Did you know… Didcot's synonymous connection with railways was noted in and 's humorous book , published in 1983. The book, a "dictionary of things that there aren't any words for yet", referred to "a Didcot" as "The small, oddly shaped bit of card which a ticket inspector cuts out of a ticket with his clipper for no apparent reason".

An electricity pylon on farmland alongside Abingdon Road (opposite Tamar Way) on the eastern edge of Didcot featured on the cover of US rock band Black Swan Lane's album Under My Fallen Sky, released in November 2017

In the bar Norwich take on QPR in the lunch time game which will be live on the big screens, after our match please join us to watch the FA Cup semi final between Manchester City and Brighton.

On this day in Rovers history… Rovers have won some silverware on this date. Back in 1935, Kempston lifted the North Beds. Charity Cup after beating Langford 3-0 at Fairfield. Rovers first recorded game on this date was in was in 1928, when the team travelled to Arlesey in the Beds. & District League. The game ended with Rovers winning 4-3.

Rovers have two more home games after this fixture before the end of the season. Voting is open for the player of the year nominations, completed slips can be handed in at the bar, to the press desk or to any member of matchday staff around the club.

Didcot arrive in Kempston in the thick of a play off chase. The reverse fixture between the two sides, back in November saw Rovers take a half time lead before being undone by two late goals for the hosts. It was the first league game in charge for Tony Joyce and the last for many of the players who had pledged to stay after the departures of the previous management. The First Team completed the signing of Dean Dummett last week, ahead of the registration deadline. Dean joined from Bedford Town and was in the side that travelled to Welwyn Garden City last weekend. Kempston is no mystery to Dean, having previously played for Rovers youth, reserves and first team up until 2015. He has also ‘guested’ for the Development Team under Stuart Mellon, now first team assistant manager. When Dean has come up against Kempston while wearing the colours of Bedford Town, the Nuts On Tour have jokingly chanted that he is “one of our own”. He certainly is now.

Hillgrounds is involved in hosting some of the County Cup finals this season, but Kempston Rovers have two teams to cheer on in the other finals. Sunday 28th April at 2pm, the U16 Colts Tigers travel to Barton Rovers to face Stotfold for their cup, while the U16 Girls have a trip to Leighton Town to play Watling – the date for this is published as TBA, but has a kick off time of 7:30pm.

On Tuesday 9th April, at Luton Town’s Kenilworth Road ground, Bedfordshire FA are hosting a very special game to mark their 125th Anniversary. A Bedfordshire FA Representative XI will play the England C team. Tickets for the game are on sale, priced at £5 for adults and just £1 for concessions. Kempston Rovers 135 years of Football History

Kempston Rovers were formed in 1884 and entered the Bedford & District League. Rover’s first league championship was won in 1908 and twelve months later Rover’s retained the title while also carrying off the Bedfordshire Senior Cup and North Beds Charity Cup. The Walnut Boys, the club’s official nickname, comes from the large walnut orchard in Kempston around the time of foundation. This identity is carried forward by one of the main supporters’ groups at the club, “The Nuts on Tour”. 1973 saw the start of a new era as Kempston relocated to a new ground further down Hillgrounds Road. A magnificent season saw the Walnut Boys storm to the Premier title losing only once in 32 games. A golden period in the club's history saw League Cup successes in 1975 and 1977; the Beds Senior Cup was again captured in 1977 while the Walnut Boys reached the last 16 of the FA Vase in 1975. In 1986, the club moved again, this time to the current ground, their third in the same road. Kempston last won the county’s highest honour, the Beds. Senior Cup, in 1992, the fourth time the trophy has come to Hillgrounds. In 2002 Kempston Rovers and Kempston Colts began an alliance to pool resources/personnel under the name AFC Kempston. The youth teams at Rovers still go by the name “Colts”, keeping the history of youth football in the town alive. The beginning of 2005 saw the start of major re-developments at Hillgrounds Road with the building of new changing facilities and the building of an artificial training pitch, which is available to book all year round for training sessions, small sided games or just a kick around with friends. The new ground facilities were completed in 2006 and along with a new stand; on-going ground improvements and the existing clubhouse refurbished and ready to hire for functions and events, Kempston now have some of the best facilities in the area for non-league football. Midway through the 2013-14 season James Stoyles and Gary Flinn took over the 1st Team managerial duties before, in 2015-16, Rovers won the United Counties Football League Premier Division, with a thrilling final win on the last day of the season, a campaign in which they only lost one league game. This resulted in promotion and saw us move into the Southern League Division One which represents the highest level we have attained within the FA pyramid system so far. Since promotion, the club has twice narrowly missed out on a place in the end of season promotion play offs. On both occasions, finishing above some of the more established sides in the division. The club currently operates one of the largest youth systems in the county, with over thirty sides at various age groups and a senior development side. There is a supporters’ club that holds various functions throughout the season to support the first team.

