Mackie ’61, for her exceptional contributions to the field of historic textiles from Islamic lands. Louise Mackie received her bachelor of arts in art history from Wells College and with Carol Gaines Ruckle ’61 after graduation enjoyed visiting her Wells professor, Hannelore Glasser, in Florence, Italy, during two enlightening years of traveling, studying and working in Europe and the Middle East. That led to secretarial work in the Islamic Art Department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York which inspired studying Islamic art history with Professor Richard Ettinghausen for a master of arts at NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts, integrated with stimulating graduate studies at the American University in Cairo, Egypt. She recently retired as curator of textiles and Islamic art at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio. During her impressive curatorial career of 45 years, Mackie held positions at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, The Textile Museum in Washington, D.C., and taught at the University of Toronto. She was a founding director (in 1987) and past president of the Textile Society of America, which is thriving with over 800 WCA AWA R D members; sat on the Advisory Committee of The Textile Museum; and served on the Conseil de Direction of the Centre International d’Etude des Textiles Anciens (CIETA) CEREMONY INVITATION in Lyon, France. -

We’ve long dreamed of seeing such a venue – ingenious theming supported by harmonized cues, memorabilia mixed into a sen- sation-filled set, full of engaging staff performances, and charging admission fees to a number of places within the place. One can’t even call the American Girl Place a retail store, as it is indeed a business stage for experiences. A new version of the game hits stores in 2000. 1 LETTER TO SHAREHOLDERS The bad news for 1999 unfortunately has overshadowed the good news. We are all painfully aware of the negative effect the acquisition of The Learning Company and its subsequent perfor- mance had on our results for 1999. These well-reported difficulties obscured the fundamentally strong performance of Mattel’s core brands and sectors. In the seasonally important fourth quarter, core product sales were up 13 percent in the U.S. – Barbie grew by 11 percent and Fisher-Price by 14 percent. Mattel Entertainment was up 70 percent, Wheels recorded a world- wide sales increase of 6 percent and Pleasant Company achieved a 4 percent growth in sales. These solid performances represent a strong endorsement of Mattel’s strategy, and serve as the underpinning for our optimism for the future. Kevin Barge August 2017 Major Subject: Communication Copyright 2017 Travis Lloyd Cox ABSTRACT Over the last several decades, a neoliberal shift in medical practice from institutional treatment to self-care and prevention has moved many engagements with medical authority figures out of the clinic and into society more broadly. In this context, medical authority has become more complex and difficult to locate as Western medical knowledges and practices have dispersed and intermingled with a range of other health informations and forms of healthcare. As a result, this dissertation uses a constitutive rhetorical approach to locate and examine contemporary forms of medical authority by interrogating the relationship between health subjects and medical authority in neoliberal health discourses. Rather than treat health discourses as fixed asymmetrical texts by which health subjects are either disciplined or empowered, I argue that analyzing these discourses as constitutive relationships by interrogating how health subjects and various forms of medical authority interact with and constitute each other through these texts reveals a more nuanced understanding of how both authority and subjectivity are negotiated and sustained in these contemporary neoliberal sites of engagement. -

PLEASANT COMPANY’S AMERICAN GIRLS COLLECTION: THE CORPORATE CONSTRUCTION OF GIRLHOOD by NANCY DUFFEY STORY (Under the direction of JOEL TAXEL) ABSTRACT This study examines the modes of femininity constructed by the texts of Pleasant Company’s The American Girls Collection in an effort to disclose their discursive power to perpetuate ideological messages about what it means to be a girl in America. A feminist, post structual approach, informed by neo-Marxist insights, is employed to analyze the interplay of gender, class, and race, as well as the complex dynamics of the creation, marketing, publication and distribution of the multiple texts of Pleasant Company, with particular emphasis given to the historical fiction books that accompany the doll-characters. The study finds that the selected texts of the The American Girls Collection position subjects in ways that may serve to reinforce rather than challenge traditional gender behaviors and privilege certain social values and social groups. The complex network of texts positions girls as consumers whose consumption practices may shape identity. The dangerous implications of educational books, written, at least in part, as advertisements for products, is noted along with recommendations that parents and teachers assist girl-readers in engaging in critical inquiry with regard to popular culture texts.
