Słupsk Bioenergy Cluster: a new paradigm for a local circular economy in renewable energy and waste recycling in Poland Authors Mark Rasmussen (SEI), Marek Giełczewski (WULS), Andrzej Wójtowicz (Słupsk Waterworks), Karina Barquet (SEI), Arno Rosemarin (SEI) Municipal officials and local business leaders in the Polish city of Słupsk aren’t waiting for the benefits of the circular economy in renewable energy production and waste recycling to come to their corner of the Baltic Sea Region. They’re making it happen now from the ground up and demonstrating how these transitions can be designed and operationalized at the city-county level. In 2020, the Słupsk Bioenergy Cluster will reach a critical milestone when completion of a new energy distribution system will link 20 participating businesses and city facilities, 40 000 electricity users and 120 000 wastewater customers – all part of an innovative renewable energy sharing and waste recycling system. Of course, given the nature of statistical figures in Eretz Yisrael in general, which are, in themselves, deficient, it would be difficult to determine with certainty absolute numbers regarding the migration movement, but it appears that the figures provided herein, even if not certain, are close to the truth. Hence, a margin of error of ten to fifteen percent needs to be taken into account. The figures on the population in the area that lies outside the State of Israel are less accurate, and the margin of error is greater. This review summarizes the situation up until June 1st, 1948 (only in one case – the evacuation of Jenin, does it include a later occurrence). She argues persuasively that one’s experience of transcendence resulted from the awareness of self as a member of a group within a defined and ordered sacred space with a well-defined set of social attributes. Impact of the sacred space on one’s sense of self is vividly discussed on the basis of a case of the Ostian association of stuppatores who at some point transformed their courtyard sanctuary into a mithraeum – transformation of the sacred space leads the author to offer interesting speculations on the range of experiences and emotional responses. Attilio Mastrocinque’s contribution (‘Dionysos and Religious Experiences in Bona Dea Rituals’) moves the focus from the sacred architecture to ritual, offers a series of observations on Dionysiac sarcophagi, and reads representations of the reliefs as reflections on contemporary Maenadic rituals of Fauna (daughter or wife of Faunus) / Bona Dea which should secure fertility of brides / brides to be. Rituals represent focal point of Charles Guittard’s concise contribution as well: ‘From the curia on the Palatine to the regia on the forum: the itinerary as of the salii as a war ritual’ sums up the gist well enough – after discussion of the ritual centres of Salii, the author considers religious topography and focuses on the armed procession which was organized twice a year, highlighting the initiatory character of the collegium and initiatory aspect of the ritual which he holds for unique (pp. 182-183). Trade and Commerce At Sepphoris, Israel Sarah VanSickle 1998 Honors Research Dr. Dennis E. Groh, Advisor I Introduction Trade patterns in the Near East are the subject of conflicting interpretations. Researchers debate whether Galilean cities utilized trade routes along the Sea of Galilee and the Mediterranean or were self-sufficient, with little access to trade. An analysis of material culture found at specific sites can most efficiently determine the extent of trade in the region. If commerce is extensive, a significant assemblage of foreign goods will be found; an overwhelming majority of provincial artifacts will suggest minimal trade. -

Bulletin of the Anglo-Israel Archaeological Society 2007 Volume 25 Reassessing the Judean Desert Caves: Libraries, Archives, Genizas and Hiding Places STEPHEN PFANN In December 1952, five years after the discovery of Qumran cave 1, Roland de Vaux connected its manuscript remains to the nearby site of Khirbet Qumran when he found one of the unique cylindrical jars, typical of cave 1Q, embedded in the floor of the site. The power of this suggestion was such that, from that point on, as each successive Judean Desert cave containing first-century scrolls was discovered, they, too, were assumed to have originated from the site of Qumran. Even the scrolls discovered at Masada were thought to have arrived there by the hands of Essene refugees. Other researchers have since proposed that certain teachings within the scrolls of Qumran’s caves provide evidence for a sect that does not match that of the Essenes described by first-century writers such as Josephus, Philo and Pliny. These researchers prefer to call this group ‘the Qumran Community’, ‘the Covenanters’, ‘the Yahad ’ or simply ‘sectarians’. The problem is that no single title sufficiently covers the doctrines presented in the scrolls, primarily since there is a clear diversity in doctrine among these scrolls.1 In this article, I would like to present a challenge to this monolithic approach to the understanding of the caves and their scroll collections. This reassessment will be based on a close examination of the material culture of the caves (including ceramics and fabrics) and the palaeographic dating of the scroll collections in individual caves. -

A new original exhibit at the Jewish Museum of Maryland (JMM) will invite students to think more deeply about the messages (overt and ambiguous) embedded in articles of clothing from the last two centuries in the collection of the JMM, and what they can teach us about our own lives. Before you visit, please: • Read through these materials, • Discuss the key message with your students, • Review the glossary of terms that students may find in the exhibit. Jewish Museum of Maryland Educator’s Guide— Page 1 Key Message Fashion Statement will ask students to consider how a man’s black hat can signal religious expression or a fur coat can communicate a woman’s aspirations. Students will consider everyday clothing from club jackets to political tee shirts, military and civilian uniforms to “must-have” accessories, and explore how those everyday objects amplify (and sometimes disguise) identity and affiliation. Using the disciplines of history and material culture studies, Fashion Statement displays clothing and accessories worn by Jewish Marylanders – women, men, and children – in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. Historic photographs, documents, and maps will provide context, along with interpretive panels telling the stories of each garment and accessory. -

ARAM, 23 (2011) 489-508. doi: 10.2143/ARAM.23.0.2959670 WALLS OF THE DECAPOLIS Dr. ROBERT SMITH (Mid-Atlantic Christian University) Walls were important to the citizens of the Decapolis cities.1 While the world- view of Late Antiquity interpreted the rise and fall of cities as ultimately being the result of divine intervention, the human construction of defensive walls was still a major civic concern. Walls, like temples, honored a city’s patron deities and fostered a sense of local identity and well-being. These structures, long a bulwark of independence and status for cities in the Levant,2 were present in the Hellenizing pre-Decapolis cities, permitted in the Decapolis during the Roman period and were promoted during the subsequent Byzantine period as well. Instead of fostering local rebellion against a distant Rome or later Con- stantinople, the construction of Decapolis city walls, like other components of the imperial architectural palette, was a strategic asset that served to cultur- ally unify the region’s ethnically and linguistically diverse population.3 The “spiritual walls” of cultural solidarity, established in Hellenism and continued by Rome, together with the physical walls of the Decapolis cities helped to preserve their identities for centuries. The Roman and Byzantine empires depended upon strong loyal cities like those of the Decapolis to sustain their rule in the Levant. WALLS OF PRE-DECAPOLIS CITIES IN THE PRE-ROMAN ERA Cities that would be counted as part of the Decapolis in the Roman Era were typically established in the Hellenistic era on the remains of ancient settle- ments.