Didcot Town FC were founded in 1907 and prior to becoming founder members of the Hellenic League in 1953 the Club had competed in the North Berks, the Reading & District, the Oxfordshire Senior and also the Metropolitan Leagues, albeit with mixed fortune. Didcot adapted well to the new Hellenic League format and, under the captaincy of Ray Warr (who remains one of the club’s most dedicated supporters), became the inaugural League Champions. After four seasons in the Hellenic League, Didcot joined the Metropolitan League and reached the League Cup Final in 1961/62. Then in 1963 Didcot returned to the Hellenic League where it has remained involved to this day.

Didcot waited until the 1965/66 season to taste success again when they won the Premier Division Challenge Cup (Witney Town were defeated 3-2 in the final). The following season the cup was successfully defended but the Club had to wait ten long years for further honours. Indeed, the intervening years had seen Didcot demoted to Division One, but season 1976/77 not only saw a return to the Premier League as Division One Champions (from Flackwell Heath) but also success in the Challenge Cup. A decade later, in 1987, Didcot again returned to the Premier Division after finishing in third place behind champions Bishops Cleeve and runners-up Cheltenham Town Reserves. The Club benefited from Hellenic League rules which prevented Cheltenham Reserves from participating in the Premier Division and Didcot took the second and last promotion spot. The season was rounded off with success in the Division One Challenge Cup, where Cheltenham Town Reserves, again the victims, were defeated 2-0 in the final.

The Club remained in the Premier Division for the next six campaigns, and managed a notable honour in 1992 when they lifted the Premier Division Cup (Banbury United defeated 3-0 in the final). Despite this success the following season resulted in disappointment with relegation to Division One. Within three years the Club was reinstated to the Premier League and while the League Cup was won in 1997, the Club had to wait until they moved to the impressive new Loop Meadow Stadium (in 1999) before a turnaround of fortunes was truly achieved. In fact, the Club established itself as one of the most consistent performers in the Premier Division over the next 7 years, never finishing outside the top 7. ] DIDCOT TOWN FC History 2

And along the way silverware has been lifted in the form of the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy (2001 and 2003), the League’s Supplementary Cup (2003) and the Challenge Cup (2004).

Season 2004-2005 ended up as arguably the most successful in the club’s history so far following a memorable 3-2 win in the final of the FA Vase at White Hart Lane against pre-tournament favourites AFC Sudbury. This came on the back of the Club retaining the League Challenge Cup with a 5-1 win against Carterton. Didcot came agonizingly close to claiming the treble but failed to win the League by a point despite amassing 97 points and winning 31 of their 42 matches. The Club also ended with their best ever defensive record, just 21 League goals conceded including a remarkable 19 clean sheets at the Loop Meadow. After a wait of 53 years, the team finally brought the Hellenic League trophy back to Didcot in 2006 and with it the Club ensured a move up into the Southern League for the first time. The Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy and the Hellenic League Challenge Cup were also claimed, the latter to make Didcot the first Club to win the competition three times in a row. The League triumph broke all records with Didcot Town becoming the first Club to reach more than 100 points in a season in the Hellenic League and the average points per game (2.63) gave Didcot the best record of any club at level 5 or above in British football that year.

