’ So the victory that day was turned into mourning for all the troops; for the troops heard that day, ‘The king is grieving for his son.’ The troops stole into the city that day as soldiers steal in who are ashamed when they flee in battle. (19.9-10, 14, 24-25, 30-19.3) This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Gospel Reading

The Deacon says The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.

When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side of the lake, a great crowd gathered round him; and he was by the lake. Then one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet and 12 begged him repeatedly, ‘My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live.’ So he went with him.

And a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him. Now there was a woman who had been suffering from haemorrhages for twelve years. She had endured much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather grew worse. She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, for she said, ‘If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well.’ Immediately her haemorrhage stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, ‘Who touched my clothes?’ And his disciples said to him, ‘You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, “Who touched me?” ’ He looked all round to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. He said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.’

While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader’s house to say, ‘Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?’ But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, ‘Do not fear, only believe.’ He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. When they came to the house of the leader of the synagogue, he saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. When he had entered, he said to them, ‘Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping.’ And they laughed at him. Then he put them all outside, and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, ‘Talitha cum’, which means, ‘Little girl, get up!’ And immediately the girl got up and began to walk about (she was twelve years of age). At this they were overcome with amazement. He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat. (5.21-43) This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Merciful Father, Accept these prayers For the sake of your son, Our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The peace of the Lord be always with you, and also with you.

The Deacon says Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

All exchange a sign of peace.

14

The Liturgy of the Sacrament

The Hymn All remain standing to sing the hymn, during which a collection is taken and presented, and the Altar is prepared.

Let all mortal flesh keep silence And with fear and trembling stand; Ponder nothing earthly-minded, For with blessing in his hand Christ our God to earth descendeth, Our full homage to demand.

King of kings, yet born of Mary, As of old on earth he stood, Lord of lords, in human vesture, In the body and the blood: He will give to all the faithful His own self for heavenly food.

Rank on rank the host of heaven Spreads its vanguard on the way, As the Light of light descendeth From the realms of endless day, That the powers of hell may vanish As the darkness clears away.

At his feet the six-winged seraph; Cherubim with sleepless eye, Veil their faces to the Presence, As with ceaseless voice they cry, Alleluya, Alleluya, Alleluya, Lord most high!

Words: Liturgy of St James, tr. Gerard Moultrie (1829 - 1885) Tune: Picardy (NEH 295)

The Taking of the Bread and Wine

When the Altar is prepared, this prayer is said: Be present, be present Lord Jesus Christ, our risen high ; make yourself known in the breaking of bread. Amen.

15

The Eucharistic Prayer

It is indeed right and good that we should give you thanks, praise and glory, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.

Father, you made the world and love your creation. You gave your Son Jesus Christ to be our Saviour. His dying and rising have set us free from sin and death. And so we gladly thank you, with saints and angels praising you, and singing:

16

We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son.

On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory.

Great is the mystery of faith:

17

Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever.

The Lord’s Prayer

As our Saviour taught us, so we pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

The bishop breaks the consecrated bread.

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

18

All sing Agnus Dei
