Civic Service Goal 1

Create an awe-inspiring, architecturally significant, global destination in the Badlands – the fulcrum of the hero’s journey in Roosevelt’s incredible life story. Goal 2 Make Theodore Roosevelt National Park a preeminent model of a public-private partnership, and a “bucket list” park for the next century. Goal 3 Foster a convening space for civic dialogue, thoughtful debate, and inspiration – think JFK Library meets the Aspen Institute with a dash of Sunnylands. Goal 4 Embrace nature as the “fourth wall” so that guests can, like Roosevelt once did, find themselves nowhere in a space of resilience, self-discovery, and reflection. Goal 5 Serve as a platform, reaching out beyond the Badlands to engage students, voices of conservation, and the next generation of global servant leaders. Timeline Natural Partners WHY NORTH DAKOTA? Roosevelt was a New Yorker by chance, and a Dakotan by choice.

Dakota is the fulcrum of the hero’s journey WHY NORTH DAKOTA?

• Elkhorn Ranch: “Cradle of Conservation” – Douglas Brinkley • Theodore Roosevelt National Park: The only National Park named for a person, let alone a President • Medora: The original town, an established tourist attraction, and gateway to the West “I have always said I would not have been President had it not been for my experience in North Dakota.”

- Theodore Roosevelt “Do you know what chapter or experience in all my life I would choose to remember, were the alternative forced upon me to recall one portion of it, and to have erased from my memory all the other experiences? I would take the memory of my life on the ranch with its experiences close to Nature and among the men who lived nearest her.”