Moving closer to present day, Didcot Town have enjoyed spells in the South & West Premier Division, following play off success against AFC Totton in 2009. Didcot Town stayed in that league for 2 seasons before being relegated courtesy of Windsor being removed from the league following financial difficulties. Ironically, Didcot Town were one of the few Club’s to take points off Windsor that season, so it was a bitter pill for DTFC to swallow.

Fallow seasons followed with sporadic FA Cup and FA Trophy success. However, things started to improve in 2014, when new management duo of Ian Concannon and Jamie Heapy (both DTFC legends) were appointed as Joint Managers following a period of uncertainty and destabilising management changes.

DIDCOT TOWN FC History 3

DTFC fought through numerous qualifying rounds of the FA Trophy to be eventually awarded a prime fixture versus Forest Green away. DTFC managed to draw that match (to the euphoria of the strong travelling contingent) and were narrowly beaten when Forest Green returned to the Loop Meadow Stadium a week later. Didcot Town’s biggest moment came in the FA Cup in 2015. DTFC managed to qualify for the 1st Round of the FA Cup with a home tie against Exeter City. Being the underdog, Didcot Town were even awarded a live televised tie on BT Sport, which didn’t deter a record crowd of 2,707 to the Draycott Engineering Loop Meadow Stadium.

DTFC employed current manager Andy Ballard in December 2018 following the sudden departure of Heapy and Concannon. Ballard stepped up into the role as caretaker manager whilst still being a key player in the side and after a mixed start, Didcot finished the 15-16 Season strongly to finish 10th. Ballard’s first full season in charge was full of many highs and lows as a number of key player departures drew mixed results but the 17-18 season saw Didcot exceed all expectations as they finished in 6th place to secure a place in the Play offs. A 2-0 defeat in the semi finals to Wimborne Town couldn’t deny a brilliant season for The Railwaymen which included a Final appearance in The bigfreebet.com Challenge Cup.

Didcot now enter a new chapter as they make the move into Division 1 Central Division, a first transfer at this level for the club that has spent its all its years at Step 4 South West based. DIDCOT TOWN FC Player Profiles 1

Match Report Three in a row By Matthew Wilmot Welwyn Garden City 1 - 2 Kempston Rovers Rovers produced a determined and gritty performance to come from behind against stubborn hosts at Hearns Way on a gloriously sunny spring afternoon. Kempston began the brighter of the two sides and should’ve taken the lead after two minutes when Shane Bush squared to Josh Crawley in the area, but the ball took a few bobbles on the very tricky surface and Crawley’s shot failed to really test Rabstein in the City goal. Moments later, Ben Shepherd was the supply line for Scott Joseph, who fired narrowly wide of the mark. In the twelfth minute, Kempston were caught with a sucker punch, a dangerous attack down the right hand side was squared across to the waiting Elliot Bailey, who gleefully tapped home off the post to open the scoring for the hosts against the run of play. Less than a minute later, the lead should’ve been doubled, an effort had to be cleared off the goal line after Carl Knox had made an initial save. Welwyn had a free header from a corner sail over the bar just after twenty minutes, as Kempston struggled to cope with their direct, competitive style. When Rovers eventually regained a foothold in the game, Shane Bush saw a very optimistic long range lobbed volley saved by Rabstein after some midfield pinball. On the half hour mark, Rovers did draw level. Cameron Hyde worked some space to whip a left wing cross into the area, causing chaos for Welwyn. Rabstein missed the catch, both Scott Joseph and Josh Crawley were following in behind the keeper, but the final touch into the net came off the unfortunate Jon Sexton at the back post. In the dying moments of the first half, Kempston took the lead. Some exchanges of possession in midfield led to George Boland coming forward with the ball, about twenty five yards from goal he sized up the shot. The effort was scuffed slightly and fizzed across the treacherous surface. Rabstein, obviously content that the ball was going wide, seemed to leave the ball – only to see it creep inside his far post, allowing Rovers to leave the field at the break with a deserved lead. The second half began at as high a tempo as the first, Carl Knox needing to be alert at his near post to punch away a second minute free kick. With the high pace and uneven surface, total football was not going to be on the cards in the second period and it wasn’t until the midway point of the half that the first real chance was made. Welwyn sub Eusebio Da Silva, trying to live up to the name, bustled his way through a couple of challenges but couldn’t find the necessary finish to beat Knox. With fifteen minutes to play, Rovers thought they may have scored again. Ben Shepherd played a deep free kick right to the back post, Rabstein missed the catch and a crowd of players converged on the far post area. Hands and voices went up to claim that the ball had gone over the line, but neither referee or assistant were convinced, and Welwyn cleared any follow up danger. Welwyn searched desperately for an equaliser and in the last ten minutes, Da Silva was denied by Knox after a mis-hit shot, Alfie Powell threw his body manfully on the line to block a shot from Brendan Ocran and then in stoppage time, Eion McKeown attempted to beat Knox with a shot on the run but the forward couldn’t generate the power needed from his left boot. The result lifts Kempston up a place in the table to thirteenth. The highest the club has been since November and the first time the club has registered three straight league wins all season. Match Report Back to back wins for Kempston

