Saratoga Hip 225 – ROCK HARD TEN colt Owned by a partnership led by IEAH Stable, Benny The Bull has run out of a SPR by SEATTLE SLEW second in both 2009 starts – the True North and Grade II Smile Handicap at Calder behind Sunday rival Eaton’s Gift. Though he may not be the horse he was last summer, the 6-year-old sports an 8-for-13 record at 6 furlongs and has a devastating late kick that could be flattered by the Vanderbilt’s early pace. Eaton’s Gift enters off the best performance of his 12-race career, a 1 1/2-length win in the Smile when trained by Dale Romans. Ahmed Zayat switched the 4-year-old son of Johan- nesburg to Chad Brown’s barn shortly after the Smile and Eaton’s Gift looks to build on his perfect 3-for-3 record at 6 furlongs. Jose Lezcano, aboard for the Smile score, will attempt to harness Eaton’s Gift’s early speed while saving some run for the stretch. Go Go Shoot (John Velazquez, 115), who enters on the heels of two straight 6-furlong stakes wins at Mon- mouth Park for Bruce Levine and Re- pole Stable, looks for his first graded stakes win. The 4-year-old son of Son- gandaprayer brings some serious speed and should be on the pace from his rail draw. Go Go Shoot wired the Longfel- low June 6, running the first half-mile in 43 3/5 seconds and drawing off to a 9 1/2-length win. Sunday, August 9, 2009 19 Keep The Peace gets Game is afoot rematch with Pletcher filly by Karen M. Johnson A tough trip and a very tough rival in Game Face resulted in Keep The Peace finishing second in the Grade I Princess Rooney Handicap at Calder last month. Game Face is again the horse to beat in today’s Honorable $150,000 Honor- able Miss Handi- Miss cap. Keep The Peace will take stakes another run at preview Game Face in the 6-furlong Grade II, which drew a six-horse field of fillies and mares. Eddie Kenneally, Keep The Peace’s trainer, acknowledges that Game Face was the best horse the day she rambled to an easy victory in the 6-furlong Prin- cess Rooney. Gary and Mary West’s Keep The Peace finished second, but perhaps a smoother trip would have resulted in a closer finish. “Our filly didn’t have the best trip at Calder,” Kenneally said. “A horse ran up on her heels and caught her hind ankle. We lost some momentum going into the turn because of that. She lost her stride and her momentum more than anything. With an ideal trip, she probably could have run better at Calder. Game Face was still the best horse in the race.” See Honorable Miss page 21 Tod Marks Porte Bonheur, who won the Victory Ride last season, returns to action today.

Sunday, August 9, 2009 33 Calm after the storm Seven Storm Cats grace Spa as part of stallion’s finale by Michele MacDonald It’s not often that life allows the luxu- ry of observing the passage of a remark- able era. Epochs usually just fade away, their meaning and value not recognized until long after they are gone. But this year’s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale will serve as the begin- ning of a poignant public farewell to the mightiest stallion ever known to the Thor- oughbred commercial marketplace when seven members of the last sizable crop by Storm Cat are set to file through the Hum- phrey S. Finney Sale Pavilion ring. Even though the global economic gloom is so pervasive that it has over- shadowed this moment, the reign of Storm Cat as the sire of more seven-fig- ure yearlings than any other stallion in history could be extended even further. With Storm Cat, anything has been pos- sible when it comes to yearling sales. At the time the now 26-year-old son of Storm Bird was pensioned last May due to declining fertility, it was reported Tod Marks See Storm Cat page 35 Hip16 is part of the final significant crop from Storm Cat.
