  • Introduction to Confess the Gay Away? Media, Religion, and the Political Economy of Ex-Gay Therapy
Introduction to Confess the Gay Away? Media, Religion, and the Political Economy of Ex-gay Therapy by Michael Thorn A PORTION OF THE DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO April 2015 ©Michael Thorn, 2015 1 Introduction: Confess Thy Self? In the media debate surrounding the Christian ex-gay movement, the phrase “pray the gay away” is often used as shorthand to describe the movement’s religiously mediated sexual orientation conversion efforts. However, when one digs deeper, not just into ex-gay practices, but into the debate itself, it becomes clear that ex-gay change—regardless of whether effective or not—is less about prayer than confession and testimony. Consider writer-director Jamie Babbit’s film But I’m a Cheerleader, a campy, comedic tale of a lesbian cheerleader forced into an ex-gay conversion camp (featuring drag queen Ru Paul in a rare not-in-drag performance). The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 1999, is the second fictional pop culture text to depict the movement1 and it is all about confession. It is an iconic depiction, an intervention in the debate that is frequently referenced and imitated. It is mentioned in a 2011 documentary called This is What Love in Action Looks Like about real-life teenager Zach Stark being forced into an ex-gay conversion program; it is imitated in both a 2007 episode of the popular Comedy Central animated satire South Park, in which the character Butters is forced into an ex-gay conversion program, and a 2013 episode of Saturday Night Live featuring Ben Affleck as an ex-gay counsellor.

  • Unearthing African American History & Culture Through Home Movies
Unearthing African American History & Culture Through Home Movies by Jasmyn R. Castro A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Moving Image Archiving and Preservation Program Department of Cinema Studies New York University May 2015 1! Introduction African American home movie collections across the United States can, and should, play a larger role in the depiction of African American history and culture. As a historical resource, home movies provide a direct and personal look into the lives of African Americans. Culturally, these home movies document their way of life through everyday personal experiences and social interactions. Since the introduction of film in the United States, home movie recording was one of the first opportunities for self-documentation. Before the invention of the 8mm film gauge, only an elite few were fortunate enough to find themselves in a position to record their experiences through photography, and an even smaller group (practically non-existent) were able to record on 16mm; the first amateur motion picture film format. A small percentage of African Americans took part in such leisure activities, however, economic and social conditions in the United States played an important role in who and what was documented. During the early 1900s, African Americans found themselves in the midst of a new chapter in their history as a newly formed ethnic group in the United States. Early attempts at capturing the African American experience were, for the majority, conducted as part of government projects such as “Voices from the Days of Slavery”, a collection of audio interviews between former slaves and employees of the Work Progress Administration’s (WPA) Federal Writers’ Project.1 The WPA was an American New Deal agency that employed millions of unemployed Americans to conduct public works assignments like the Federal Writers’ Project “Slave Narratives”, in which twenty-three interviewees, born during the time of slavery in the 1 Kniffel, Leonard.

Likewise, theories of animation often foreground its disruptive potential. Taking an interdisciplinary approach that encompasses girlhood studies, animation studies, and screen studies, this article analyses the representation of the two main girl characters, Tina and Louise Belcher, in the animated sitcom Bob’s Burgers (2011–present). Taking this concept of mutability as its central focus, it argues that animation is an ideal medium for representing girlhood, given its disruptive potential and non-linear capacities, whereby characters are often frozen in time. With no commitment to aging its young female characters, Bob’s Burgers is instead able to construct a landscape of girlhood that allows for endless reversal, contradiction and overlap in the experiences of Tina and Louise, whose existence as animations reveals girlhood as a liminal space in which girls can be one thing and the other – gullible and intelligent, vulnerable and strong, sexual and innocent – without negating their multifarious experiences.

  • PAULA POUNDSTONE Biography
PAULA POUNDSTONE Biography Appearing on stage with a stool, a microphone, and a can of Diet Pepsi, PAULA POUNDSTONE is famous for her razor-sharp wit and spontaneity. The Boston Globe said, “Poundstone improvises with a crowd like a Jazz musician…swinging in unexpected directions without a plan, without a net.” Paula is so quick and unassuming that audience members at her live shows often leave complaining that their cheeks hurt from laughter and debating whether the random people she talked to were “plants”. Paula grew up in Sudbury, Massachusetts and by the time she was nineteen was traveling on a Greyhound bus across the country – stopping in at open mic nights at comedy clubs as she went. She credits her kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Bump, with being the first one to spot her comedic talents. Bump wrote in a letter to Paula’s parents: “I have enjoyed many of Paula’s humorous comments about our activities.” In 1979 Paula began nurturing her standup comedy talent as part of the Boston comedy scene, and then moved to San Francisco where she continued to flourish. By 1990 she’d relocated to Los Angeles and had starred in several comedy specials for HBO, as well as appeared on Saturday Night Live when friend and mentor Robin Williams hosted the show. Paula’s first one- hour HBO special, “Cats, Cops, and Stuff.” made her the first woman to ever receive the Cable ACE for best standup comedy special. She also starred in a self-titled talk show series for HBO (for which she won her second Cable ACE Award for Best Program Interviewer, beating out other, more recognized names in that field.) In 1992, Poundstone forsook what she considered the ‘staid’ 5-minute standup set on late night talk-shows for something she thought would be more real with the audience and filed memorable field commentary of the Presidential Election for the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

  • A Road to Awareness - Saving Home Movies Campaign in Taiwan
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Media Archiving as Critical Pedagogy: A Road to Awareness - Saving Home Movies Campaign in Taiwan A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Education by Yu-En Hsieh 2018 © Copyright by Yu-En Hsieh 2018 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Media Archiving as Critical Pedagogy: A Road to Awareness - Saving Home Movies Campaign in Taiwan By Yu-En Hsieh Doctor of Philosophy in Education University of California, Los Angeles, 2018 Professor Douglas M. Kellner, Chair This study analyzes the idea of ―media archiving as critical pedagogy‖ by using the Saving Home Movies Campaign (hereafter the Campaign) in Taiwan as a case study. Home movies are not only valuable family artifacts but also historical and cultural documents full of signs and symbols and an anthropological record of a transforming society. They reflect the standpoints of the people who produced them, providing messages and information different from official records and mainstream media. This study illustrates how a group of people made it their mission to save, collect, and preserve home movies made and owned by ordinary Taiwanese, and engaged them in home movie preservation practice. The goal of this study is to analyze the Campaign and its use of critical pedagogy, learn the perspective of the ―ordinary people‖ who participated, and interpret what critical pedagogy both the Campaign and the ordinary people bring. This study adopts qualitative approaches to collect data and a combination of textual ii analysis and coding to examine and interpret the data collected. First, I conducted field research in several archival institutions to collect past and current studies related to Taiwanese home movies, as well as the data about the Campaign.