By Matthew Wilmot Kempston Rovers 3 – 0 Aylesbury FC Kempston Rovers recorded back to back league wins and clean sheets in the sunshine at Hillgrounds, with captain Shane Bush staking a huge claim for the player of the season award. Rovers came into this game looking to build on last weekend’s unlikely success against Bedford Town and were looking the more likely in front of goal, in spite of the visitors’ neat play in the middle of the park. The first chance came after the quarter hour mark, when Daniel Akubuine clipped a cross to the back post which was met by Izale McLeod, but he couldn’t generate enough power to trouble Binnion. Less than five minutes later, the deadlock was broken. Shane Bush won the ball back deep in his own half and launched a hopeful ball forward to clear his lines. It turned into the perfect pass for McLeod who nipped in ahead of Craig Carby to lift the ball deftly over the advancing Binnion and into the empty net beyond, his fifth goal in Rovers colours. The remainder of the half was played at a seemingly pedestrian pace, only Akubuine with a stoppage time bustle into the box which saw him clip the outside of the post troubled either goal. Three minutes after the break, Rovers were able to double their advantage. Ben Shepherd played a free kick from wide on the right into the box which was only half cleared by the Aylesbury defence. Jordan Wright acrobatically turned the ball back toward goal with an overhead scissor kick that was glanced home by Shane Bush from the six yard line. With the scent of goals in his nostrils, Scott Joseph attempted to add himself to the score sheet, but couldn’t find the target with two efforts in swift succession, first firing over after a neat pull back by Akubuine, before firing wildly wide when put through in the channel. Midway through the half, Kempston made the game safe. A long bouncing ball saw Bush competing with Odusoga as the pair ran to the edge of the Aylesbury box. The Rovers man winning the dual and getting enough of a toe to the ball to steer it goalward. Binnion, advancing from his line got a hand to it, enough to slow the ball down but as he scrambled back to his line, he couldn’t reach the ball before it trickled over the line. The anguish on his, and his team-mates’, faces was clear to see as The Moles appeared a beaten side. With ten minutes to go, Bush was denied a hat- trick by a flying Binnion save, having been set up by sub Josh Crawley. Deep into stoppage time, Aylesbury had three chances in rapid succession but Deacon, Brito and Feyi were all denied by manful blocks as Rovers defenders threw themselves on the line. Josh Crawley had one final chance for Kempston, but his lobbed effort drifted wide after he had won the tussle with Gilbert.
